Ensign Sharvi was early to Lieutenant Darz’s office. He was uneasy about the night before, but ready to start his shift with the lieutenant. He had remembered the ghost in the cell and wondered what that was all about, who was the ghost, why did it point at her. Why was the force field activated and now it is not? He was curious to step inside the cell, but thought better of it, don’t want to look foolish first night on shift. He thought about the walk to his quarters, and how he met the ghost klingon and her service record files, his uneasiness of being able to trust her was returning. He shook his head, he did t want to think about that, he needed to focus on what a shift with his superior working beside him would be like… He sat by her office door and waited for her to show up.Dar came around the corner a moment later. “Are you ready to go? We have to check out the edges of the ‘off limit’ zones. Make sure the affected areas haven’t moved any. Then we’ll check the rosters and see if anyone is ‘missing’ since the last personnel check.” She moved into her office then came back out a moment later with a small PADD. “Let’s go…”
She moved back the way she came with a determined look on her face. The ship hadn’t been kind to her the night before, either. It had let the shade of her lover wander the room chastising her for trying to take care of others again. It talked her into doubting herself to the point that the dreams took over and carried out the fears in the replay of her ex’s death over and over.
The Ensign followed her keeping her pace, wondering why she was so cold toward him. He decided to keep his silence, in case she was in a bad mood. His mind still wandering about what he saw last night.
Ensign SharviThey were on the lower crew deck heading for the off limits area when the lights started flickering. Kalika paused a moment. “They do this sometimes. It’s just wiring.” She went to a nearby junction panel and took it off. She reached in and a moment later the lights steadied. “See… I sometimes wonder if there is someone on the ship that is sabotaging the panels and making this more than it is. I just can’t figure out why.” She set the panel back in place and glanced at him to see how he was taking it.
“Why would someone sabotage the panels throughout the whole ship, though? That would seem pointless and counterproductive, especially if crew like us keep going around fixing what they did.” He said thoughtfully. He didn’t really show an emotion. Since he didn’t fully know her motives or if he could trust her, he kept an expressionless face.
Ensign Sharvi“I don’t know…” she offered with a shrug as the panel was replaced and she nodded down the hall. “I think a lot of the ‘haunting’ on this ship is pranks perpetuated by folks with alterior motives. Perhaps at one point, something broke down somewhere. A ‘ghost story’ was attached to it, so no one fixed it.” She paused where the darkness swallowed the rest of the hall, her hand motioning to the blackness that faded into nothingness. “And it cascaded into so much trouble, half the ship is crippled from it.” She didn’t want to admit she had seen ghosts, or that the computer knew things about her that no one else did.
“I believe there is something weird with this ship. There is more to it than people sabotaging or not fixing things and blaming ghosts. I know I am new, but I’ve done my homework on this vessel I believe it is haunted.” He said as they walked down a dark corridor. As they walked further, they could see a light on in a room, and he thought he could hear someone speaking. “Nobody is supposed to be in this sector of the ship?” He asked.
Ensign SharviKalika sighed mentally. She had those feelings, too. But she hadn’t expected the newcomer to voice them as well. Thankfully, the room he indicated drew her attention and saved her from needing to respond. Frowning, she nodded. “Yeah… it’s supposed to be empty. The lights aren’t the only thing erratic. Sometimes the atmospheric controls go out deeper down the hall. There is a barrier set up at that perimeter though.”
She moved forward and was about to palm open the door when she looked back at Sharvi, “Ready?” she mouthed to him.
“Ready” he said, as they raised their phasers up, she opened the door. They entered the room, and there was a ghostly appearing male in the room with his back to them. He pointed to her, and then disappeared. “Ok, you know what, no disrespect, but before we continue, you and I need to talk.” He said to her.
Kalika froze as the image pointed then faded. Her phaser was down and she blinked a couple times as she tried to brush it from her mind. “No…” Came the barely audible whisper from her lips.
It took her a minute to register that Tath had spoken. “What? Yes. Ok. Talk about what?” Despite looking at him now, her eyes kept flickering to where the ghostly image had been. It couldn’t be ‘him’ because he was dead on a planet in another portion of the quadrant. Obviously the ship was just playing with her again.
Kalika looked back at Tath, but this time there was a hint of fear and uncertainty there.
“I will be honest with you, I don’t know what is going on with this ship. Last night a weird thing happened and I’m pretty sure I seen him last night. Do you know who he is,what he wants with us?” The Ensign didn’t know how to fully ask what he wanted to know, wasn’t sure if he should reveal all of what happened last night.
Kalika shook her head. “He looked like that?” She pointed to where the ghost had been. Her first instinct was to tell him everything. After all, he just said he had seen the ghost as well. But then her protective shell kicked in. “It’s nothing. My old Department Head. He’s dead. Died on an away mission.” She started back for the door, trying to go around him as she made two failed attempts to holster her phaser before succeeding. Her words were clipped, sharp, she didn’t want to get into this with him. Everyone she got close to got killed. She had to focus on protecting them. That was all that mattered.
“Ok, then we should move on. Looks like we have a long night of checks ahead of us.” He said as they turned the light off in the room and closed the door, making sure it was locked.
