“I’m unsure… His ship blew up after I installed the transwarp coil he wanted incorrectly so that when he attempted to engage it, it would cause an error in the twin warp cores due to a computer virus I hid in the transwarp coil’s coding which created two polar opposite fields which tore it apart at transwarp speed when he engaged the drive. I didn’t seem him die so it’s possible he survived, I just need to believe he’s gone. He might have teleported into a cloaked shuttle, half the ship wasn’t disintegrated either… There was a sizable section of the the bridge and the surrounding area also survived, the Lanius was ripped into pieces. Leo is a snake and a cockroach so if he survived he’ll climb his way back up.” Reira stated, letting her hold his shoulder.
Kara grimaced at Reira’s words, the thought that Leo might yet remain one she did not want to consider after her brief joy at the thought of his destruction.
“Either way, the solution is not good. If he is dead the only parent I’m left with is in a Unicomplex with the Borg Queen with no help of resuce and if he isn’t Section 31 will just reinstate him. The value his sadism and genius too much and he’ll come for me again, he always does…”
Ensign Reira Akaba (Science)
“And if he does,” the half-Klingon stated defiantly, taking hold of Reira’s hand, “then you and I will be ready for him. We have beaten him once before, Reira. And I have no doubt at all that we can beat him again.”
Pushing away the remaining crumbs of her pie, Nakuto got to her feet and began to pace the length of the bar, a gesture she had always adopted in the past when she was in deep thought.
“You know,” she continued, “I may no longer be the Captain of this vessel, Reira. But were the Lanius to drop out of warp before us, right now, then I would risk the termination of this excuse for a career, I would risk my own liberty, even…my own life, to send him and his pathetic collection of deviants that he calls a crew, back to the hell that they crawled out of once and for all. And I do not think I speak in error when I wager that a good deal of the remaining crew would be behind me.”Returning to her seat, she regarded the scientist once more. “You are returned to the Viking, Reira. And so am I. That, at least, is something. And if fate determines that we have been returned to engage in a war then…it is a war that we are ready for. And a war that, I believe, we can win.”

“I wish I was being paranoid.” Reira sighed, thankful for her support in this matter. “As always, I ask too much of you Kara…” He stated, finishing his own food and standing before gasping, staggering back as information filled his head. “Sorry, that was odd… My neural transciever’s been acting up again and I get random flares from the Collective, it can be really overwhelming. There’s a nearby transwarp conduit, they tend to screw with my implants.” The lilac-haired ex drone told his old captain quickly so it wasn’t a medical emergency.
As the scientist was unbalanced by the unexpected and intrusive connection to the Collective, Kara found herself reaching out and grasping for his shoulders in an attempt to keep him upright.
“Does this happen often?” she asked, deep furrows of concern settling across her ridged brow. “Are they attempting to lure you back to them?”
She had always been aware of a conflicting response of profound admiration and tentative fear when in the presence of the former-Borg members of her crew. It had been the same with Lieutenant GLaDOS. She wondered briefly if her one-time CSO had returned to the Collective. Still, the prospect of a channel of communication being available between Reira and the Borg, not to mention one that he seemed to have little control over, was concerning. Although she felt no requirement to alert any other crewmembers to the situation just yet.
“We shall have to see if we can get that under control, Reira,” she commented. “Your mind is strong and, I believe, fully capable of blocking them out. We just need to find the right mental weaponry to enable you to do so.”
Settling back into her throne-chair and curling her hands around a mug of raktajino, she added, “And you do not ask too much of me. You never have. I am your…”
No. No longer could she lay claim to being his commanding officer. No longer was she officially responsible for his life, or for the life of anyone onboard the ship save herself. But that did not make it any less true than it had always been.
“I am your friend. And friends stick together. Fight battles side by side and then toast their victory side by side after. I may no longer be a Captain but I am still a Klingon!”
And indeed, every word from her lips had been the truth. But still, somewhere deep in the shadowed recesses of her tired mind, a small but urgent voice was whispering the question; was it truly Reira who was asking of her? Or was it the Borg?
“I’m glad you’re so optimisitic and battle ready, reminds me of myself back when I had the courage to stand up for myself…” He smiled again, a rare occassion. “I don’t usually believe in luck but seeing you here makes me happy, Kara. I’m not sure there’s a language I know with the capability of expressing how better I feel with you around.”
Ensign Reira Akaba (Science)
She raised her raktajino as a makeshift toast. “To coming home. For both of us. And this time,” she added with a wink, “I intend to stay.”
No need to share, in that moment, the unescapable fact that her remaining on the Viking was no longer under her control. She had heard rumours that they were currently en-route to the nearest starbase for repairs - something that Starfleet had grappled desperately to avoid in her day. Perhaps the luck-bringer on this vessel was not she but their new Captain? Perhaps, with Ravenfall at the helm, they would see the crumbling starship returned to its former glory? And perhaps, whilst anchored to the starbase with no immediate escape, Kara Nakuto would once more be subjected to the scrutiny and judgement of her superior officers? If that happened then she could see only one possible outcome, one course of action they would have no choice but to take - the removal of their former Captain for the safety and well-being of every man and woman onboard.
