Torgh was amused. Typical though for people talking with the ‘counselor’ - question avoidance. “Your tombstone?” he repeated. Somewhere in there he wasn’t quite making himself understood but could not really figure out where. The boy was like a Targ pup that had gotten its first scent of blood and could hardly contain itself. Well, enthusiasm was good.

“Hmm, my tombstone… well… something like - Never gave up the search fo knowledge would read quite well,” he said with a smile.

Torgh grunted then stood. More things to move out. Tapping the seat that he was in he indicated for Byr to take the other end. “Noble,” he replied. He could respect that form of statement.

After Byr had answered the first question he followed that up with, “Easier? Do we really need life easier?” By the way his tone relaxed, while it still hinted of challenge this was a question more conversational than earlier.
- Torgh

“Well, coming from a culture with values very different from Starfleet, but still members - we learn from each other, that in itself makes life easier - because we can begin to understand each other, and with understanding comes new technological advancements, and new ways of life we didn’t think of looking at before,” Byr reponded to the counsellor’s question. “We should approach everything with an open mind, like the Federation have for us,” he said, referencing both the Klingon and Andorian race by pointing between the two of them. If anyone could understand what he meant, it was another warrior race that had joined with the Federation, and also at one time were enemies of the organisation they now belonged to, the Federation respecting both of the cultures through their actions.

The Klingon would have liked to argue the point however he was the counselor and, as much as he’d like to have disputes settled with Bat’leth or other challenges, his was a profession of words and of understanding. Of course that was understanding skewed by his own perspectives. He thought to play the opposition. “It is hard enough for people to come together - you and I for instance or you and anyone else due to our own individual differences - is not races coming together more a matter of mutual self interest than wanting to actually get along?”

“It certainly is, yes. But, one can lead to the next” Byr replied. “After all, the curiosity that we each share, can sometimes lead to that getting along, even if there is other motives behind it initially,” he said.

He considered what he had said. “What really forms bonds to you? Science? Necessity? Biology?”
- Torgh

“I would say all of the above, and more. Bonds can be formed in the most unlikely of circumstances, I mean - I managed to befriend a tellarite in the Academy! And they aren’t exactly easy to get along with” Byr chuckled at the statement, recalling his time in his second year. He learned how the tellarites communicate, and that they have a habit of coming across as rude. Byr understood that this was a cultural thing, and was able to garner the respect, and they had shared drinks during the rest of their training.

“So, I would say science, biology, necessity, but also curiosity and respect each form those bonds. The bonds are different, depending on the cause of it, but only one of those things is seeing only part of the picture,” Byr concluded in his answer.

Befriending a Tellarite. What was the point of that? Torgh thought. “I knew a Tellarite. He had been in so many fights over his rudeness that he had decided against dentistry and became a professional wrestler. There his insults were … expected. He found his niche.”

Coming back to the moment the Klingon tried to work his mind around that answer. Then he laughed. “That was more of a ‘shotgun’ answer than anything. I’m going to throw this out to you, scientist Byr. Bonds form in the furnace of adversity. How do you analyze that?”
- Torgh

“I would say that adversity can indeed lead to cultural growth. I entirely agree - I mean look at the Klingon Empire and the Federation. We’ve been at war with each other before, now we’re allies. Only because we come to understand one another better. We’re warrior cultures, the humans have always been more… curious species. We know that being curious can get us into trouble, but the humans do it anyway, as an example. If it wasn’t for our disagreements, then we wouldn’t be learning from each other,” Byr responded to the question, “Comfort doesn’t inspire growth, after all,” he said as he raised one shoulder.

One Earther once said, “Great things never come from comfort zones.” He grinned. “Did you not say that science seeks to help make life more .. comfortable? Is that not an irony. Putting that together one would suggest that the purpose of science was to make a society complacent and unproductive.”
Torgh

“Comfort is dangerous, but only if you get stuck there,” Byr said in response “Comfort shouldn’t last. It should be like adrenaline, a brief time and then you should move on. It’s an endless cycle. Improvements are made, which leads to improvements being needed elsewhere to keep up with that change, and so on and so on. Eventually the start of that chain is outdated and under par with the rest of our discoveries. And so the cycle begins again. Comfort is the small victory moments between each of those times. It’s just risky to stagnate there,” he says as he smiles towards the end of his views on the matter.

The little blue fellow might have a head full of discoveries and glory but there was some areas that made sense. He still felt that Byr would rather read than drink, but one thing at a time. “Good. Tell me a time when you have experienced both in your life to know what each was like.” The room had little left to move. The past Counselor was horrible for furnishings but thankfully utilized few of them. Torgh figured that the appointment would be over when they were done.

“Well, for me personally, I have a very physical example, that I learned to apply to my academic approach as well. As you know, Andoria is a cold planet. I grew up there, I spent most of my life there, and so though it can be a dangerous environment, it is something I became comfortable in. So, when moving to Earth to start at the Academy in San Fransisco, the temperature difference was much different. I had to adapt, and at first it was uncomfortable, I found myself feeling warm all of the time, when people were complaining about the cold. During my time on Earth, I got used to the weather in San Fransisco, though still missing the chilled winds of Andoria. It’s something to experience, that’s for sure,” Byr reminisced with a smile. “So, change had to happen, and I had to adapt to another planet and it’s warmer atmosphere. I think I would melt into a puddle if I went to Vulcan,” he added, with a slight smile.
