“Hah” James laughed “I taught at the Vulcan Science Academy fer four years, lemme tell ye, practical experience trumps theoretical exercises any day of the week” He said with a smile “Sit” It wasn’t an offer “What do ye want frem service? Learn the ‘verse, do exxperiments, Captain a ship?” He asked between puffs of his pipe.

“Well, I must admit - I must agree, sir. Practical experience is definitely more beneficial, getting your hands dirty and trying new things is how things are discovered. My interest is in learning what I can first and foremost, and see where that will take me - learning things about the galaxy and the universe was the reason I joined Starfleet, and my motives have not changed. That won’t be possible without a little bit of experimentation, of course - I think one complements the other very well. If that leads to me in the captain’s chair one day, then so be it - but I’m more interested in discovering what there is to be discovered among the stars. And the different cultures that reside there, how they live, how they behave, that sort of thing. What in their environment makes them different, and what makes them the same as everyone else. That comes through learning and understanding. I’m more interested in the science behind the life - the technology they use to make their lives easier, as the Federation has for us,” Byr answered after taking the seat directed to him. “That’s my stand on things - we can become better at things if we learn,” he concluded as his attenae twitched in excitement as he spoke about his passion.

“Aye yer a freshie that’s fer certain” James said, smiling widely with his pipe between his teeth “Well before we get to the fun questions give me a little insight into yer expertise, what did you specialise in and what can ye do?”

“I specialise in cultural sciences sir, studying and understanding how cultures develop, assess their current cultural and technological level for calculating a rough estimate of what their progression rate is, in an obseverational way, sir. It’s fascinating to learn how cultures have evolved once they are also contacted, it’s important to make a good first impression, after all. I feel we can learn a lot from other worlds and how they develop, and where that has led them as a society.” Byr answered.

“Being accepted by the federation, as an Andorian. The fact that you allowed us to continue our cultural ways, though maybe unusual in your eyes, you accepted it anyway. It was a gesture that most of us are to proud to admit and thanking you for such a great. It’s inspired me to see what we could learn as a culture from other people’s… point of view, as they say,” Byr also said, obviously inspired by that decision.

James took a few long moments puffing his pipe as he considered the young mans answer. “Interesting ” He paused for a drink Just to explain what yer job will be, You will start on Delta Shift alongside whoever has been assigned as yer roommate I presume, that’s usually how we do it. If you do well and prove useful and fun ye’ll be on te Beta or Alpha shifts in no time. I suggest ye get familiar with the bridge controlls as soon as you can, I smell bridge duties in yer future lad” He smiled a toothy smile “Now tell me, whatye do fer fun?”

Byr acknowledged the orders he had been given. Delta shift was always a start, and he had made a note to refresh himself on the bridge controls when he could. “As for fun, I enjoy the human sport of snowboarding. I mean, Andoria was effectively one big ski resort,” he said with a chuckle. “And I also do enjoy reading,” he added as his antannae twitched a little.
