On boarding the Sentinel, Jova made his way to Deck 9. A recent graduate of the Academy, he remembered the advice that his sister, The COS of the USS Mandala, gave him, don’t make security escort you for your medical … go willingly.Taking that advice on board, Jova went straight to sickbay and waited to be seen.
No aches and pains, so the environmental controls on the Sentinel were working properly, it would appear. No sneezing, so the filtration system was working as well. At this rate, would there be anything for him to do? If not, there was always time for two up.

“Mount up and Make it Sing”A motherly figure in medical blue with Lt. stripes on her sleeves smiled as he came in. “Hello Ensign. I’m Nurse Shrine, what can medical do for you today?”

“Hello Nurse Shrine,” he replied, smiling back, “I’m Ensign Kiwa, newly graduated from the Academy, and assigned to the Sentinel’s Engineering Department. I’m here for my boarding physical before I report in to Main Engineering. I can come back at a later time if now isn’t the best time.”
He realised he probably sounded like a blathering fool … looking at his hands he realised they were shaking ever so slightly … a nervous blathering fool. He’d been through medical appointments before, the physical to get into the academy, the annual physicals there, the sports-playing ending injury he suffered in AFL at age 17, without these feelings, so why this time?

“Mount up and Make it Sing”“Oh don’t be silly, ensign. Right this way.” Shrine led him over to a biobed, “just hop up and lay back. I’ll get the bed to start taking your vitals while I go get the doctor, alright?”
Cpt. Asam, CO
“Thank you, Nurse Shrine,” Jova got up on the biobed and lay back as he waited for the doctor to see to him.

Jova shifted slightly on the firm, temperature-controlled surface of the biobed, settling in to wait. He didn’t mind the downtime; after the rush of boarding, finding his quarters and getting his gear stowed, a few quiet minutes were a rare luxury, a luxury his sister, Lira, told him to appreciate and take advantage of to rest.
With nothing else to do, he found himself staring straight up at the ceiling. Directly above him was the overhead bio-sensor cluster, a large, sleek oval protuding slightly from the bulkhed. It pulsed with a soft, shifting sequence of amber and cool blue lights as it quietly mapped his vitals. Being an engineer, Jova’s eyes traced the seamless joinery of the pale grey acoustic panels surrounding the array, noting the clean integration of the recessed lighting strips. The workmanship was pristine.
He took a slow breath. The air in Sickbay was distinctly different from the rest of the ship. As an environmental controls specialist, he immediately notices the heavy scrubbing, it smelled intensely of sharp antiseptic and a faint, crisp hint of ozone from the sterilisation fields. It was also kept a few degrees cooler than the corridors. Jova felt a faint, familiar twinge in his left knee as the cool air settled over him. It prompted him to stretch his leg straight out to keep the joint from stifffening up.
Closing his eyes for a moment, Jova tuned out the rhythmic, high-pitched chirp…chirp…chirp of his own heart monitor. Beneath the sounds of the medical ward; the murmur of staff and the pneumatic hiss of the doors; he could just make out the steady, resonant thrum of the ship’s EPS grid running through the deck plates. It was a good sound. The ship was humming along perfectly.
Opening his eyes again, Jova kept his gaze fixed on the pulsing amber lights of the sensor array above him, patiently waiting for the Doctor to clear him for duty. He began to hum, it was the Pirate King song from the Pirates of Penzance. He did, after all, play the Pirate King back when he was in school.
