“Okay, we’ll take a look,” Leah said in her most reassuring and calm tone. She took people’s concerns seriously but she also didn’t want to compound issues by accidentally increasing Rand’s anxiety.

She focused a scan of the yeoman’s heart, looking for any anomalies that couldn’t be attributed to the epinephrine.

~Leah Hart, NP

Rand’s heart was fine. Racing from the epinephrine, but it was steady and strong, no signs of inflammation, swelling, or constriction.

Yeoman Rand

Leah reached back and grabbed a stool and rolled to over, sitting at the side of the bed, her face more level with Rand’s. “The scan shows your heart is strong and health. It’s beating faster because of the epinephrine and it’s completely normal. It will pass. I could give you something to counter it if necessary but if you think you can take deep breaths with me, then it will help.”

~Leah Hart, NP

Leah’s reassurance only slightly relaxed her. She was fine, she was fine, she was fine.

Rand nodded, placed her hands over her stomach, closed her eyes, and took several deep slow breaths. She concentrated on making each one as deep and slow as she could manage.

Yeoman Rand

“Good,” Leah said, her voice soothing and soft.

“Have you ever done meditation or similar visualization exercises?” Hart asked.

~Leah Hart, NP

Rand nodded, her eyes still closed as she breathed. “Yes. Counting my breathes seems to help the most.”

Yeoman Rand

“Okay, why don’t you do that. Count them aloud for me,” Leah said. “I’ll keep an eye on your vitals, and I’m sure they’ll be back to normal soon.”

~Leah Hart, NP

Rand nodded and started quietly counting her breaths. It was a little harder trying to breath slow and deep and talk at the same time. It wasn’t as smooth and steady as she usually could make them, but she did her best, keeping track of her breaths out loud.

Yeoman Rand

There was a method to her madness, even though she could see that Rand was struggling a bit with the rhythm of counting and breathing. But it was engaging different parts of her brain at the same time and that made it easier for the parasympathetic nervous system to calm everything down.

As Rand counted, Leah watched her vitals and she could see everything returning to a more expected level. “How are you feeling now?”

~Leah Hart, NP

It really wasn’t helping. It was stressing her out more that it was taking longer than normal to even out her breathing. But she was able to breathe where she couldn’t before the medicine, so that was better. “Better.” She said between counts.

Yeoman Rand

Leah nodded. “Okay, you can stop counting now. I want to keep you for a bit longer for observation, but if everything continues improving and you have no other reactions, you’ll be free to go.”

~Leah Hart, NP

Rand nodded. “Could… could you call Roman?” She hated being in sickbay. She knew he might not be able to come, but she wanted him to know where she was.

Yeoman Rand

Leah nodded. “Of course.” She patted Rand’s shoulder gently and rose from the stool.

Stepping over the comm, Leah activated it. [O]Sickbay to Commander Alden.[o]

[o]It’s Nurse Hart. If you can step away, Sir, Yeoman Rand needs to see you here in Sickbay for a little bit.[o] She didn’t want to give more details in case he wasn’t alone.

~Leah Hart, NP

[o]On my way.[o] The answer was immediate. They both knew he’d never leave something critical unattended, so he must have been available, but the worry in his voice was clear. It wasn’t much later that he had arrived and was directed to Hart and Rand.

~ Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO

Rand was on a biobed. She looked out of it and woozy, but her eyes met his as he entered.

Yeoman Rand

Roman rushed to her side and took her hand. “What happened?”

~ Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO

Rand winced a little as he grabbed her hand. Her hand was still sore from the swelling and burning pain. The swelling had gone down though, the welts fading quickly, but the residual signs were still there. “Couldn’t breathe,” she said quietly.

“Allergic reaction. Anaphylaxis. Her symptoms have subsided once she got treatment, but I want to keep her here a little longer to make sure everything is good,” Leah said to Alden.

Shifting her gaze to Rand, she gave the woman a reassuring smile. “Call for me if you feel any symptoms coming back. But rest and I can release you to your quarters in a bit.”

~Leah Hart, NP

“What is she allergic to?” Roman asked her, sitting by Rand’s bed.

~ Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO

OOC: Posting the information here so Leah doesn’t have to go look it up again:

Cormaline was on her skin. It was a relatively common mineral mined on many planets and was considered safe. That didn’t seem to be the problem. There was another compound that the computer was having to process. That seemed to be what was causing the problem. It also seemed to react to water, which was making it reactive and spread faster. The computer finally trilled and identified the other substance as Pergium. A rare element that was used in pergium reactors. Highly valuable and extremely rare.

Yeoman Rand

“She came into contact with pergium and cormaline. We’re not sure which one was the trigger, but it’s most likely the pergium and it might require more testing later. For now, I’m confident that she got treatment in time, so she’ll recover fully,” Leah said.

OOC: I don’t want to get into the ‘how’s’ of it since that was from a previous sim and we’re not continuing that story.

~Leah Hart, NP

OOC: Yeah, I know. Roman would probably know that’s why anyways.

IC: Roman nodded and rubbed her hand gently. “I’m just happy you seem okay,” he said gently.

~ Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO

Rand nodded. She felt like she couldn’t get up or lift her hand even and her head was pounding. “My head hurts,” she mumbled. She was glad Roman was there. She wasn’t ready to go back to her quarters though. That had been terrifying and she was more than willing to stay where she could get help.

Yeoman Rand

“Is it a new pain in your head or did you have it before as well?” Leah said, checking the scans to see the location and possible cause of the headache. High heart rate seemed likely, due to blood pressure changes and stress, but she didn’t want to rule anything out.

~Leah Hart, NP

“New,” Rand said. The scans showed it was as Leah thought, due to blood pressure changes and reaction to the epinephrine.

Yeoman Rand

“Okay. I can give you an analgesic that won’t increase your blood pressure any further. It’ll help with the pain, but it’ll take a bit of of time until the epinephrine effects dissipate,” Leah said.

~Leah Hart, NP

Rand nodded slightly, “Thank you, Lt Hart.” She closed her eyes and tried to relax. She hated this feeling of her heart out of control and the headache. Her heart was fine. Hart had told her so, but it still scared her.

Yeoman Rand

Leah gave her a soft smile. “I’ll let you rest for a bit, but I’ll be nearby. If you need anything just ask.” She stepped away to give the couple some privacy and update the yeoman’s chart.

~Leah Hart, NP

“Thank you,” Roman said to Hart, giving her a little smile. He looked down at Rand. “How is it neither of us can avoid trouble?”

~ Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO

“Thank you, Lt.” Rand said quietly. She looked at Roman, upset. “I wasn’t trying to get into trouble.”

Yeoman Rand

Roman smiled and rubbed the back of her hand gently. “I know you weren’t, Rand,” He said softly.

~ Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO

“I didn’t know I was allergic to anything,” she said softly. She looked down at her hand, which seemed to still look a little red and swollen. She knew it wasn’t, it was just her anxiety making her worry. “I’m sorry you had to come here.”

Yeoman Rand

“That’s how we find out you are. You won’t come into contact with it again,” Roman said, smiling. He shook his head. “Don’t worry about that right now.”

~ Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO

But Rand was worried about it. She had asked Leah to ask Roman to come down here, but she shouldn’t have. Not only did he hate sickbay, he hated leaving the lab. She shouldn’t have asked. She nodded, “I’m not even sure what it was. Lt. Hart said it was something on the paper I touched.”
