“Yes sir,” Avik stated as she fell into character.

As the boatswain, her main duty was to the ship’s function. This included seeing it got repaired to following the Captain’s orders. Her figure rushed across the deck and pulled at the rigging. She untied the firm knot as instructed as shouted for the other men to pull another set.

Soon, the sails unfurled and flapped free. It strained against the wind which gradually pushed the ship forward. The masts creaked in protests, but they held firm as it skirted along the sea. Men scattered to their duties. Some pulled on ropes, others headed down below, and a few assisted in the kitchens.

In the far distance behind the ship, a small darken shape stood out in the background. It turned into the wind and began to follow them.

Ashlyn narrowed her eyes at the oncoming ship, “Hoist the colors, let’s see if they are friendly or if we need to deal with them now before we end up in treacherous waters.” There wasn’t much else to do at this point, if they didn’t respond to the challenge Ahslyn was already planning the next move. She wasn’t ready to have some random other ship start following her without warning.

At the request of hoisting the colors, Avik immediately found the main mast. She untied the rope then began to tug it down. The red flag held a simple lion figure between two spread wings. It flapped in the wind as a clear display for the distant ship.

The strange vessel continued to roll across the waves. Its path not altered, but the speed not increase.

“It could be another ship using the same water route as us.” Avik stated to Ashlyn.

“It’s not uncommon for ships to travel together when they encounter each other on the seas. It helps prevent from getting lost.”

A hope mingled with dark worry over the ship continuing to stalk their wake.

Ashlyn nodded, “Of course Miss Avik, this is why I raised the colors. It is a simple challenge of identification that is standard for all ships that don’t have another means of communication. If they don’t respond to the challenge, then they have nefarious intentions indeed. If they do, then they will at least show who’s side they belong to. If there is anything I remember about human history, it’s the rather combative nature of two factions on different sides.” Trenton gestures toward the crew in a sweeping manner to draw Avik’s attention to them. “If they react favorably toward the other ship, we’ll be fine. If not, we’ll consider that a call to general quarters.”

Avik nodded as her attention returned to the ship. She scanned the mast to see if any flag had been raised and its color. Nothing rose up. Instead, the sailed unfurled and the ship pointed into the wind. It barreled down toward the ship like a predator on prey.

“I think we got our answer, Captain.” Avik shouted, her eyes looked to Ashlyn for orders.

Ashlyn grinned, “Time to test your mettle mates, ready yourselves for combat! Bring us about, what kind of weapons do we have?” Ashlyn started to limber herself up by going through a series of flexes and twists that she normally uses for parkour.

Avik signaled for the nearest crewman and barked orders for the weapons.

“We might have a canon or two, but I don’t think it would get very far. They appear to be out of range at this point.” Avik stated as she mentally calculated the distance. Not an easy feat when she lacked proper or accurate instruments to do it.

Other men were preparing to be boarded as they rushed about. Avik managed to avoid any collision and walked her way up to the Captain’s position. Mindful of the woman’s warm-up stretches, the Vulcan XO carefully darted just out of range.

After a few minutes, the man rushed up. In his arms was a small collection of cutlasses, daggers, and one or two one-shot muskets guns. The powder dangled from a young boy’s grasp who followed the older man up.

Avik glanced at Aslyn. “I hope you know how to use one of these.”

-XO, Avik, Lt. Cmdr

Ashlyn grinned wildly at the XO, “No clue at all. Probably should have had some introductory programs first.” Ashlyn observed the ship for a brief moment. “From what you remember of human ships in the 18th century-ish, where would you say the powder room is? I’m trying to decide if we should target the main source of their weapons and potentially sink their ship or go for the difficult shot of their mast and cripple their ship so they can’t follow us.” Ashlyn held up her cutlass with a raised eyebrow. “I pray we don’t get boarded, this is not my ideal combat element.”
