It was quarter to three in the afternoon and Quinn was sat in her office, counting down the minutes until her scheduled briefing with the entire security team. She’d still not found time to decorate yet, but that could wait until later. She had more important things to deal with right now. Ok, so about to go out and properly exert my authority over a group of individuals, some of which are a lot older and have been in Star-Fleet a lot longer than me. No big, right? While she said that to herself, the truth was she did feel a touch nervous. She only got one shot at this and if she screwed it up, she’d be fighting her own team just as much as all the nasties that lurked out in the ever-expanding galaxy for the foreseeable future. She took a deep breath and stood up. Moving to the centre of the small room, she began lightly moving through the motions of a tae-kwon-do pattern. There was not nearly enough room for her to do it properly, so instead, she settled for pivoting around on the spot. She must have rattled through at least half a dozen by the time her alarm went off to tell her that it was time to go. Ok, here goes nothing. She smiled to herself as she made her way to the office door, but quickly neutralised it by the time it opened and she stepped out. Time to rally the troops.

Security chiefIt had been some time since a proper tea ceremony had been performed with Ovik involved. He had gotten in a good routine of doing these out at the colony he was posted on before the Sentinel, but that was a while ago. The Vulcan had everything set and began the meditation and some low murmuring. The tea was steeping with the freshly-hot water, and the vapors from the dried leaves began to rise up to hit his nose. It was a smokey scent that was pleasing to him. Out of all of his Vulcan heritage, a good portion of which he did not adhere to, the tea meditation was one of his favorite.
Of course, that was before his alarm chime slowly grew in volume from silence to slightly audible - it was a soothing wake-up call which he used for these times as well. After all his planning and duty shifts, he had not planned appropriately for the chief’s briefing. “Drat,” he said outloud, opening his eyes. He took the carafe and held it to his mouth, taking a gentle sip. It was almost perfect. But then again, the timing was off. “Another time,” he whispered, taking another sip. Ovik put his things down and got ready for the meeting.
Truth be told, Ovik was a bit nervous meeting the security chief for only the second time. And getting to see his crew mates. Nerves were not rattled much on Vulcans, but Ovik was not a typical Vulcan. He felt the anxiety, ever so slightly, increasing as they all made their way to the security area. Ovik entered and walked over to the central area of the space. He gave a quick salute and settled into a comfortable spot to stand.

Quinn surveyed her assembled security team. Several of them, the ones she had encountered moments after docking, were young, green ensigns straight from the academy. However, others were older, having clearly served in Star-Fleet for years. In other words, people with far more Star-Fleet experience than she had. However, she’d been around the block several times on her travels, knew what was out there and she had read several reports from other security chiefs who had returned from their missions. The bottom line, the red shirts they all wore were effectively big old targets. It had not been a shock to her. In fact, it was the reason she had chosen security in the first place; that’s where the danger, the excitement… the brushes with death were. Ok, Quinn, showtime. You can do this. You can do anything.
Lt Phy-Knight strode forward, her uniform pristine and her long flaming-red hair held up in a tight knot behind her head, a far cry from off-duty appearance. “Ok, listen up, people,” she barked, her voice harder than steel and quite impressive for someone of her lithe stature. “I’m not going to pussyfoot about here. Your part of a Ster-Fleet security team, aboard a starship and to cut through all the honour and protecting the Federation crap, it boils down to one thing; you’ll be facing dangerous situations and often. Security has the highest mortality rate of any department within Star-Fleet and the odds of a fatality amongst our number is not in our favour.” As she spoke, Quinn met the gaze of each and every one of her assembled crew. “If any of you were unaware of this and wish to request a transfer, then this is your opportunity to do so.” She paused to allow her words to sink in and see if any of her team would fold.

Security ChiefOvik listened intently as the lieutenant spoke. There was an air of nervousness perhaps, but it didn’t show to most. And when she began to talk, they all listened without a doubt.
Ovik, assuming a sort of “leftenant” position with the crewmen at their sides, looked out across them and then back to Phy-Knight. “Sir, if I may, we are here to stay and to serve.” His voice was a tad elevated with the amped mood in the room.

The Andorian Captain had slipped into the meeting quietly and secretly, observing from a spot in the back among the equipment lockers where his presence wouldn’t be noticed. His antennae twitched softly as he listened and gauged the Security Crew’s response to Quinn’s words. What he saw and heard pleased him. These men and women clearly had the heart and the will. Quinn seemed a bit severe, but that would mellow over time. She clearly had her team well in hand, and he was proud of her hard work. Also, he sincerely hoped that they wouldn’t lose even one member of this department. Space was a dangerous place, but even one loss would weigh on him. These were his crew, and he was their Captain. Not a man they must serve, but a man that must serve and protect them. He made a note to remember what he saw here, and to use whatever means necessary to ensure what safety he could for these men and women of his Security Team.

Quinn’s eyes roved over the assembled crew, looking for any hint that one of their number might take her up on her offer; not one of them did. She then turned to face Ovik, who it seemed had taken it upon himself to speak for all of them. He’s got experience, more than me; if only when it comes to the star-fleet uniform. And that damn Vulcan logic can be so infuriating at times. While her outward expression did not change, she smiled internally. Guess you just landed the role of my little devil’s advocate, for now at any rate.
“Very good, Ensign,” she replied, her gaze giving the crew one last chance to make a claim to the contrary before she moved on.
“In fact, Ensign Ovik brings me to my next point.” Her piercing gaze then zeroed in on the man. “As you are all no doubt aware, Esign Ovik is a Vulcan. What does that mean?” she paused for a heartbeat. “To us, it means that he is probably top of the food chain when it comes to brute physical strength. And not because he does more bench presses or pull-ups a day than the rest of us, no. It is simply because he is a Vulcan. The cold hard facts of the matter are, People, that there are species out there that are inherently stronger, faster or smarter than any of us, including Mr Ovik.” She paused again before finishing, “And not all of them are nice.”
Quinn’s mind briefly travelled to the race known only to her as Klingons. The race she had heard so many whispers here and there about but had never actually encountered. She’d heard tale of their strength, their warlike nature and even of a supposed ‘warped’ sense of honour, at least according to the Orion smuggler she’d met in a bar once. And despite the fact that they may or may not have been responsible for her mother’s death, she found herself fascinated. Nevertheless, she cast the thought aside and returned to the matter at hand.
“Ensign Ovik, step forward. You’re going to help me demonstrate.”

The Vulcan’s eyes peeked over at the other crew when Quinn began talking about Vulcans. His head shifted noticeably when she called him to the front. He was strong, comparably as she described. But combat was not his forte - which was odd for a security officer. But he just did not relish in picking up a phaser. That said he certainly did enjoy close-quarter unarmed combat, studying several arts on Vulcan and Earth.
“Yes, sir,” he said and stepped up. He didn’t think she was testing herself or showing off, although many humans would consider it an honor to fell a Vulcan or Klingon or Romulan.
