Cerny pressed another switch, and the display switched to a star chart that showed the relative position of the colony to the rest of the Federation.

“They’re far enough out that it still takes weeks for reports to arrive via subspace radio,” Cerny observed, in order to helpfully verbalize details thus far only present in narration.

– Ivo Černý, XO/CSO

Amber nodded to the CO. “He’s right, sir.” She clicked off the long distance comms. “It’s ready for transmission once we are closer.” Then she frowned. “But if they were checking in at regular intervals and it’s taken this long to realize they aren’t responding…just “how” long have they been silent and unknown?” It seemed like a stupid question once it left her lips and she bit her bottom lip a moment.

Glancing to the CO and XO respectively, she apologized. “Sorry… I am sure someone took that into account.” She fell silent and went back to paying attention to her console.

“I wouldn’t assume that,” Cerny said quickly as a wave of cynicism passed over his face. “I mean, you saw the conversation on the Bridge, right?” It was the most neutrally worded way he could think of that alluded to the Commodore being a tedious narcissistic bore who wouldn’t actually have that thought, without actually saying those words.

“If the arrival of their message is three weeks late, it does stand to reason that something could have happened to them… uh… two months ago? But if it was something bad that would have screwed up shipping or something else right? I mean, these people make interplanetary exports of milk. Typical time to market for milk is two days because it goes bad pretty quickly, some other planet must would have noticed a lot sooner if there was a problem than our Fleet Command or whoever reads these subspace colony reports. But I dunno if…” the thought trailed off as another one popped up.

“Wait… if we’re supposed to go to the edge of known space to drop off supplies and pick up milk from this planet, and then bring it all the way back here… how do we keep it from spoiling?”

– Ivo Černý, XO/CSO

Preservation of the milk and wine was noted to be handled by small cryo boxes for storage.

Amber spoke up, albeit a bit sheepishly. “We have special cryo containers for it. Reports say it should be fine for the time it takes to move it.” She was glancing at the mission notes taken from earlier.

(speaking up the unspoken)

“Yeah, should have caught that one,” Ivo muttered in a self-deprecating fashion.

“Great…” Paul muttered and poured himself another coffee. “So now we’re glorified milk men.” He poured a second cup and arbitrarily handed it to the Security chief who happened to be closest.

CMO

Th’ellin snorted at Doc’s comment, still recovering from trying not to laugh at Cerny’s question about the Milk Spoiling. Nothing is ever simple, it seems… He thought to himself. Then he addressed the group again.

“So, we’ve got a Colony that could be out of contact for upwards of several weeks… That’s a variable I don’t like very much. Before we adjourn this meeting, I’ve got some instructions. Until we have harder evidence, we’ll continue as ordered, but I want to be prepared for anything funny.” Here, The Andorian looked at each of his staff as he addressed them.

“Mr. Myasnikov, I’m certain you’ve judiciously rung every parsec out of your course, but please go over it again. I’d like to get us where we’re going a bit faster if possible. Let Blackwolf know of any course corrections you make, and that I want to increase our speed at least until we’re in communications range of Deba.”

Aattami grinned and said “I can shave a few hours off, Captain… I think.”

“Excellent, thank you.” The Andorian’s antennae curled slightly as he tried not to chuckle at the way the kid called him “Keptin”.

“T’pria, please bring put us at Maximum Warp for the next eight hours, then drop us to cruising speed.”

“Mr. Cerny, if you’d be so kind as to see if you can give our long-range sensors a bit of extra reach, I’d be very grateful. If you can’t, then be prepared for a full sweep as soon as we’re within range to do so.”

Ivo nodded in acknowledgement.

“Ms. Phy-Knight, please have your weapons control teams prepped by the time of our arrival, just in case. I don’t foresee a need, but again, I don’t like Surprises. Also, choose me a few of your boys for a landing party once we’re closer to Deba.”

“Doc, I sincerely hope we won’t be needing your services, but I suggest you prepare for at least a medical Survey if the need arises.”

“Ms. Josen, I’ll need you back at your station, I want to know if any signals come through from Deba, it could be they’re just late and we’ll be hearing from them at any time…”

-Zarath, CO

For the first time since she had entered the room, the Vulcan engineering chief locked eyes with her new commanding officer. Andorian. It was completely illogical to construct presumptions on the character of an individual she had not yet interacted with personally purely from cultural beliefs about his race. And yet, at the sight of his blue-tinged skin and waving cranial antennae, a brief curling of her lip could not entirely be avoided, as if she had just caught a nostril full of their impending spoiled-milk cargo.
Pushing back her chair as if preparing to leave the room, she replied, “Since my duties here do not in any way encompass driving this ship, I shall be sure to pass those instructions on to the helm officer, Sir. For my part, I will ensure that warp and impulse drive are both operating at optimal efficiency and will channel power to and from the various systems as appropriate.”

  • Lt T’Pria (CE)

Oh, great… Ivo thought. We’re going to split hairs now on how “put us to maximum warp” should have been phrased as “prioritize channeling power to warp drive over all other ship systems to provide maximum velocity instead of optimal efficiency.”

– Ivo Černý, XO/CSO

OCC: Feel free to continue conversing but I think we can wrap this up soon yeah? would like to get you all to the planet ASAP!

GM CockRoach

Myasnikov, Navigator

“Noted, Ms… T’pria. I simply meant to offer you the professional courtesy of addressing the one who’s actually in charge of my lovely Warp Enginers. No need to… get emotional about it. Meeting dismissed.” The Andorian smiled wryly, and made his way to the door. Perhaps only Cerny would catch the way his antennae curled angrily, given they’d served together for a long while.

-Zarath, CO.

Ivo managed to suppress a smirk. Troll, he thought. He was amused, but in actuality, it was not funny. There was potential conflict there that he would possibly have to smooth over between the T’Pria and the Captain.

As the meeting adjourned Paul cleared his throat and stood so that he would be heard over the shifts of chairs and people walking and talking. “Can I just add that if anyone wants to actually go visit the dairy farm or whatever it is and play milkman they’ll need medical clearance. Most of the junior officers have reported in already, I’d say thank their Ingi pal training since none of you decided to grace me with your presence as the top brass as it were, so I guess we can rule out modelling behaviour as the reason for that.”

He crossed his arms. “I’ll clear my schedule so we can fit everyone in during the next 8 hours shall I?”

Grump

Amber rose at the dismissal and headed back to the bridge. She was glad she wasn’t part of the away mission. She wasn’t fond of doctors in general, or rather what seeing them meant. And since they had all just been cleared for duty, the last thing she wanted was another round of pokes and hypos just to walk around on a planet to get supplies. She smiled and nodded responded to the occasional ‘see you later’ she exchanged on her way out.

“Yeah Doctor, if you could manage the queue with more efficiency, that would be very helpful,” Černý said. It was casual enough, but clearly was intended to counter the grump routine. “We don’t all have time to wait in line down the Sickbay corridor.”

– Ivo Černý, XO/CSO

As he stepped out the door, Th’elin looked over his shoulder and caught the look on Cerny’s face. Suppressing an eye-roll at the thought of admitting his need for an attitude adjustment, he considered making it up to Ivo by trying to be a better Captain. His voice rang out as he paused in the doorway.

“Doctor, you can pencil me in for your first opening in the morning. Maybe we can keep your waiting room clear by leading by example.”

Then he was gone, ducking into the turbo-lift.
