“Okay, we’ll take a look,” Leah said in her most reassuring and calm tone. She took people’s concerns seriously but she also didn’t want to compound issues by accidentally increasing Rand’s anxiety.

She focused a scan of the yeoman’s heart, looking for any anomalies that couldn’t be attributed to the epinephrine.

Rand’s heart was fine. Racing from the epinephrine, but it was steady and strong, no signs of inflammation, swelling, or constriction.

Yeoman Rand

Leah reached back and grabbed a stool and rolled to over, sitting at the side of the bed, her face more level with Rand’s. “The scan shows your heart is strong and health. It’s beating faster because of the epinephrine and it’s completely normal. It will pass. I could give you something to counter it if necessary but if you think you can take deep breaths with me, then it will help.”

Leah’s reassurance only slightly relaxed her. She was fine, she was fine, she was fine.

Rand nodded, placed her hands over her stomach, closed her eyes, and took several deep slow breaths. She concentrated on making each one as deep and slow as she could manage.

Yeoman Rand

“Good,” Leah said, her voice soothing and soft.

“Have you ever done meditation or similar visualization exercises?” Hart asked.

Rand nodded, her eyes still closed as she breathed. “Yes. Counting my breathes seems to help the most.”

Yeoman Rand

“Okay, why don’t you do that. Count them aloud for me,” Leah said. “I’ll keep an eye on your vitals, and I’m sure they’ll be back to normal soon.”

Rand nodded and started quietly counting her breaths. It was a little harder trying to breath slow and deep and talk at the same time. It wasn’t as smooth and steady as she usually could make them, but she did her best, keeping track of her breaths out loud.
