The soft hum of the USS Sentinel’s warp engines provided a familiar background rhythm throughout Deck 9 as Lieutenant Selene Kross stepped into the crew lounge. After a long day in the science labs reviewing sensor data and analyzing stellar phenomena, the Chief Science Officer had decided that a proper meal away from her console was overdue.
The lounge was moderately occupied, with crew members from various departments enjoying their evening downtime. Kross selected a quiet table near the viewport, offering a view of the stars slipping past the ship.
A few moments later, her dinner arrived.
A perfectly prepared medium-rare steak rested on the plate, its surface seared with precision. Beside it sat a baked potato topped with fresh garnishes, along with grilled asparagus sautéed in butter and wrapped in bacon—a small indulgence after a demanding day. For dessert, a generous slice of strawberry cheesecake completed the meal, accompanied by a cup of hot tea.
Kross took a moment to appreciate the presentation before cutting into the steak.
“Replicator technology may have eliminated the need for traditional preparation,” she quietly remarked to herself, “but it has not eliminated the importance of taking time to enjoy the result.”
She took a sip of tea, allowing the warmth to settle as she reviewed the day’s events in her mind. The science department had made progress, but several unanswered questions remained regarding their latest sensor readings. She made a mental note to review the data again in the morning—with fresh eyes.
For now, however, she allowed herself a rare moment away from duty.
