Rende sat at her desk in her quarters staring at the dispatch that Rand had just given her. Poor girl. Despite her composure Rende could hear the excitement and sadness in Rand’s voice. Rende thought it was excellent and had actually put the bug in command’s ear. It was well deserved. It was her loss, but an exciting opportunity. “Thank you, Rand. Dismissed.” Once the door closed Rende pressed the ship comm button on her desk. [O]Cmdr Alden report to Captain Asam immediately.[C]Cpt. Asam, CO
It was not long before Roman arrived at the door of the office. “Captain?” He asked as the door opened.
~ Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO
Rende smiled at him as he came in. “Hello Roman. Have a seat. Tea? I had Rand bring it.” She motioned to a cup across from her. “I have some news.”
Cpt. Asam, CO
Roman took the tea with a nod of thanks. “Thank you. What news requires such a formal meeting?” he asked.
~ Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO
“This will probably surprise you, but I have new orders here for you.” She turned the computer screen around. On it was orders from Star Fleet Science Command, naming Alden CO of the research facility to be set up on Kelmao. He would get to choose his own staff, and determine the parameters of the research conducted. If he accepted a transport was in route to meet him in two weeks to transfer him.
Cpt. Asam, CO
There were notes of surprise, excitement, but also sadness and doubt. “I- what? Really?” He said, looking at Adam after reading the screen. “In two weeks?”
~ Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO
Rende smiled, “Yes. Your preliminary survey has been reviewed, and Science Command was impressed. They want you to command the research team. You’ve earned it Alden. You’ve worked hard, and you’re a fair leader, and you are an exceptional scientist.”
Cpt. Asam, CO
Roman rubbed his leg based entirely on memory. “It won’t be easy.” He commented softly. He was, of course, primarily concerned about leaving Rand, having assumed she wasn’t coming. “It’s not a choice, I presume.”
~ Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO
“Well, one does not tend to ignore orders from Command. Unless you plan to resign,” Rende said. “I was thinking, you will need an excellent yeoman to help keep track of everything. Personnel, reports, supplies. Someone who will learn your preferences quickly. I have a suggestion.”
She slid a PaDD closer to him. Instead of a personnel file, it was orders for Rand to be transferred to his command at the Kelmao research station.
Cpt. Asam, CO
Roman glanced between the file and Rende. “You’re giving up Rand?” He asked. She could hear the notes of relief and happiness. He would be in charge of a science command. On an alien planet. With Rand. And she had loved Kelmao, despite their difficulties there.
~ Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO
Rende smiled. “Well she is already familiar with your command style and preferences. She knows how you like things. This is a good project for her. It will allow her to shine in a way she can’t on a ship.”
“On a personal level, I think she will be better with someone who understands her and knows what to look for with her health. Rand is quietly stubborn and an excellent officer, but she deserves more than duty.” She grinned, “And I am a hopeless romantic.”
Cpt. Asam, CO
Roman flushed softly. “You’ll keep in touch, won’t you, Captain?” He asked. He was already considering who he’d worked with who he could ask for. And silently extremely sad Jay wouldn’t be there.
~ Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO
The captain laughed softly, “As often as I can. I want to know how you are doing. This is a great opportunity. I hate to lose you both, but it’s time, Roman. You’ve earned this.”
Cpt. Asam, CO
“There’s nothing there, not yet. We’ll be building the science outpost.” Roman commented. He eyed her with a bit of a cheeky grin, “Thank you.”
~ Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO
Rende smiled, “You’re welcome. Though it was all your own work and results that got you noticed. You’ll be missed. And if you have any suggestions for someone to take your place…”
Cpt. Asam, CO
Roman gave her a list of names, complete with their current stations. “Any one of them will do.” He smiled sadly. “I’m gonna miss her, Rende.” He said, meaning the ship.
~ Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO
“She’s going to miss you. We all will. But our usual patrol will bring us by there. I can’t wait to see what you do with it.” She sipped her coffee. “Any questions for me?”
Cpt. Asam, CO
Roman shook his head. “No, Ma’am. I’ll just need to use these two weeks to prepare.”
~ Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO
“Well I think Franks can handle things for you. You can have Rand to help you. I can manage without her. I haven’t told her yet. I thought you might want to.”
Cpt. Asam, CO
Roman nodded. “I will, right away. She’ll be elated,” he said. “She loved Kelmao.”
~ Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO
“Good. Now go on, get busy!” Rende smiled and shewed him out of her office.
Cpt. Asam, CO
Roman left her office and headed straight to his own. The first thing he did was page Rand personally. “Do you have a second, Rand?”
~ Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO
[O]Of course Commander. I’ll be right there.[C] She was expecting the call. She was really happy for him, but she was really anxious too. She waited for the door to open and stepped into his office. “What can I do for you, Commander?” she asked formally before the door slid closed.
Yeoman Rand
“We’re going to Kelmao, Rand. Two weeks, I’ll be in command of the science outpost we’re building there.” He looked at her and smiled. “The Captain already wrote your orders, you’re going too.”
~ Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO
Rand blinked once. Roman kind of threw it all at her in a rush. She was too busy trying to figure out what exactly she should say about him leaving. He deserved this, he deserved the promotion. It was a dream position for him. She couldn’t cry or show disappointment right? He’d feel bad. Or would he think she didn’t care if she didn’t? She didn’t know what to say. She gripped her hands, hidden in her lap, where she sat across from him. What was she supposed to do?
“Wha.... what?”
Yeoman Rand
Roman reached over his desk for her hand. “The Captain is letting you go with me. I’m not leaving you.”
