USS Sentinel
Mess hall
Lieutenant Selene Kross
Chief Science Officer
USS Sentinel
The evening shift had settled into its familiar rhythm aboard the USS Sentinel. The ship’s mess hall was quieter than it had been during the midday rush, with only scattered conversations drifting through the room as officers and crew enjoyed a well-earned meal between duty rotations.
Lieutenant Selene Kross sat alone at a corner table, a steaming plate of grilled salmon, roasted vegetables, and wild rice before her. Beside it rested a mug of black coffee and her ever-present PADD, its display filled with the day’s science department reports.
Between bites of dinner, Kross carefully reviewed sensor calibration logs from the Sentinel’s long-range sensor array. A minor fluctuation in one of the subspace sensor pallets had caught her attention. While well within operational tolerances, it was enough for her to flag the issue for a diagnostic during Gamma Shift. Experience had taught her that small anomalies, if ignored, often became larger problems at the worst possible time.
She moved on to the stellar cartography team’s latest survey results, quietly impressed with the quality of their work. Their updated star charts had identified several previously undocumented gravimetric distortions near the sector boundary, information that could prove valuable to Starfleet vessels operating in the region.
Making a few notes on her PADD, Kross transmitted recommendations to her department heads before opening the final report of the evening—a summary of ongoing research projects throughout the science division. Progress remained steady across every laboratory aboard the Sentinel, something that brought a faint smile to her face.
Taking another sip of coffee, she leaned back slightly and allowed herself a brief moment to enjoy the calm. Science was often associated with discovery and excitement, but she knew the foundation of every breakthrough was discipline, preparation, and attention to detail.
Within a few minutes, her dinner was finished and the last report had been signed. Rising from the table, she tucked the PADD under her arm, returned her tray to the recycler, and headed toward the nearest turbolift.
There was still plenty of work to be done before the end of Alpha Shift, and Lieutenant Selene Kross intended to ensure the USS Sentinel’s science department remained ready for whatever awaited them among the stars.
