The computer voice pinged up immediately =^=The Chief Science Officer is located in Arboretum 2 on deck 26=^= The voice informed the Ensign.

Constellation Computer

As the computer located the science officer Byr nodded towards the ensign. “Well, looks like that should be my first stop,” he said with a smile. He had a brief look over the ship information and headed towards the turbolift. Stepping in he requested deck 26, and a few moments later the doors swooshed open. Heading down the corridor, he looked around with a fascination, before arriving at the Arboretum. Entering the room, the smells and scents that he picked up from the various plants in the room had a strangly relaxing feeling for him. Seeing the officers working, he walked up who looked to be whoever was the officer on duty at the time and asked “Um, excuse me, I’m looking for the chief science officer, I’m new here?” he asked.

The men pointed towards a path. The path led to a small grove of trees where a single bench and two garden chairs facing it resided. On the Bench sat a man with raven black hair in a Scientists uniform with his back to the entrance to the small hidey grove. There were thick clouds of smoke floating from the man’s head at regular intervals, next to him was a glass bottle of blue liquid and a single glass half filled with the same contents. “Come on Ensign” The man spoke in a soft Glaswegian accent, an oxymoron if there ever was one. “Welcome onboard” He said without turning around, how he knew who was joining him was less than obvious.

Following the direction he was pointed in, Byr heads towards to the small grove in which he was directed. Seeing the blue uniform and pips, he was about to ask whether the figure was who he was looking for when the man spoke. Byr’s attenae twitched with curiosity as he tried to sneak a peak over the shoulder of the officer to see if he could find a way as to how he was able to identify him without seeing him. “Thank you, sir,” he responded.

He never really paid attention to the different accents of Earth, they all sounded rather similar to him, so as the man spoke he was surprised by the accent, having not heard it before, piquing the Andorian’s curiosity once again. “Ensign Byrnaterro Ch’riaqer, reporting in for duties, sir” he added, guessing from the way the man responded that he was the person he was looking for. “I understand it’s a hard name to say, so I also go by Byr, sir” he also said, knowing how many of the other races have had difficulty in pronuncing his name.

“Byrnaterro Chriaker” James allowed the words to Simmer “Byrnaterro Ch’riaqer” He corrected himself after a moments thought “I think Byr will do fine, have a seat ensign” He pointed to one of the chairs. Once the Ensign reached the other side he could see that hanging from the side of the Scientists mouth was a long wooden pipe, the originator of the cloud of smoke. The scent was a surprisingly pleasant cherry mixture. The man grabbed his glass slowly and took a single sip “So tell me Ensign, You just graduate the Academy?” He asked as if he didn’t already know

Byr nodded as he was asked the question “yes sir, specialized in cultural sciences. So, if I may ask sir, what is that your smoking?” Byr asked, his antennae twitching from the scent. “It smells rather sweet,” he added, the enhanced senses provided from the racial antennae strenghtening the smell somewhat.

James removed the pipe from his mouth and gave it a thorough stare for a moment as if he’d forgotten that he’d had it “‘Tis a pipe, synthetic cherry tobacco that I’ve been growing. I had a grandfather that smoked real tobacco, always had a pleasant smell that stuck with me. I started growing my own faux plants over the years, not the healthiest habit but I do enjoy it thoroughly” He said with a vacant smile, placing the pipe back in his mouth and taking another puff. “Tell me, why Starfleet?”

CSO

Byr listened intently as James spoke about the tobacco, he could almost taste it through the antennae, and he wasn’t sure if he liked it or not. “Well, sir, I’ve always had a fascination with discovery, and well, what better place to do that than in Starfleet? Unless your a vulcan, I guess,” he said with a slight smile. “On Andoria, it’s more about survival than it is about anything else - it’s a harsh world. It’s why a lot of Andorians end up in the more athletic jobs. But I’ve always had a curious mind - which got me into the sciences. Understanding others is just as important as others understanding us. It’s why I focused on cultural sciences - to learn more about other cultures, of course I also have some experience in biology and xenobiology to compensate that. Part of understanding the why, is understanding the how,” Byr replied with a burning passion. If the words were written down, it would look almost scripted. However, it was obvious he believed in what he said.

“Hah” James laughed “I taught at the Vulcan Science Academy fer four years, lemme tell ye, practical experience trumps theoretical exercises any day of the week” He said with a smile “Sit” It wasn’t an offer “What do ye want frem service? Learn the ‘verse, do exxperiments, Captain a ship?” He asked between puffs of his pipe.

CSO

“Well, I must admit - I must agree, sir. Practical experience is definitely more beneficial, getting your hands dirty and trying new things is how things are discovered. My interest is in learning what I can first and foremost, and see where that will take me - learning things about the galaxy and the universe was the reason I joined Starfleet, and my motives have not changed. That won’t be possible without a little bit of experimentation, of course - I think one complements the other very well. If that leads to me in the captain’s chair one day, then so be it - but I’m more interested in discovering what there is to be discovered among the stars. And the different cultures that reside there, how they live, how they behave, that sort of thing. What in their environment makes them different, and what makes them the same as everyone else. That comes through learning and understanding. I’m more interested in the science behind the life - the technology they use to make their lives easier, as the Federation has for us,” Byr answered after taking the seat directed to him. “That’s my stand on things - we can become better at things if we learn,” he concluded as his attenae twitched in excitement as he spoke about his passion.
