Cross smiled an easy grin as he folded his long frame into the chair in front of the COS’ desk. He had a feeling he was going to like his boss. “I am Lieutenant junior grade Cross, Ma’am. Transferred here from the Ogawa. I have seen to all my check ins and am cleared for duty.” He proffered the padd with his transfer orders on it for Pierce’s perusal if she was so inclined.

Pierce took the padd, and glanced it over briefly. “Yup, it says to come here! And that signature there… well it looks admirally to me!” She slid the padd back, and then tapped her fingers against her temple for a few moments. “Oh! I know!”

She started tapping at her computer. “Ah. So.. you’re a psy… psi… head looker-atter! Doesn’t that pay better than being a security guard?”

Cross smiled, “Quite possibly but I am more a man of action then a desk pusher. I prefer actively solving mysteries to just dissecting them. ” He liked this woman so far, she was obviously not a staid, regulation type.

“Good, good! Just don’t go looking for trouble when you don’t have to. Trouble finds us easily enough!” She drummed her fingers on the desk for a moment. “Tell me, Cross, have you ever conducted an jello investigation? If they don’t fill that empty position, you know they’re gonna expect US to do it, and I’m biased in favor of blue.”

Cross blinked then stared at his new boss for the count of a few seconds, trying to see if she was serious. She certainly seemed to be. Was this a test? “I would have to say no, sir. I have not. Will that be something we are expected to do?” He asked in all seriousness.

She leaned in with a grin splitting her face; it seemed to be her normal expression. “Who knows? Who can tell the future?” She raised an eyebrow. “Blue,” she added.

Cross blinked and nodded,”Blue, yes sir.” He murmured.

Her expression turned a bit more serious. “But yes, trouble will find us.”

Cross smiled a wry grin,”It always seems too. That seems to be one of life’s constants.”

“Yupperrooni! So, didja have any questions or anything? Looks like everything here is good and ready for you to be starting duties.”

“Just one, Lieutenant. Do you prefer ‘Ma’am’ or ‘sir’ when being addressed or just Lieutenant? ” Cross answered preferring this to be answered from the outset so he didn’t cause any offense.

Kat raised an eyebrow. “Oh, that question! Well, if you call me ‘sir’ then you’re implying that I’m not feminine! And if you call me ‘ma’am’ you’re calling me out for being a woman. But if you call me Lieutenant, that implies you’re scared of either choice! A dilemma to be sure!” She giggled. An almost evil giggle.

“Either is fine, really, I’m not going to bite your head off,” she finally allowed. “I guess I prefer sir just because its more traditional, but its ok either way”

“Ah good.” Peter said with a sigh and relaxed his shoulders that had tensed up with the first part of her statement.”Thank you, sir.” He added with a winning smile. “I was wondering if I might take a turn on the bridge?”
