(snip)

Rende left Korczak’s office, PaDD in hand. She looked at it again…how, after all this time, could it be possible? Rende stopped in the corridor and stared at the image. He hadn’t aged a day, well maybe a day after 3 centuries. Their son. She reached up to her ear and pressed at the small device. A hold over from their days before Earth. Neither one of them was really ever comfortable not being connected, not having direct communication. So over the centuries Eldorin had repaired them, improved them, and even replaced them once. They were never without them.

“Eldorin, my love, where the h$## are you, right now?” And Rende started moving toward the nearest lift, her stride eating up the distance, a fierceness to her gaze as she headed towards him. “You know what, never mind, our quarters, now.” He’d recognize the edge to her voice, the urgency. When he arrived at their quarters the tension was enough to think she’d been pacing, but Rende didn’t pace. She was sitting on the edge of the couch, knees on elbows, hands clasped in front of her, thumbs tapping together.

She didn’t say a word, she just handed him the PaDD with the picture and service record.

Eldorin heard the familiar beep followed by tone he only herd when in combat situations or the one time he had forgotten the macaroni salad in 1977 at the potluck hosted by Lord Mayor David Cook. “I’m in my office darling… Where else would I be at this… Of course” He finished as he rose from his desk and nodded to a couple of NE’s and crewman saying, “Finish the diagnostics on te’ impulse manifold, I don’t like that we’re down .25% return on our fuel. I know it’s in spec but just humor me will ye?”

Entering the room he looked at Rende and said “Rende my dear what the ever loving hell is going on? Ye sound like ye seen a ghost!” He took the PaDD and looked at it. There plain as day was a ghost. Eldorin looked up at Rende, then back to the PaDD, and again following that pattern of looking up and down for a few more times before saying, “He’s….alive? After all this time?” He sat next to her and just tossed the PaDD down on the coffee table, a true loss for words. “We looked… for a century we looked it of hope and nothing came of it….”

Rende nodded, unable to say anything at the moment. The service photo seeming to mock her from the table. That for all their knowledge, all their connections, all their effort, they hadn’t found him. “Aye, he’s alive. Tabris is alive…” her voice cracked. Rende was rattled. She reached over and took Eldorin’s hand. “I jus’ came from Korczak’s office. He’s te’ one that told me. Apparently there is someone on board who knows Tabris. Is his friend. He’s askin’ if they will talk to us. Korczak to call him in 45 minutes to go back ta his office.”

Rende picked up the PaDD again and scrolled through the personnel record. Eldorin and Rende weren’t exactly unknowns in Star Fleet.
El’s name was all over the designs for many ships and technology. Of course for years they’d used pseudonyms. It wasn’t until the Federation had become aware as a whole of El-Aurians that they’d started ‘correcting’ their record. She supposed Tabris could have missed them that way. Perhaps he’d simply not looked or had never come across his father’s name. She stopped on the section about family. “El....he has children.” She shook her head in disbelief but a hint of a proud smiled, “And he’s a Star Fleet Engineer.”
