IC: Within Holodeck one, a zero-gravity rock climbing set up had been created.

It was nothing fancy. Just a city block wide rock tunnel for scaling, the top an opening reaching into the dark and starry skies above. The walls had a dozen odd formations for gripping, anchoring and pushing off toward the other side. It seemed far too long for one individual to scale alone. At bottom, two individuals were checking gear, putting on powder and preparing for the climb upward.

The best-known officer was Avik, a Vulcan female and the XO of the Europa. As she secured the ground anchor with a sharp tug, she turned to her partner in the exercise: U.S.S Janus’ counselor, Lucius Barrick. Barrick had decided to literally take his first leave of absence in months to visit her. The request didn’t strike the Vulcan as odd. Barrick no longer had any family connections since his last remaining relative died three years ago. So his patients, both previous and current, become a healthy substitution. He was here more as a friend than her counselor.

Feeling Avik observing him, Lucius shook his head. He gradually pulled upright then turned his attention on her. His bright blue eyes twinkled in amusement at seeing the familiar observing Vulcan before him. To ease the pressure to say something, his fingers reached up to brush his bangs aside. There were thin grey strands peppered in between. Secretly he hated the fact some races could live beyond hundreds of years and only show a quarter of it in their aging process. It was bad enough his own hair had started to show its age before he was ready for the upcoming forties.

Exhaling, he began to break the building silence, “All right!”

“ I have three exercises pre-planned for us today,” His hand tugged at the rope’s anchor, indicating the first one.

“The first one is a simple, relaxing climb. No time limit. When we reach a set altitude, the holodeck will let us know and that ends the first session. It’s merely a warm-up for the other two.”

Lucius casually moved toward the rest of the gear magnetized to the floor. It prevented them from floating about in space as he singled out a bright yellow flag and pulled it free. Ensuring she could see it, Lucius continued to explain.

“Exercise number two is something I loved as a child. The holodeck will randomly hide the flag somewhere in the space. We’ll be competing to see who finds and gets it first,” He replaced the flag to explain the last exercise.

“These,” He hoisted up two large poles with foam ends.

They were archaic in nature and used to literally beat the stuffing out of each other in a match of strength, dexterity, and speed.

“Are for sparring with each other on a set of floating rock and seeing who knocks the other one off first, simple right?” He asked.
