Soon after arriving on the Constellation, the newly arrived Otolaryngologist (Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist) made his way to sickbay. Ear, nose and throat was such an important part of medical health, and Ray was disappointed that it did not get the same focus that other areas of medicine received. It was so bad, in fact, that the CNO was forced to go into Science as a sideline … Astronomy was a secondary field of interest to him, and that was more readily accepted as a field of expertise in Starfleet Academy and the mainstream ships.

So, he was forced to go outside regular Starfleet Channels and undertook advanced studies in Otolaryngology to a post doctoral level, including giving speeches on ENT health. He was human for the most part, with the exception being his nose and ears. At the moment, his ears seemed to be those of the Earth Serval, ears as large as those of a domestic cat and on the back of them, they were coloured black with a white horizontal band in the middle, much like a pair of unblinking feline eyes. His nose was that of a warthog, with tusks and all!

“My name is spelled Raymond Luxury-Yacht, but it is not pronounced that way,” the newcomer said. It was fairly obvious to any in the room that the ear and nose were fake … the string holding both to the head was clearly visible …

“Exactly how is it pronounced? ” the chief asked as she released the patient she had been treating, and made her way over to the newest member of the crew.

“It is pronounced Throat-Warbler Mangrove and make sure you roll the ‘r’s in the name, that adds a certain amount of … dignity to it. My people have long held the view that the name assigned to the child at birth does not allow the child to express their full uniqueness and that by allowing the child to assign the pronunciation of the name in any way they wish, while keeping the name that was assigned to them enables us to meet legal requirements surrounding ourselves. It is quite a complicated process for outsiders to understand, but it works for us.” He watched her face as she approached his biobed, his eyes filled with wonder.

“That’s a lovely way to pronounce your name.” She gave pronouncing his name paying close attention to how she said it. “Throat-Wabler Mangrove” she said as she scanned the office.

“What a wonderful work of art you have there, so firm, and so perfectly formed, Doctor, may I touch them?” Ray asked, reaching out towards her, his gaze fixed on her as she reached him.

Aurora cocked her head to the side a little as he asked to touch her, and the she looked down at her chest then back up at him. “You want to touch them already?” She asked as she took a step back Shouldn’t you at least buy me dinner first!”

“My past tests demonstrate that the best results come being able to test them both before and after the dining experience, Doctor,” the CNO replied, “their outputs in response to the sight and indeed the smell put out by the food being dined upon require specialist studies. Sometimes, depending on the food, I’ve known for them to perk up and take notice, and on other occasions they’ve sagged. Olfaction is such an important part of the sensory systems of both sentient and non-sentient beings around the galaxy, but unfortunately, it is mostly taken for granted, without the appropriate consideration given to it or its loss. I mean, it doesn’t have the same importance placed on it as sight or hearing, but could you imagine not being able to smell? Not being able to fully appreciate the flavour and taste of your food and drink? Not being able to pick your nose? Please, Doctor, they look ripe and plump and juicy …”

The doctor quickly looked around sickbay making sure there was no one around. She leaned in as she spoke “just this once, and you still owe me dinner!”
