Alpha shift was winding down, and Beta shift was due to step in.Monitors thrummed with their steady cadence, the dimmed lights reflecting off polished biopanels. A handful of orderlies moved about in quiet routine, wrapping up the day’s final reports and readying equipment for the next rotation.
At the far side of the ward, Lieutenant (j.g.) Dovek, the communications officer, remained under sedation. His vitals showed stable but carefully managed readings; the suppressants kept his body from consuming itself after the terrifying and insatiable hunger that had overtaken him earlier. Nutrient drips and automated monitors maintained a precarious balance, preventing a relapse while the medical team worked on longer-term stabilization.
Leah was sat on a stool at Dovek’s bedside, watching the monitors, yes, but also casting out a calm feeling his way. She was no empath but she could channel a sense of calm and knew if she felt it clearly, then those around her could also feel it, even if they weren’t aware of it. It was that whole ‘chaos was contagious’ mentality.
The wall chrono ticked past the scheduled shift change. Then five minutes. Then ten.
NE Lieutenant (j.g.) Sovak, the Vulcan physician assigned as attending doctor for Beta shift, had not arrived. His communicator remained silent despite repeated hails from the duty nurse, and Sickbay’s roster flagged him as missing from his post.
Staff exchanged uneasy looks. Sovak was Vulcan, and Vulcans were never late.
A soft alert chimed at the nurse’s station: No acknowledgement from Dr. Sovak. Duty transition pending.
The sterile calm of Sickbay lingered, broken only by the quiet hiss of Dovek’s respirator and the insistent tick of the chrono, waiting for someone to act.
-OZ
Leah moved over to the wall and activated the communicator. [O]Sickbay to Dr. Sovak.[o] While concerned, she was far too trained and experienced to panic over small anomalies.
~Leah Hart, NP
There was no response.
-OZ
Her face shifted into a frown. [o]Dr. Soval, respond immediately please.[o] She cast her gaze over Sickbay, maintaining her authoritative gaze. She might be ‘just a nurse’, but everyone knew very well now that Leah ran the show under Kreed, and that even the doctors needed to listen to her. Those that didn’t tended to be confronted with a lesson in cooperation. Fortunately, none had pushed her far enough to summon her spicy temper.
~Leah Hart, NP
Again there was no response, but if Leah happened to be looking in the direction of one of monitors she would see it ripple and blink with a static pulse, twice, in quick succession.
-OZ
It flashed out of the corner of her eye and Leah moved over to the monitor, thinking it must have been just the screen catching light from something else in Sickbay. Though that didn’t quite match what she had seen. Drawing right up to it, she examined it closely.
“Leah? What’s up?” Nurse Montri asked.
“The monitor… did something. Could be a malfunction, but I wanted to see if it happened again.”
~Leah Hart, NP
A few minutes later, it did. Twice.
-OZ
Leah’s frown deepened and moved over to the comm access. [O]Sickbay to Engineering. We’re having some sort of odd malfunction with one of our monitors.[o]
~Leah Hart, NP
[O]Asam to sickbay. We need Dovek up here right now.[C] Her tone left no room for argument.
Cpt. Asam, CO
Hart frowned and returned the comm. [O]Captain, Hart here. We can technically do that and it’s your call, but I can’t guarantee the affect on Lieutenant Dovek. Or everyone else around him, since we don’t know what’s causing the issue. But I can give him a suppressant and hope it works.[o]
~Leah Hart, NP
[O] Get him awake and get him up here, Lt.[C] It wasn’t like the captain to be so short.
Cpt. Asam, CO
Hart blew out a breath and managed to hide the wince at the captain’s tone.
Moving over to Zaril’s beside, she grabbed a stimulant that would wake him up. Well, here went nothing. She injected the medication and rested a hand on his shoulder so he’d know she was there before he even opened his eyes. She hoped he’d be in a better state now.
~Leah Hart, NP
Zaril surfaced slowly, he was groggy and his senses felt different. “Nurse, what’s happening?” he asked trying to force his eyes open. He could feel her hand on him, which helped ground him, but something was wrong he could not feel her.
Lieutenant Junior Grade Zaril Dovek
Communication Officer U.S.S Sentinel“Hey,” Leah said. “Breathe evenly and give yourself a minute.” Despite the captain’s orders, so was going to make sure he was functional before she sent him up to the bridge.
“We’ve had to give you a suppressant because you were projecting so strongly. But it seems to be an external thing we haven’t quite figured out. I’m sorry we had to do that. But hopefully we can figure it out soon and we can stop the suppressant. For now though, as soon as you are able, the capstan has ordered you to the bridge.”
~Leah Hart, NP
He looked at Leah, the only thing in the room that was able to ground him now that he was on suppressants. He looked sad and worried. Sitting up slowly he tried to compose him self letting his feet dangle off the ground. “How long” he askedLieutenant Junior Grade Zaril Dovek
Communication Officer U.S.S SentinelShe moved her hand off his shoulder as he got up, though stayed close in case he was at all wobbly. “Five days,” Hart said softly.
“Hey, Zaril, I promise we won’t keep you on the suppressant any longer than we have to. And I’m sorry it’s necessary. We also don’t know what was affecting you, and if it will happen again.” She placed her hand on the biobed, palm up, exuding a calm confidence. “but you know me well enough to know I don’t backdown easily. We’ll figure it out.”
~Leah Hart, NP
He placed a hand on hers, he needed a connection something to keep him grounded he felt lost without the emotional patterns around him, it felt almost like he was in a sensory deprivation field. “Thank you Le.. Nurse” he said trying to stand. His knees gave out and he started to stumble.
Lieutenant Junior Grade Zaril Dovek
Communication Officer U.S.S SentinelShe caught him easily, and despite her petite frame, he could feel how muscular she actually was. “Hey now, easy. Your body is adjusting and while we’ve been keeping your nutrient levels stable, it’s going to feel off.” She was irritated that she had to send him up t the bridge like this but orders were orders. “I can’t keep you here- they need you up there- but you’re not going until you are steady. But, if you’re okay with it, I can go up with you?”
~Leah Hart, NP
The suppressant seemed to be working for now. And while still a bit hungry, the sensation wasn’t as pronounced as it had been before. Dovek, though a bit groggy, could easily manage after a few minutes.
-OZ
“Please, i would feel better if you were with me until I’m a little more sure on my feet” he said . “I’m a little hungry as well” he noted Using her to steady himself.
Lieutenant Junior Grade Zaril Dovek
Communication Officer U.S.S SentinelThe monitors pulsed twice in quick succession — a faint flicker, perfectly in time with the static pulses reported from the bridge. The displays steadied again, but the coincidence was hard to miss.
Behind the still-glowing panels, Sickbay felt quieter than it should have for a shift change.
By now, beta shift should have been fully in place. Yet the attending post remained conspicuously empty.
Dr. Sovak’s name still blinked at the duty roster near the entrance, but his station was vacant. Ten minutes late had become thirty. Communications had been tried, and still there was no reply.
With Dovek only just pulled back to awareness and Sovak still absent, Leah and the skeleton staff on hand were all that stood between Sickbay and being completely unattended.
-OZ
Leah surveyed the situation and stifled a grumble. She was only one person! “Okay, let’s go, but let me gather some stuff.”
She grabbed a med kit and pointed to Nurse Montri. “Keep an eye on those power fluctations. As soon as we hear from Engineering, let them know it’s happening again. I’m headed to the bridge, so I will ask Security to check on Doctor Sovak, but if someone else gets to it first, let me know. And by all that’s holy, someone find Kreed! And call Doctor Hunter- she’s on-call today,” she said, holding Zaril up by the arm and supporting him as she led him to the exit.
Kham watched Leah with a moment’s concern, but she had her orders and they made sense. “[O]Sickbay to Doctor Kreed. Sir, we need you down here ASAP.[o]
She also had the computer page Doctor Sylvia Hunter.
~Leah Hart, NP
[O] On my way. [C] came the clipped voice of the CMO.
Kreed rose out of bed and got dressed. As he did, he tapped his comm station. [O] Kreed to Dr. Sovak. What is the issue. [C] He waited for a few moments and, when he didn’t get a response, he left his quarters and headed to Sickbay.
As the door slid open, Kreed looked around. Dovek was not on his bio bed and Dr. So all was nowhere to be seen. The Saurian was still for a moment and then the large black eyes flicked to the Charge Nurse. “Ensign Breathwaite. Report, please.”
Kreed, CMO
OOC: I’m not sure who is playing Breathwaite....but I’m going to just input the information in here for Kreed.
The nurse turned to Kreed, “Captain Asam ordered Dovek to the bridge. Lt. Hart went with him. We can’t find Sovak. He didn’t show up for his shift. He’s not responding. We having some kind of malfunction in this monitor here. We’ve informed Engineering.”
Five minutes later the door to sickbay opened and Captain Asam entered, escorted by the chief of security, Lt. Anders. Rende stopped and scanned sickbay. Her eyes landed on Kreed. “Lt. Kreed.” Her voice sounded with a crispness reminiscent of a drill sergeant and an edge of something else. Kreed’s unique vision would show her heart was racing and her breathing was accelerated and deepened as well. Her body temperature flashed hot and cold - fight or flight response. Her hands fisted and relaxed with effort at her sides, and she stood and watched as if expecting an attack.
The other thing he would notice was how she was standing outside of arms reach of anyone. Anyone who came too close, she shifted away from them. When she had his attention. “I am… compromised. Cmdr. Alden is in command.”
Cpt. Asam, CO
Kreed looked at her in silence for several seconds, registering what his vision told him. Finally he nodded and then looked at Anders. “I accept the Captain in medical custody and will put a medical lock on her computer access. Our shift physician Dr. So ak is not responding to comms and did not show up for his shift. I would like to request a security team check on him.” The large black eyes shifted to Asam. “Captain, this way please.” and gestured towards the back of sickbay. He let her stay at an arms length, but walked her back to a single biobed.
Once she was laying down, Kreed erected a privacy screen and then looked at the Captain. “Compromised how?”
Kreed, CMO
Rende followed him back and sat on the biobed. She laid back, but after a moment she sat up and shook her head. “I can’t.” She knew she needed to for the biobed to do its work, but she felt… vulnerable, weak, just lying there on the biobed. It was a sensation she was unfamiliar with and it only seemed to heighten that uneasy hunted feeling that wouldn’t stop.
“I’m not sure,” Rende said. “I… I am not myself Kreed. I just tried to have my yeoman thrown in the brig for mutiny. I pulled a weapon the the bridge crew.” Rende was concerned over her actions and regretful, but she didn’t back down from it. Her fists came up to cover her ears as the notes got louder and more painful for a moment. “I keep hearing music, my empathy, but even when it’s silent. It’s discordent and off key. The tone is painful and overwhelming. I shouldn’t hear it when no one is talking.”
Cpt. Asam, CO
Bump
The comms chirpped and Rende and Kreed heard Rand’s voice come over the comms, [O] Bridge to sickbay. Chief Johansson is reporting possible auditory and visual hallucinations down in main engineering. Requesting medical assistance.[C]
Kreed reached over to the comms terminal on the wall and activated it. [O] Understood. I will send a Response Team immediately. Kreed out. [C] came the flat response from the CMO.
[O] Hart to Kreed. I’m on the bridge and heard the request. I’m on my way to Engineering since I’m not needed up here. [o]
Rende cursed abundantly and sat up. “My crew and ship are falling apart. We will have to discuss this later, Dr.”
Cpt. Asam, CO
Kreed stepped in front of her and said ” No, we will not. As of twenty seconds ago, you are in Medical custody. You have no computer access, no authority. Captain, you can’t even walk out of this Sickbay. The doors won’t open. You know this. Now you have a choice. You can force your way past me, which I have no doubt you can do. You can hurt yourself and most likely others in a vain attempt to do anything outside of this Sickbay. Or, and what I strongly recommend, you can lay down and let me do my job so I can help you get back to work. The choice, however, is entirely yours.” He stepped back and slid his three-taloned hands into the pockets of his doctor’s coat. “But please keep in mind that you are no good to anyone in your current state. The rescuers have to ensure their own safety before they can rescue anyone else.”
Kreed, CMO
For one very disturbing, very long moment, it looked like the captain might actually gut him and roast him for dinner over a fire. Her fists clenched, her stance widened, lowered, shifted. Too old eyes took in every strength, every weakness, and made a plan.
The music was unbearable, discordant, painful, it came from everywhere and nowhere and never stopped. Never, even at her most reckless, egotistical, and wild she had never been out of control. She was now and it frightened her. It was a completely unfamiliar emotion to her. One breath, two, and then a third. She nodded once, only slightly. She sat back on the biobed forcing her body to relax and to focus, but it didn’t really work. She was wound tight with instinct to fight at all costs. Everyone in the room was a threat and needed to be eliminated. That wasn’t right, and she knew it, she just couldn’t convince herself of that. “Hurry Doctor, before I hurt someone.”
Cpt. Asam, CO
Kreed didn’t speak, he just moved to the bed and began a thorough scan; focusing most efforts on her brain.
Kreed, CMO
At first, everything looked textbook: cortical patterns, neural rhythms, synaptic activity. Then the deeper scans began to resolve — and the lines of data began to bend.
Scan Results:
Cortical Hyperactivity: Neural energy patterns in Asam’s prefrontal and temporal lobes were amplified—not merely overactive but fluctuating in rhythmic intervals, approximately every 4.7 seconds.
Auditory Cortex Anomalies: Continuous stimulation of the auditory processing centers, without external input. The brain behaves as though it’s hearing something real—but nothing is being transmitted through her sensory pathways.
Subspace Residuals: Low-level subspace harmonic resonance detected in the hypothalamus and limbic system—frequencies identical to those that caused Zaril Dovek’s metabolic surge five days earlier.
Empathic Feedback Spike: Neural telemetry suggests two overlapping emotional signatures: her own and a second pattern piggybacking through the empathic centers. It’s not Vulcan, Deltan, or Aenar—it’s non-humanoid, with oscillations beyond standard telepathic frequency.
Systemic Response: Elevated adrenaline, tachycardia, temperature instability — her autonomic system is reacting as if under psychic assault.
As the tricorder pings completed, the readout’s last few lines flickered — twice, in perfect rhythm with the Sickbay monitor’s earlier pulse.
A faint tone echoed from the biobed, though Kreed hadn’t triggered anything. The privacy field shimmered — as though momentarily brushed by static.
Cpt. Asam, CO
~Leah Hart, NP
He looked at Asam and said “Captain, you are being overwhelmed by psychic energy. Unless you have specific training to block such an effort, you will need to be sedated.” He looked at the nurse and said “Prepare twenty-five m-l’s of Propoven.” Kreed said definitively. He looked at Asam. ” If you can block it out, now would be the time, Captain.”
Kreed, CMO
Rende glared at him, “If I was able to block it, I would have days ago, Doctor,” she spat out and then grimaced. “Apologies.” The noise was horrible, it never stopped and felt like nails on a chalkboard. Not that anyone here would understand the phrase.
Cpt. Asam, CO
Kreed didn’t flinch, or even really react. He simply dialed in the dosage- accounting for her unique physiology and tolerances- and then looked at her. “As you didn’t know you were under attack until just recently, I doubt that very much, Captain.” and he pressed the hypospray to her neck and administered the powerful sedative.
Kreed, CMO
Ah, but she had known. During the senior staff briefing and after with Xam. But how did one fight a sound that wasn’t there? What if it got the ship? What if it took her crew? Took Xam? Harmed poor Rand, the sweet child. “No…” she couldn’t sleep, she had to… dark oblivion and silence took her.
Cpt. Asam, CO
Post Holiday Bump for the Boards.
SICKBAY SUMMARY — Kreed, Hart, Asam, Dovick
- Staffing & Environmental Anomalies
Attending physician NE Lt. (j.g.) Sovak (Vulcan) did not arrive for duty and is unresponsive to repeated comm hails.
His absence is considered highly anomalous given Vulcan behavioral norms.Multiple monitor malfunctions observed:
Displays pulsed with static twice in quick succession, repeatedly.
Pulses were later confirmed to be synchronized with similar anomalies on the bridge.
No internal power or hardware fault identified at time of observation.
- Lt. (j.g.) Zaril Dovek — Medical Status
Presented earlier with extreme, escalating hunger:
Metabolic scans showed accelerated nutrient absorption far beyond physiological norms.
Hunger projected empathically, causing nearby crew to feel hunger as well.Neurological findings:
Abnormal neural compulsion bursts synchronized with external subspace harmonic frequencies.
No internal pathology or known disorder identified.Treatment:
Sedation and metabolic suppressants administered.Result: stabilization of vitals and suppression of empathic projection.
Post-sedation condition:
Conscious but groggy.
Reports feeling cut off from emotional field, likened to sensory deprivation.
Hunger reduced but not eliminated.
Despite medical concerns, Dovek was ordered to the bridge by Captain Asam.
Leah Hart escorted him personally due to instability.
- Lt. Leah Hart, NP — Observations & Actions
Identified and reported monitor anomalies.
Escalated Sovak’s absence to Engineering, Security, and Medical Command.Called in Dr. Kreed (CMO)
Escorted Dovek to the bridge while maintaining Sickbay continuity.
- Captain Rende Asam — Medical Admission
Captain arrived in Sickbay escorted by Security.
Declared herself “compromised” and formally relinquished command to Cmdr. Alden.Behavioral and physiological indicators:
Elevated heart rate, adrenaline surge, temperature instability.
Maintained physical distance from others; strong fight-or-flight response.Reported symptoms:
Hearing discordant music without external stimulus.
Empathic perception active even in silence.
Emotional dysregulation and uncharacteristic aggression:
Attempted to brig her yeoman.
Drew a weapon on bridge crew.Placed under medical custody by Dr. Kreed.
- Dr. Kreed’s Neurological Findings
Cortical hyperactivity, especially in auditory and empathic processing centers.
Continuous auditory cortex stimulation with no sensory input.
Detection of subspace harmonic resonance embedded in neural activity.
Frequencies match those found in Dovek’s earlier metabolic event.Neural scans revealed:
Two overlapping emotional/neural signatures:
One belonging to Asam.
One non-humanoid, external, phase-shifted but synchronized.
Autonomic system responding as if under psychic assault.Sickbay equipment briefly synchronized with her scans:
Monitors pulsed twice.
Privacy field shimmered.A faint tone perceived in the environment:
Not mechanical.
Described as the sensation of sound rather than sound itself.
- Current Medical Conclusions
The anomalies affecting Dovek and Asam share a common external origin.
Effects appear personalized based on neural/empathic sensitivity:
Hunger (Dovek)
Sound/music (Asam)The phenomenon:
Is not internal pathology.
Exhibits intentional rhythmic patterning.
Is capable of interacting with biological and ship systems simultaneously.
- Status
Captain Asam under medical observation.
CMO Kreed actively investigating neural/subspace interface.
Dovek ambulatory but medically fragile.
Sickbay remains understaffed and partially compromised.
The anomaly is escalating and no longer confined to a single individual or department.Cpt. Asam, CO
OOC: I technically still have my med NPCs in Sickbay, but I don’t know if I’m needed. Should I still be here? ~Linds
