Roman left her office and headed straight to his own. The first thing he did was page Rand personally. “Do you have a second, Rand?”

[O]Of course Commander. I’ll be right there.[C] She was expecting the call. She was really happy for him, but she was really anxious too. She waited for the door to open and stepped into his office. “What can I do for you, Commander?” she asked formally before the door slid closed.

Yeoman Rand

“We’re going to Kelmao, Rand. Two weeks, I’ll be in command of the science outpost we’re building there.” He looked at her and smiled. “The Captain already wrote your orders, you’re going too.”

Rand blinked once. Roman kind of threw it all at her in a rush. She was too busy trying to figure out what exactly she should say about him leaving. He deserved this, he deserved the promotion. It was a dream position for him. She couldn’t cry or show disappointment right? He’d feel bad. Or would he think she didn’t care if she didn’t? She didn’t know what to say. She gripped her hands, hidden in her lap, where she sat across from him. What was she supposed to do?

“Wha.... what?”

Yeoman Rand

Roman reached over his desk for her hand. “The Captain is letting you go with me. I’m not leaving you.”

Her hand rested in his, he could feel the nerves in her making her hand tremble. “But… but I’m not a scientist.”

Yeoman Rand

“No, you’re the best yeoman in the Fleet. The orders state you are necessary to keep everything organized and smooth as we get things going.” Roman said gently.

Rand froze and looked up at him. “Really?” Her fingers flexed slightly. “I’m really going with you?”

Yeoman Rand

Roman nodded and offered her a PaDD with her orders on it. “Captain Asam made sure of it, I think.”

Rand beamed. “What do we need to do first?” She reached for her PaDD and began taking notes.

Yeoman Rand

“Make plans. All of the animals need to be prepped for travel. Any that won’t fit with us on the shuttle must be shipped to us. Then there’s handing off duties…” He listed a bunch of things.

Rand was busy for the next several days. First and foremost were both Roman and hers acceptance of their new orders. Orders went out to prep the animals for storage. Chief Helpful go to work isolating and packing all the supplies kept in the cargo bay. Request for personnel records and offers of potions were sent out. Not just scientists but engineers, a medical team, security. A basic structure would be built, but Roman had to expand on it and put in the request for what else he wanted. Plus Rand had her regular duties. Though Captain Asam shooed her away with a laugh. Though Rand did stay up the first night reviewing records of other yeoman and then quietly leaving a list of recommendations for Asam on her desk.
