<Snip>OOC: Long weekends .. the bane of my posting …
IC:
“Not from the quartermasters, then,” he said, disappointed. But then recovered. “Nice catch all the same. Lend a hand. Pull this out into the corridor.” Torgh was already hefting his side and pushing it. He peered more closely at the man. “Andorian. A noble people when they want to be.”Once the couch was out. “Against the wall. Everything has to go.” He turned to go back in and then paused. “If we find any tribbles … you handle it.” Peering around he pointed out a couple of matching chairs that went with the couch. “Those next.”
“Now .. why are you here? Evaluation? What’s wrong with you?”
TorghByr shook his head, but assisted the Klingon as requested. He had done a few Ushaan duels in his life, so his physical form was rather athletic from the training he regularly did, especially for a science officer. He assisted as requested and when the comment about tribbles came up, Byr asked “Why, do you have a tribble problem aboard the ship at the moment?”
That question caught Torgh up and he stopped in mid stride. Heavy brows furrowing his eyes darted about suspiciously. “It is a very large ship. Anything could be here.” His eyes fixed on the corner and, balancing the poofy chair on one arm he quickly pulled back the seat cushion and looked in .. just in case. “Especially this room.”
He found it odd that the counsellor was getting rid of all the office furniture, and was curious and then when Torgh asked about why he was here, he sighed. “I’m new here, so I have to have the mandatory psychological evaluation,” he said. “As much as I like playing porter, I’m a science officer not a quartermaster, and I am curious as to why you are getting rid of things that are specifically related to the office of the counsellor, sir” he said, pointing at the plaque that stated CNS on the door.

“Office of Counselor? Anyone can furnish as they like and this is more suited for an asylum or …” he made a face .. “Risa.” He grunted and continued to carry the chair with the Ensign’s help. “I will furnish it appropriately.” As that chair was unceremoniously dumped onto the couch, Torgh stalked back in. “No, why are you here? Anyone can board a ship and wave a flag and say they belong here because someone told you to be here. But why are you here?” He added. “Call me Torgh.”
- Torgh“OK, Torgh it is, and if it helps some, I always found Risa to be too hot. As to why am I here… why I joined Starfleet in the first place… I’m here to see what I can discover - Space has a lot to offer for a curious mind. It’s also highly dangerous, and well - the thrill of that is almost as exciting as the Ushaan,” the Andorian replied, attennae slightly twitching as he did so. “On the rare occasion…” the thud of the chair landing on the sofa outside, “even moreso,” Byr said, assisting with the other chair in the process, and another thud a few seconds later as the second chair was dumped outside, though Byr made sure the corridor wasn’t blocked up by furniture.

“Too hot?! Pathetic,” he replied, then listened intently to him as they shifted furniture. “So then as a scientist and seeking danger - an honorable quest - you would be doing .. what?” His eyes lit up. “Building the better bat’leth? The science of training a Targ without sacrificing fingers?”
He paused as the chair was dumped. “Fine. Danger. Challenge. Curiosity. Daring do.” He leaned in, his weight almost causing the precariously balanced - more like tossed - chair to topple. A crewman skirted around the duo in the rather width challenged area of the corridor. “So what? What is the end result of your facing this danger head on?”
- Torgh“In honestly, I always find the journey to the answers fascinating, and well - the idea is to learn more about things,” Byr replied “After all, the more we understand, the easier it makes everyone’s lives,” he shrugged. Byr always thought of the answer as only a part of the discovery. He always found he learned more as he was in the middle of a practice than afterwards - it was during the journey when he improved himself. “I mean, I also enjoy the excitement and the rush it brings as you take risks, the adrenaline that surges through your body as you take greater and greater risks, pushing your limits that bit further each time,” he said with a child-like joy.

Torgh hefted a couple of seaside paintings off the wall and tossed them into the hall, narrowly missing a passing crewman. “Good dodge,” he said to the crewman who looked like he was in the midst of making a universal gesture of distaste to Torgh until he spotted the pips and redirected his hand to smoothing his hair. Torgh had already turned away. “To learn,” Torgh said, repeating what the ensign said. “We all learn, do we not? What makes your learning any better than the rest of us?” he challenged, “To make it a career?”
“Byrn,” Torgh said, abbreviating his name with little apparent concern whether it was an issue for the Ensign or not. The ice blue man looked like he was about to dance when talking about pushing himself and the adrenaline rush. It was not that Torgh could not relate. He could. But he kept up the challenge. “And if you do not feel this adrenaline rush in the day to day drudgery of life as a scientist locked away in your laboratory?”
- Torgh“You’d be surprised, Torgh,” Byr chuckled. “Life is an experiment - a series of trials and tests, so what I’m doing in my lab is no different from seeking out that adrenaline. The unknown gives the same feeling as climbing up a mountain. It’s the discovery, and not being entirely sure what will happen next. I don’t think my learning is any less or more than anybody else’s - just I like to focus on it. I have merely recognised it’s importance, that is all,” he responded, thinking about it. “Some people know learning is important, but don’t go out of their way to learn something new. Some do, but they are looking for patterns - me - I’m looking for things I’ve never seen before, things that I don’t know - so that I can understand them and find out more about them. That is the true thrill of learning,” he said as his antennae twitched in excitement just thinking about it.

Torgh paused, actually sitting in one of the remaining overstuffed chairs. It made a rubbery flatulent like sound on his descent. Torgh didn’t seem phased. He assessed the young Andorian. He was incorrigible and tenacious. Torgh liked that and the little fellow was growing on him. True, with Andorians he had always imagined the antennae suddenly elongating and being used as a whip. He had mixed feelings about that. “Life is a battle, yes,” he agreed. “So let me understand. You research and seek out new things because it gives you a thrill?” He leaned forward; the chair straining and still sounding off. “What then will happen in those times when there are no new discoveries on top of discovery?” His tone was not challenging here as the other times, but softer. “What do you want your tombstone to say? He discovered much? Byrna? He paused. “Do you mind if I call you Byrna? I’m afraid my teeth will mutiny if I attempted your entire name. You are a scientist. Discoveries area a part of you. I get it. But where do you want it to lead?”
- Torgh“Byr will do,” Byr replied with a slight smile. “And well, we can never know everything, that’s impossible. There are always new things to discover. As to where it would lead, well… maybe something that can be used to make everybodies lives easier - that’s what I’m always looking as the end goal. I love finding out new things, as to when there is nothing left to “discover” as you say, the next question I would ask myself is things like is it safe to use, are there any practical applications, would it make the lives of everyone easier?” he answered. “That’s the next stage - how we use what we find out,” he concluded excitedly.

Torgh was amused. Typical though for people talking with the ‘counselor’ - question avoidance. “Your tombstone?” he repeated. Somewhere in there he wasn’t quite making himself understood but could not really figure out where. The boy was like a Targ pup that had gotten its first scent of blood and could hardly contain itself. Well, enthusiasm was good.
“Hmm, my tombstone… well… something like - Never gave up the search fo knowledge would read quite well,” he said with a smile.
After Byr had answered the first question he followed that up with, “Easier? Do we really need life easier?” By the way his tone relaxed, while it still hinted of challenge this was a question more conversational than earlier.
- Torgh“Well, coming from a culture with values very different from Starfleet, but still members - we learn from each other, that in itself makes life easier - because we can begin to understand each other, and with understanding comes new technological advancements, and new ways of life we didn’t think of looking at before,” Byr reponded to the counsellor’s question. “We should approach everything with an open mind, like the Federation have for us,” he said, referencing both the Klingon and Andorian race by pointing between the two of them. If anyone could understand what he meant, it was another warrior race that had joined with the Federation, and also at one time were enemies of the organisation they now belonged to, the Federation respecting both of the cultures through their actions.
