Vora grinned. “Sounds like an excellent test of skills that could be quite interesting,” she said. “I was a lot older before I started really doing heavy mathematics, but when I was a kid no matter what else was happening in my life I couldn’t get enough of learning. If there was a book to read, I’d manage a way to read it. But then again it helps that I have an eidetic memory. It’s the only way I managed to get into Starfleet Academy. I could catch up to my peers in very little time.”

“Jasper is fascinated with them. I even caught him trying to develop his own using numbers turned into images.” Avik’s voice held a hint of pride in her nephew’s interests.
“I want to be an officer like mom.” Jasper blurted out, eagerly diving into the mathematical problem.Already he had determined the vowels within the words by picking out the recurring numbers. These were set to the side and lined up with the possibilities before he reinserted them for testing. It was obvious it wasn’t his first puzzle from his Aunt as he worked out a proper method to solve it.
“Make sure you fully explore your options, Jasper. You might end up finding something at the Vulcan Science Academy or even in other areas. Fixating on one parth isn’t optimal.”
Jasper shrugged off her wise advice, his attention still on the puzzle. His mother just shook her head.
“You say that all the time, but he never listens.” Cassandra was obviously amused by the fact.
“He is still young and idealistic. I want him to be confident with what he wants and carve his own path rather than follow ours.” Avik admitted, her attention briefly looked toward the direction the waitress had vanished in.

Vora watched with quiet interest at the interactions, musing about her own reasons for joining. “He can always change his mind,” she said quietly. “And maybe the reasons for doing something changes but the path is still the right one.” She shrugged. “Life can hold a lot of surprises.”

“Possible, but change can also bring less positive experiences.” Avik pointed out as the subject began to trail into uncomfortable territory.
Vora was too good at reading people not to notice the subtle shift that made her less likely to continue that little detail out too far.
Before the conversation could continue, a soft thump came from the kitchens. A woman followed by another man began to trail out with their orders. She gave a bright smile as she checked her list, trying to determine who had ordered what. It didn’t take long until everyone had their main course set out in front of them.
Jasper and Avik pulled a pair of sleek eatery gloves from their pockets before eating.Cassandra shook her head. “I still don’t understand why you wear gloves to eat. It’s just bread sticks.”

“Is it a sanitary thing?” Vora asked. She could understand it, if so, but for her at this point in her life, she was rather far from being a germaphobe. Picking up her fork, she pierced one of the penne that was coated in the rather spicy tomato sauce. It made her think of Carlo. She missed him and his gregarious laugh sometimes.

“Yes,” Avik answered.
She was careful not to sound reprimanding over the lack of knowledge. During her time on Starfleet, she had a few encounters with races ignorant of her cultural values and Nox even pointed out during their appointment. Ignorance wasn’t a flaw, it was a problem solved with knowledge. It was something Avik had to remind herself of on occasion.
“It is also helpful to be able to take off the gloves to touch a datapad screen without smearing it with sauce or crumbs.” She added, trying to come off as amusing.
“I guess that makes sense.” Cassandra retracted from additional questioning as she tended to Jasper.
In the background, Avik’s brother, father, and niece were locked in conversation. Mainly exchanging theories over Kekec’s latest project as it melded into the scenery.
“Vora, I noticed you were very good with Jasper. I hope this doesn’t sound rude, but do you have any experience with children?”
-Avik, XO
Vora smiled softly. “I have a son myself, though he’s just grown now. We spent most of our lives apart but we were reunited a few years ago. And I guess though I never raised a small child myself I’ve always enjoyed children.”

“I can empathize with the struggle. Kivl is from Kekec’s daughter from an arranged marriage,” Cassandra’s eyes wandered over to Kivl.
By this time, the young teenager was enjoying her meal. The woman let a moment of silence pass before she jumped back to the earlier topic. “There are times we conflict, but we’ve managed to find a respect for each other. At least, I hope so. I wonder some times.”
“Cassandra.” Avik’s words interrupted the woman’s thoughts.
“Kivl wouldn’t hesitate to protest her disapproval of you as her father’s mate. Especially if she felt the match was harmful.”
“I suppose you’re right. I’ve never gotten use to that.” She turned back to Vora, the warmth in her expression replaced the worry.
“It’s not easy to be a parent for a child, but something tells me that you would be a natural. I do hope you eventually get that opportunity one day.”
