OOC: So while this is for the security department, they are in the lounge, in a public space, and I expect that others could come and go from the thread if they wanted to interact at all. If you want to, please feel free!
IC:
Cass had sent the memo around to the department for their monthly get together. They did various things-sometimes it leaned towards a team building or training exercise, some times it was purely social. But it was always low-key and fun. Tonight she had considered altering her original plan in light of some of the recent awkwardness, but she knew some of the team were looking forward to it, so for better or worse a Lounge Social it was. So the memo had gone out suggesting people show up at 2000 hours as they felt like it.

No uniforms, of course. That was always the rule.

This was not a nightclub affair and it was most definitely casual, but Cass stood in her quarters debating what to wear far more than she should. Steven of course knew this evening was happening so there was every possibility he’d drop by. She liked dressing up for him. That was a game some days. Schrödinger’s lingerie, after all, was always a favourite. But she was also wanting to be careful not to be overly provocative, in case… she stopped pacing. Oh my God why is this so hard?

Sighing in frustration, she mentally told herself to get a grip and just pick something and not worry about what her appearance may or may not say. Screw it, it was ridiculous anyway she decided as she brushed out her long blond hair, letting it cascade in waves over her shoulders. Fifteen minutes later, Cass left her quarters in a simple black off-the-shoulder, a stretchy teal pencil skirt that hit past the knee and knee high black boots with a low block heel. Minimal makeup- just mascara and a light pink lipgloss.

Arriving a few minutes early, she spied Harriet Betts and Nick Garret a group of tables, who was just being joined by T’Sar. She grinned as she approached. “So, what are we drinking tonight?”

“We were debating the merits of tequila and beer. Or maybe both,” Garret said with a grin.

Abrams feigned a grimace. “Ewwww. Good thing it’s synth or we’d all be in trouble tomorrow. Mixing is a terrible idea. Then again, some terrible ideas are worth trying at least once.”

“Ha! Spoken like a true adrenaline junkie!” Harriet teased.

Cassidy laughed. “I am not an adrenaline junkie. I just am not afraid of high action activities with a measure of risk attached.” Betts and Garret exchanged a look. They definitely weren’t believing it.

Abrams, COS and Security team

Ashlyn was a mess, to put it mildly, she desperately missed her friend and the idea of ‘being social’ was an afterthought so distant that she almost considered not going at all. Then of course was the resounding chorus of Counselors and their preprogrammed phrase, “be more social”, echoing with the Conference. This annoyed her, not because they were right, but because she was already working on a project to keep her mind off of how much she missed Sharah and how much she loathed the new roommate. As soon as she walked in, Ashlyn decided it was time to leave, and with nowhere better to go she may as well go to the Security social.

She walked into the lounge wearing loose cargo pants tucked into a pair of her modified running shoes to look more like toed boots. Her turtle neck shirt also extended to cover her hands in a sort of fingerless glove and a harness with a pack attached to her back. The color of the day seemed to be an ashen gray and lacked the vibrancy of the EL tape that was familiar on all her off duty clothing. In her left pocket were four tightly packed in bottles of water, her right had a collection of stuff, but what it was wasn’t clear. On the harness was a tricorder on her right hip, and three more bottles of water on her left hip. In her hand s were at least two or three PaDDs that she quickly changed out with more PaDDs from within the pack’s side opening.

Ashlyn stopped looking at her PaDD long enough to scan the lounge carefully, identifying each crew member that was present in the room, what table they were seated at, what they were eating or drinking, the level of attention they were paying to the people they were sitting with, and finally which table held the security members. She seemed to linger on the Lieutenant for a moment with a raised eyebrow, then shrugged to dismiss a stray thought before making a hard turn toward the replicator. She pulled a small flat metal disk from her right pocket and with quick hands placed it into the inside top of the replicator where it would be out of view. Ashlyn used the tricorder to ensure activation and connection with the small device and with a satisfied nod, put the tricorder away and joined the rest at the table with the Security team.

Ashlyn greeted everyone with a polite smile and a good afternoon before taking a seat and staring into another PaDD.

It wasn’t that Cassidy hadn’t noticed the shift in her junior officer, but it definitely seemed more pronounced tonight. Feeling a bit like she was hovering over the tables, but still going to grab things for everyone, Cass watched Trenton for a moment. “Hey Trenton, everyone’s just giving me their order. Can I grab you anything?”

Abrams, COS

Ashlyn barely looked up from her collection of PaDDs on the table that she was jumping between like she was playing the strange synthwave music she listens to while running her parkour programs. “I need a .75 watt diode and three meters of-” She pauses mid-thought and looks around the table again before pulling up a water bottle from her pocket, using a single hand to pop the top off of it and taking a quick pull from it. “I’m covered.” Just as quickly, she was lost back in her work on whatever she was doing on the PaDD. It became evident that she was still aware of the table when the NEnsign sitting next to her started to reach for one of the PaDDs and Ashlyn moved the water bottle directly into the path of their hand. With a smirk, she looked at them, “En Guard.” then went back to her PaDD. Every time someone reached out for a PaDD, she would pick it up or place a water bottle in the way to block their attempt to be subtle.

Approaching the table, Cass gave those bothering Trenton a glare and they sheepishly retreated as the COS set down the pitcher and tray of glasses on the large table most people were gathered around. “Alright, help yourselves” she declared as she poured herself a syntheholic beer and took a seat. She didn’t believe in forced socialization but she was also keeping an eye on the overall mood of her team and any individual issues she might see.

Lieutenant Betts grinned in Abrams’ direction. “So… what’s this we hear about a challenge from the USS Return? Something about their chief throwing down the gauntlet and something about calling our team a disheveled mess?” she said with a grin.

Cassidy just laughed. “Oh please, they can say whatever they like, but Lieutenant Jamieson and I go way back to the Academy and he’s just playing.” She took a sip of her beer and leaned in. “Though, if you want to take up said challenge, there is a possibility that something could be arranged. After all, can’t let the Europa’s honor be sullied or anything.”

Abrams, COS

Trenton barely looked up from her PaDDs during the conversation then decided to pull several to bring up information on the USS Return, their CoS and his staff. “What are the terms of this challenge? When will it take place? What is expected? How much time will we have to train for it to ensure our ‘disheveled mess’ is a coordinated ball of chaos that they simply cannot fathom?” Once all the information she could quickly bring up was on the PaDDs, she gently pushed one to each of the members at the table. “Simple intelligence on our opponents, some of which are less stellar than our own.” Ashlyn’s devious grin hints toward the possibility of getting more information if given time and permission. This, of course, generated nervous glances from the other officers at the table.
