USS Sentinel

Main Sim – Survival of the Fittest - (Science)

Snip

The sudden stabilization of the sensor picture brought Lieutenant Selene Kross’s attention fully back to the science console. For several tense moments, the battlefield had been little more than a shifting collection of sensor ghosts and conflicting returns, but now the Federation vessels were resolving with sufficient clarity to distinguish individual hulls and, more importantly, the escape pods being launched from the crippled Pontiac. Kross studied the data as Stovik’s transmission reached her, her expression tightening as the casualty figures came through. One hundred and seventy-four survivors was a number, but given the scale of the engagement, it was a number that carried considerably more weight than the simplicity of the figure suggested.

“Understood, Stovik,” Kross replied over the channel, her voice controlled despite the continuing impacts against the Sentinel’s shields. “Keep those sensor locks stable and continue searching for anything that doesn’t correspond with a functioning transponder. I want the science teams cross-checking the life-sign returns against the debris field itself. If a pod has lost its beacon, there may still be a biological return we can identify. Don’t assume that an absence of a transponder means an absence of survivors.” She glanced toward the tactical and operations displays as the latest information populated the science console. “Transmit every verified coordinate to Transporter Control as soon as you have it. Medical will need accurate numbers, and they need them before those survivors arrive aboard.”

Kross closed the channel and returned her attention to the sensor display, refusing to let the apparent clarity of the battlefield create a false sense of security. The anomaly that had obscured their sensors had vanished, but that did not mean every unanswered question had disappeared with it. The surviving Federation vessels were still operating amid a debris field that represented an enormous loss of life, and the Pontiac’s evacuation was still underway. “Keep scanning,” she ordered the science department, her eyes remaining fixed on the data. “Wide spectrum, continuous sweep. We are not finished looking until we know exactly what is out there.”

Stovik acknowledged Lieutenant Kross’s orders with a slight inclination of his head before reopening the channel.

=^= Understood, Lieutenant. Science will maintain continuous wide-spectrum sweeps and cross-reference biological returns against debris concentrations, damaged escape pods, and nonfunctioning transponders. Verified survivor coordinates will be transmitted immediately to Transporter Control. =^=

He closed the channel and turned toward the assembled science personnel.

“Divide the sensor workload. Maintain primary tracking on active escape pod beacons, but assign secondary teams to examine debris concentrations for isolated biological signatures. Cross-reference every return against known Federation physiology and environmental conditions to reduce false positives.”

Stovik moved to the central console, bringing the expanding casualty grid onto the main display.

“Any confirmed life sign without an operational transponder is to receive immediate priority. Transmit verified coordinates directly to Transporter Control and update the casualty count simultaneously. Continue until the entire debris field has been systematically examined.”

His fingers returned to the controls as another sweep began. “Proceed.”

Transporter Room 3 opened comms with both Medical and Science to coordinate. [O]”This is Specialist Largas. The Transporter Rooms on Decks 3 and 10 are standing by to start beaming up survivors from the pods. Do you want them brought to the transporter rooms first, or do you want them directly in Sickbay?”[C]

Gamemaster Mal Fet

Stovik could hear the CMOs reply via the channel
=^= I want them directly in the lounge where we’ve set up triage. I’m sending you the new layout now. From here we will bring the serious cases to sickbay. Please coordinate with nurse Molly, she will tell you which beds become free and when we are reaching capacity. =^=
Dr Anu

With the immediate threat gone, the Science team started parsing the data from the lifepods.

“Mr. Stovik, along the course we’ve been provided, there are 103 life signs correlated with Federation distress beacons,” one of the Ensigns spoke up. “The life signs in most of them appear to be stable, but there are a few that appear to be in distress. I’m sending you the data now.”

That accounted for 103 of the 174 life signs. The other 71 must be in the direction of the Pontiac.

A map of 103 individual pods appeared on the Vulcan scientist’s display. Most were colored green, indicating that the individuals were fine. Thirteen were flagged as yellow and one orange, indicating some sort of injury or emergency within the pod.

“Sir,” a different Ensign spoke. “With the immediate threat gone, do you still want us to evaluate every individual Klingon contact? We can finish the process using the sensor logs.”

Gamemaster Mal Fet

Stovik studied the newly transmitted pod data as the 103 confirmed escape craft populated the science display. The distribution was immediately clear: eighty-nine occupants appeared stable, thirteen were displaying indications of distress, and one had been assigned a more serious priority status.

He opened the shared channel to Transporter Room 3 and Medical.

=^= Specialist Largas, Stovik. Medical has designated the lounge triage area as the primary transport destination. Science will provide transporter priority based upon current life-sign telemetry. One occupant is presently classified orange and thirteen yellow. Transport the orange casualty first, followed by the yellow-designated survivors as transporter capacity permits. Remaining survivors may then be recovered systematically. Continue coordinating available capacity with Nurse Molly. =^=

Stovik transmitted the updated coordinates and medical priority designations directly to the transporter rooms, then turned his attention toward the Science staff.
“Maintain continuous biological scans of all 103 identified survivors. Any deterioration in life signs is to be immediately reflected in the transporter priority queue. Simultaneously begin locating and classifying the remaining seventy-one Federation life signs believed to be associated with the Pontiac. Rescue operations now take precedence over post-battle analysis.”

His gaze shifted toward the Ensign who had asked about the Klingon contacts. “The Klingon sensor records remain scientifically and tactically relevant, but their analysis is no longer an immediate priority. Preserve all sensor logs and assign available computer processing to cataloguing the contacts. Detailed evaluation will resume once survivor recovery is complete.”

Stovik returned his attention to the casualty display as the first transporter coordinates were transferred. “Continue scanning. We will account for every surviving life sign.”

Specialist Largas responded quickly. [O]”Understood, sir. We’ll jump on that as soon as we’re done transporting the wounded Marines from the Declaration.” [C]

Gamemaster Mal Fet

Stovik acknowledged Specialist Largas’ response without interrupting the work already underway across the Science Department.

[O] Understood, Specialist. Science will maintain the recovery queue until Transporter Room 3 is available. Stovik out. [C]

He turned back toward the Science staff. The immediate task remained coordinating the rescue effort while ensuring that Transporter and Medical received information as efficiently as possible.

“Continue continuous monitoring of all previously identified survivors. Maintain the transporter priority queue and immediately forward any necessary changes to Medical and the transporter rooms.”

Stovik moved to the adjoining station and brought the broader rescue operation onto the display.

“Continue attempting to identify and correlate the remaining Federation personnel with escape craft, distress beacons, and evacuation records. Do not disregard an uncertain contact solely because its beacon is absent or damaged.”

He glanced across the laboratory.

“Assign available personnel to maintaining the rescue database and verifying transporter coordinates before transmission. Preserve all post-battle sensor records for subsequent analysis, but survivor recovery remains our primary responsibility.”

Stovik returned his attention to his console.

“Continue your work. We will provide Transporter and Medical with whatever information they require as it becomes available.” After reiterating the orders Stovik turned back to his own scans.
