Something had been wrong. Well, not wrong per say, but there was something on the edge of her awareness that felt… off. Having no psi abilities, as best Leah could understand it, it was intuition.

As the investigation wrapped up and Daro was arrested (the evidence became overwhelming that he had targeted Leah and his actions amounted to assault), Leah was left in the interim trying to figure out how best to move forward.

Intuition was a funny thing, and by the time she realized that something was happening with her, it became a thing she had to face.

She was pregnant. The sleepiness, the moodiness. All of it could have been related to the trauma she was working through. But the scan results did not lie.

What to do now? That was a hard question. She had lots of options and in the end, Leah needed space to figure things out. She took a leave of absence and continued with the pregnancy, planning to give the baby up for adoption. She wasn’t ready to be a mother.

But then something interesting happened. Her sister (who had been trying to have a baby) was infertile, and when Leah confided to her about her situation and Daro’s role in it, Anabel and her husband offered to adopt the baby herself. An open adoption where Leah could be as involved or not as she wanted. She could be Auntie Leah. In many ways it solved a lot of problems, and gave her the ability to heal the wounds that had been created.

Months later, born at 40 weeks, 3 days, Rosalía Mercedes Mahoney was born and Leah happily passed her into the arms of her adoptive mother, whom Leah had had plenty of time to work through the many issues in their rather complicated family.

Leah was grateful that Anabel and her had come to a better place where her sister finally saw and understood some of her own behaviours. Leah was never going to be close to her mother, but she had enforced boundaries that (while difficult) had her in a much better place. She didn’t know what the future held for her, but Leah was ready for the adventure.
