Once again, Nevin found himself stood in the silence of his CO’s ready room. The name plate on the desk was different. The circumstances were different too. At least he knew where Ravenfall was, unlike Nakuto who had dissapeared into thin air without a trace. Part of Nevin felt guilty wishing the office was his own on a permanent basis, but there was no doubt his use of the space was temporary. If SEAI worked her magic, then Ravenfall would be back and could walk through the door at any moment. If Ravenfall’s condition was more serious, she would be the second CO in a row that Nevin had failed to protect and he was unlikely to be offered a command of his own.

“Redecorating already?” The soft baritone of the Chief Intelligence Officer came from behind the Young Bajoran. It seemed he had somehow entered the room without the door making its usual swishing sound. The large man was leaning against a wall. He wasn’t smiling but he seemed light-hearted.”How are you holding up Commander?” He asked softly.

Nevin waited a moment for the door to close. Truth was he had been so distracted in his thoughts he hadn’t heard it open in the first place. Whilst he was a little annoyed that Peter had not rung the chime, he appreciated his genuine concern.

“Redecorating? No,” Nevin said, “I made that mistake last time I sat on at this desk.”

“I apologize for not ringing, I wasn’t aware anyone was inside” He smiled apologetically “I came to check the Security updates since you’re taking over.”

“I wasn’t going to use this room, but it seemed like the safest space to review the bridge’s security footage,” He said. He indicated to the seat inviting Peter to sit. Nevin sat in the chair at the Captain’s side of the desk. He spun the console around to show Peter the footage.

Peter moved next to the Executive Officer quietly. For a large man, he moved silently, almost cat-like.

Moments before Strensvale entered the bridge, both the audio and video feed cut out in a wall of snow. The image restored moments later. The feed was soundless. after a few minutes there was again a static interuption to the feed and when the feed restored the audio returned.

“Strensvale never entered the bridge. What was it you didn’t say in the briefing?” Nevin asked. He continued without giving Peter chance to speak, “I have had strong suspitions that Section 31 operatives are active on this ship. If you were one, I doubt that you would have brought this to my attention, but as an Intelligence Officer you are the most likely to know something about Section 31’s actions and motives.”

Nevin leaned back in his chair and folded his arms, “If you can’t answer the question out loud, say so and why. I don’t want them on this ship. We need to know we can trust the crew and when we do not know each others objectives, we cannot pull in the same direction.”

Peter frowned at the mention of Section 31. How many people on this ship were familiar with the secretive organization, maybe that contributed to the Vikings lousy reputation these days. “She entered through the Jefferies tubes is what I said, not the lifts. There are no security recordings in the tube system.” Peter crossed his arms “How come you are aware of the existance of Section 31?” He asked with a firm look.

“Most people are aware of it’s existence, just not what they do. Or how disruptive and malevolant they can be,” Nevin replied, “I’ve experienced it first hand. It is not something I’d like to repeat. I know that part of their job is to remain invisible. Undetected. I also know that doesn’t always happen. That’s when things get… messy.”

“Which one?” he asked pointing at the now paused footage of the bridge.

Peter tapped into the computer to show which panel the Engineer exited “I have to wonder though, why would S31 operatives want to sabotage bridge surveilance so that an junior Engineer gets there without being noticed. She hardly seems the type to work for them”
