Finishing a bite of her spicy penne, Vora considered those options for a moment. “Well, I suppose I’m curious if there are any family traditions you have, perhaps things that are passed down in generations, or other things like this festival that are important to all of you as a family?”

Avik took a sip of her drink and let a small stretch of time pass.

“Having a multicultural family can create issues in developing traditions. Scheduling is also a factor because at least two of us work in Starfleet. I know you have experienced how unpredictable space exploration is and how quickly it can take up your time. This festival is the only tradition we make time for and that happens every year.”

She wetted down her tongue while she formatted the next statement.

“I think routines are more likely passed down in our generations than traditions. They are also more flexible.” Her eyes looked to Jasper as she then asked a question.
“Jasper, what is our routine when I am in charge?”

Jasper looked up from his math puzzle, his food already gone. He took a solid moment to consider it and finally answered.

“In the morning, you make breakfast. I get asked about the food and why I think you chose it. We clean up and I go play. We eat lunch and do math puzzles and other stuff. At night, you read me a book and I go to sleep.”

Avik hoped that helped to answer some of Vora’s curiosity.

“I see,” Vora said with a nod. Was she disappointed that there wasn’t something more? Perhaps just a little. She had little personal experience with the concept of family and so she was trying to gauge how this one worked. Of course every family was difference and there were nuances to this all over the place, but she supposed she had hoped for something more tangible she could grasp. But as Avik had said, different things could be passed down, though maybe it was a cultural difference, but she wasn’t entirely sure how a routine held significance. “And the routine itself has importance?” she said, hoping they could bridge this informational gap.

“I see some confusion.” Avik noted then exhaled, softly.

“When you look at it objectively, the day shares similarities with the surrounding ones. From start to finish, the length is the same. There’s no drastic change in the world when a holiday happens nor are any certains ones universal to all races. Taking that knowledge, what makes the holidays important to you compared to other days? Why do they stand out?”

The woman paused long enough to let Vora answer her questions. She made sure her tone held no accusations or judgment, but the usual blandness and indifference didn’t help her success very much. In this situation, she had to give Vora the benefit that the woman would not assume things.

Vora considered this but it actually suddenly became more complicated. “I don’t know, not from my own personal experience. To be honest, while I know some regions on Tenra have celebrations I personally did not grow up with any. I’ve never celebrated a holiday, due to the circumstances within which I grew up,” she said with a slight shrug. “But if I were to hazard a hypothesis, holidays are important to people because of the… rituals,” she said with a smile, beginning t nod. “I think I understand. Daily routines are rituals to you that have more significance on your life.”
