IC:

The Captain pressed a button on his armrest. =/\= Starbase 51, this is USS Europa. We read you. =/\= It was a bit surprising for the starbase to hail the ship first. Johann idly wondered if there was something important for them to say.

– Johann Dvorak, CO

=^=Welcome to the Wild West Europa.=^= A women’s voice replied excitedly, sounding like she may have been bored prior to their arrival. =^= Commondore, I mean Admiral McGinnis is looking forward to meeting your Captain and First Officer. Let’s see, Oh nice, you are a Discovery-Class. I always wanted to serve on one. But they assigned me to this outpost, I mean starbase, I mean…Maybe once you are done with your deep space assignment I can transfer to your ship. I wish I could go with you.”

The Captain raised both his eyebrows at the really unusual outpouring of emotion.

She continued on....
“Deep space is what I signed up for, but they sent me to this wild west starbase, where the most exciting I’ve seen is a spider in blue jeans, but even that wore off after a while. Anyway, we have you assigned to internal dock 34, Starbase Maintenance division wants to know if you will be switching out your mission modules before you depart? Oh, I forgot, silly me, you crew is free to use all the amenities for your shore leave, I suggest that they visit the 51st Street Bar and Grill, best food in Starfleet I promise with a wine selection to please any pallet.=^=

Johann simply let out a sigh, which was unlikely to have been picked up by the recording devices over the comms channel.

Avik’s head tilted to the side. The woman’s tone wandered far from the customary prime, orderly fashion of most officers the Vulcan was used to. She found it intriguing and strange at the same time. During her time on the last ship she served on, she had rarely exposed to these outpost settings. It would be an educational experience at least.

Slightly worried that the CO might find the woman’s behavior an unpleasant reminder of the last JO batch, she stepped forward to take charge for his benefit.

“Captain, allow me to answer that,” she said respectfully then turned to the woman on the intercom, “From our last CE’s notes, I believe they do need to be switched out according to the maintenance schedule left behind.”

–XO, Avik, Lt. Cmdr

“Very good,” Came the chipper reply. “I’ll inform Commander Locke, he is our chief maintenance officer, to meet with your chief engineer and science officer. Admiral Mcginnis wants to see your XO and CO as soon as you have docked.” There was a pause. ” I’ve got you lined up for docking procedures, frequency 121.85.” She said

=/\= Great, thanks. We’ll begin docking manuevers. Europa out. =/\= He had no real desire to keep talking to such a… chipper… personality. Though with the Europa docking that gave him another chance to evaluate his executive officer.

“You’ve piloted a starship into dock before, right Commander?” he asked Avik.

– Johann Dvorak, CO

Avik was relieved she hadn’t overstepped her role’s boundary. She took a calculated chance to step in, judging the CO’s mood and experience to prevent a recurrence. Her head turned toward the CO when he asked if she had ever docked a starship.

“Yes, when the USS Janus’ Captain had prior engagements. My experience isn’t fully what it should be, but I can manage if necessary,” Avik truthfully admitted.

–XO, Avik, Lt. Cmdr

OOC: I don’t know what the plan is here so I don’t know that we actually need to play this out, if we’re just meeting some Admiral in a bit, but it’s something to do if we want.

OCC: I apologize if things seem slow, I am attempting to get some characters established, this flight controller being one. However, I shall endeavor to speed things up.

IC: Dvorak seemed to look Avik over and assess her words carefully. It seemed as if it was the first admission she ever made that she might not be fully ready to do anything, that there would be any relative weakness. I wonder why… he thought. Maybe I should read that file again…

“Practice makes perfect,” he said, getting up from the Command chair. “Why don’t you take us in?”

– Johann Dvorak, CO

IC: As the the ship prepared to dock, a light started to blink at the security station, indicating a possible security breach in the computer system.
