Leah was concerned but it never showed on her face. “I’d like to get you to Sickbay and not only take a closer look, but clean off your hand really well. You’re definitely having a reaction to whatever substance you’ve come into contact with.”
~Leah Hart, NP
“But,” Rand looked at everything in front of her, and the various communicators she was using to get information back and forth on the ship and the station while things were down. “I have to finish this for Captain Asam. I can come after?”
Yeoman Rand
Hart shook her head. “Nope. It can wait. I know for certain the Captain will understand.” Leah rose to her feet. “Come on, before it gets too much worse.” She cracked a smirk. “Don’t make me have to get the transporter room to beam you to Sickbay.” And she absolutely would too, and likely Rand knew that.

Rand knew the captain would come down and toss her over her shoulder and carry her to Sickbay herself. Rand looked a bit panicked. The idea of leaving work unfinished made her anxious. “Umm… just… just let me save my PaDD.” All those calls waiting…those files, she needed them… the captain needed them. Her hand was really starting to hurt though that could be because she was aware of it now. She tapped away on the various PaDDs saving the work and trying setting them up to automatically accept whatever came in…even as she was trying to edge toward the door so Leah wouldn’t actually use a transporter on her.
Yeoman Rand
Leah had gathered her kit and sent her teammate onwards to search the rest of their decks. She stood at the door with a ‘don’t test me’ expression and held out her hands. “Here, let me hep carry some of that stuff.”
When they finally made it to Sickbay, Hart set Rand’s belongings safely at the back work area where it wouldn’t be touched, washed her hands and re-gloved. “Okay, I need you to take your uniform jacket off and come over to the sink back here. I’m going to use a sterilizing gel, but I want to try and wash off as much of the substance as I can first.”

Rand was very glad that she wore a camisole under her uniform, but still, she wore the dress style. “Umm, Lt. can I have a gown?” Rand was shy and it was bad enough to be in a medical gown. She couldn’t just strip off her dress and walk around the med bay. She was dutifully unpinning her tartan sash and undoing the back zipper as she asked. Though it was difficult, her hand felt swollen and hot now. “I think I need help.”
Yeoman Rand
“Of course,” Leah said with a reassuring smile. She led Rand to a room and helped her change.
Back at the sink (one of the rare times they really ever used it), Leah donned another set of gloves and began to wash off whatever might be on her skin. She already had the scan to refer to later, but for now it was most important to stop the irritation. “How is it feeling now, any change?” she asked, glancing at Rand.

In the time it took for Rand to get changed her hand had really begun to swell. It was splotched with hive like patches and puffy. The hives seemed to be spreading up her arm as they watched. As if the water was spreading it. “It hurts, a lot.” Her chest felt tight, like she couldn’t get enough air. She was not going panic, this was no big deal. She wouldn’t panic, but she couldn’t seem to get more air no matter how slowly she breathed.
Yeoman Rand
“Okay,” Leah said, keeping her tone straightforward and calm as she dried off the hand and moved them swiftly to the biobed. “Breath slow and even. I’m going to give you a strong antihistamine,” she said, quickly checking Rand’s record for any allergies or intolerances that might complicate this situation. They needed to get on top of this fast before Rand needed epinephrine.

Rand had no known allergies. She tried to breathe m, count her breaths like she knew to do but she couldn’t get any air. The air wheezed through her throat and then stopped as her throat swelled and closed. She staggered and fell.
Yeoman Rand
Short thought she was, Leah was strong and caught Rand. “I need help over here!” Nurse Montri rushed over. “I need epinephrine now,” she said urgently but in control, holding out her hand.
A hypo hit her hand and Hart pressed it to Rand’s neck. A telltale hiss ensured and then the pair lifted the yeoman to a biobed. Leah watched the reading intently, not only to see if the epinephrine was working but to see if whatever the hell this substance was was affecting any other systems. It had moved fast, but then again she had to remember that there had been time between contact and when Leah had found Rand in the conference room.

Cormaline was on her skin. It was a relatively common mineral mined on many planets and was considered safe. That didn’t seem to be the problem. There was another compound that the computer was having to process. That seemed to be what was causing the problem. It also seemed to react to water, which was making it reactive and spread faster. The computer finally trilled and identified the other substance as Pergium. A rare element that was used in pergium reactors. Highly valuable and extremely rare.
Rand laid on the bed, the epinephrine doing its job quickly. Her breath came easer as her throat opened, and the splotches began to fade some. It caused a surge of panic though as she felt her heart rate start to increase and stutter and she felt dizzy. A normal side effect of the medicine, but it made her think her heart was faltering again even though Kreed assured her it wouldn’t happen again, the fear was still there.
Yeoman Rand
As the monitor registered the increased heart rate, Leah reached out and rested a hand gently on Rand’s shoulder. “Hey, easy now. It’s okay, Rand. Just take slow and deep breaths. You’ve had an anaphylactic reaction to the substance that was on your skin. The epinephrine is helping that, but you’re feeling it in your system and it’s normal to have some side effects.”
~Leah Hart, NP
Rand nodded, but fear flashed over her face. She understood what Leah was saying, but “My heart.” Lt. Kreed told her her heart was fine, totally healed, no risk of a recurrence, but the way her heart was racing now, she wasn’t so sure.
Yeoman Rand
“Okay, we’ll take a look,” Leah said in her most reassuring and calm tone. She took people’s concerns seriously but she also didn’t want to compound issues by accidentally increasing Rand’s anxiety.
She focused a scan of the yeoman’s heart, looking for any anomalies that couldn’t be attributed to the epinephrine.
