The bosun’s whistle echoed through the ship. [O]Attention all hands to battle stations. Emergency distress call has been received from the USS Declaration. She is under attack by several Klingon Vessels.[C] Closing the comms, Rende hit another button on her chair that put the ship to red alert.

A moment later, a message came in with orders from the Science station on the bridge. ‘Science is ordered to have sensors checked and refined to attempt to identify areas of cloaked ships and to begin scanning for life signs and casualties as soon as we drop out of warp.’

Cpt. Asam, CO

OOC: Please ignore my request for how to detect cloaked ships. At this point in time, the Klingon’s did not have cloaking technology. That was my mistake for not checking. Please disregard.
Cpt. Asam, CO

” On it, Captain!”

=/\= Kross to Stovik: Triple-check the sensors and check and have them refined to identify Cloaked ships and begin life-sign and casualties scan as soon as were outta warp. Over. =/\=

The tone was quiet down in the Science laboratories. They were no less busy than the rest of the ship, but many of NEs and scientists were subdued. Shaken even.

One of their own had died.

Ensign Faorr, a young Tellarite woman, had died during the hull breach. She had been thrown off her feet and smashed her head into the bulkhead. The team rushed her to sickbay as quickly as they could, but the doctors were unable to save her.

There was also Ensign Mendez, stuck in the chemical lab as a fire raged in that compartment. He was in Sickbay right now being treated for extensive burns. He was sedated, but still in critical condition.

Due to the quick thinking of the department, the Xenobiology lab and most of the other compartments had been secured and sealed when the ship-wide system failures first started. Since then, the scientists had been diligently working to undo all those safeguards and prepare the labs to resume normal operations.

The damage control teams had just finished up their overhaul of the chemical lab, making sure the area was safe. That opened up the computer lab for assessment as well. The fire hadn’t reached that space, but there were no personnel inside to secure it. Science Department personnel would need to assess the extent of the damage there to see what could be done.

The bosun’s whistle and the transition to red alert brought no visible change to Specialist Stovik’s demeanor. Around him, the science laboratories moved with disciplined efficiency despite the lingering weight of recent events. The loss of Ensign Faorr and the injuries suffered by Ensign Mendez remained evident in the subdued expressions of the department’s personnel. Grief was acknowledged. Duty, however, remained.

His combadge chirped. =^= Kross to Stovik: Triple-check the sensors and begin life-sign and casualty scanning as soon as we’re out of warp. Over. =^=

Stovik tapped his combadge. =^= Specialist Stovik acknowledges, Lieutenant. Science will complete sensor verification immediately and prepare long-range life-sign and casualty scanning protocols for execution upon arrival. =^=

He turned toward the main laboratory operations console. “The Chief Science Officer’s orders are clear. Verification of all sensor calibration routines is now the department’s primary priority.”

His fingers moved across the LCARS interface, bringing every scientific sensor subsystem onto the central display. Long-range sensor harmonics, subspace resolution, gravimetric discrimination, electromagnetic filtering, and biofilter sensitivity scrolled rapidly across the screen as automated diagnostic routines were initiated.

“Commence independent verification of each calibration cycle. Confirm all sensor arrays are operating within design tolerances. Any deviation, regardless of magnitude, is to be reported immediately.”

Several scientists acknowledged and dispersed to their assigned workstations.

Stovik paused briefly, regarding the laboratory staff.
“The events of the previous hours have imposed measurable emotional strain upon this department.”
His voice remained calm and even.

“We honor Ensign Faorr most effectively not through inactivity, but through competent execution of our responsibilities. Logic dictates that our continued service contributes directly to the survival of this vessel and those we may yet rescue.” A number of heads slowly lifted.

“Our colleagues entrusted this department with scientific excellence. We shall demonstrate that their confidence was justified.”

Without further ceremony, the subdued atmosphere gave way to renewed purpose as the laboratory personnel returned to their stations with greater focus.

Stovik turned toward one of the civilian research specialists. “Specialist Franks.”

“Yes, sir?”

“The damage control teams have declared the computer laboratory structurally safe. Assemble an assessment team of two personnel equipped with environmental scanners. Conduct a complete survey of the compartment. Determine the operational status of the computer cores, laboratory workstations, power distribution, and data storage systems. Report all findings before any restoration efforts are initiated.”

Franks nodded once. “Understood. We’ll begin immediately.” The pair collected tricorders and environmental monitors before departing toward the computer laboratory.

Returning his attention to the primary console, Stovik continued supervising the sensor diagnostics, directing additional calibration to maximize resolution and reduce background interference from warp field residuals and the expected debris of battle.

When the USS Sentinel emerged from warp, the Science Department would be prepared to provide the bridge with the clearest possible picture of the battlefield and locate survivors requiring immediate assistance.
