Chandel entered Astrometrics on Deck 12 and looked around curiously to see if anyone was on duty. Just as she had hoped there was a huge static map of the Alpha Quadrant on one of the back walls. She quickly moved over to the map and studied it for Cipharus III. Maybe there was a star or moon near it that started with TQ.

The following information was known about the system.

System: Cipharus
Number of Planets: 7

The classification of planets is as follows:
Cipharus I :Class Y
Cipharus II: Class J
Cipharus III: Class M
Cipharus IV: Class K
Cipharus V: Class J
Cipharus VI: Class T
Cipharus VII: Class J

Information Cipharus III:

The planet has two main continents.

The northern continent is mostly farmland with a small desert in the southwest, a large mountain region that stretches from the eastern coast to the western coast.
The northern continent is 9,000,712 SqKm

The southern continent is very mountainous and volcanic with very little natural vegetation. There is a single colony that is the Andorian mining base. On the northern coastline, there are remains of a city that has long been destroyed. It is unknown what caused the destruction at this time.
The southern continent is 3,987,003 SqKm.

However there were no nearby celestial objects with the initials of TQ.

Chandel frowned and looked to see if there was anything more on the mining base and the city that was destroyed.

Unfortunately the printed map didn’t have more information. Chandel would have to wait until the computers were back on line to search further. However she could always do the forensic analysis on the note while she waited. Everything she needed was in the general sciences lab.

Chandel huffed in frustration and turned and left Astrometrics and headed back to the lab.
As soon as she entered the lab she moved over to the microscope. It usually was hooked up to the computer but it did have a manual feature. Using tweezers she took the paper out of the plastic sleeve and set it under the microscope. Twiddling with the focus dials she peered in the lens. She needed to see if the note had been hand written or typed. What type of ink had been used?

The note appeared to be hand written. A chemical analysis could be used to determine the type of ink and paper. Once the computer was restored, handwriting analysis could be used as well.

After she determined that she carefully picked up the paper again with tweezers and set it on a tray before she collected dusting powder. Carefully she sprinkled it with the powder she put it back under the microscope to look for fingerprints. She wouldn’t be able to search the database yet to match the prints but it was a good start.

There were several prints on the paper. They would need to be run through the computer for identification, or could be compared with fresh samples if they found a suspect. Chandel would also check to see who on the crew had handled the paper and take samples from them to rule out those prints.

Chandel nodded to herself as she got out a digital camera and took pictures of the prints for future reference. That done she slid the paper back into the sleeve. She’d like to do a chemical analysis of the paper and ink but would need the computers assistance for that.

It took roughly 2 hours fir the computers to come back online. Then before Chandel could begin further analysis all the equipment t had to be restarted and checked.

Chandel sighed in relief when she was informed by Engineering to go ahead and reboot her lab computers and run diagnostics. “Computer reboot all stations and run a Level 1 diagnostic.” It was the most thorough and required manual checking but it ensured that the system was error free.

At the end of the few hours Chandel manually checked all the files to be sure they were error free.

Nothing as far as the computer database was concerned was corrupted. The computer did inform her that all experiments that had been running would have to be restarted.

“Oh lovely,” Chandel grumbled as she keyed in a message to all Science staff and the CSO to inform them of that.

She then feed the paper into the computer and asked for a paper micrometer analysis to measure for key thickness. To this she added X-radiography, Infrared, and Ultraviolet Light to examine for alterations, erasures and hidden features not visible under normal light.

No hidden marks or inks were on the paper. It was a standard 20lb stock found throughout the Federation. Ultraviolet showed the impression of a previous word probably inscribed 5 sheets away from the current sheet. The two words were ohlasa and hraas. The infrared light showed a metallic sheen to the paper that almost looked like glitter.

“Fascinating.” Chandel murmured to herself. Being El Aurian, unbeknownst to her shipmates or Starfleet, she was multi linguistic and spoke, read and wrote many languages. She recognized this one at a glance. Andorian.
“Murder and explosion/fire..” Was this orders for someone perhaps? Hard to tell with only those two words.

After that she ran a Handwriting Analysis and Graphology to analyze the handwriting.
Once she had all this information she could run a search query for where the paper might have come from and then handwriting comparisons against the crew.

There was no known match, but the analysis determined the handwriter was most likely left handed and female.

“Left handed female. Computer any epithelial cells or fingerprints on the paper?”

“There are epithelial cells. Collection necessary to run DNA analysis on epithelial cells.”

“Granular powder containing pigment, metals, and metal oxides required to determine presence of and analysis of fingerprints,” the computer chirped helpfully.

Chandel grunted and read the listing of the amounts of said materials that the computer put up on screen. She collected the materials and carefully followed the steps to dust the paper then using a small sticky sided piece of polymer she carefully took the fingerprints off the paper and ran them through the computer to see if she could get a match.

There were six distinct sets of prints on the paper. The first four were identified as Captain Rende Asam, Commander Roman Alden, Lt. j.g. Miranda Farquharson, and Ensign Chandel. The other two were clean enough for an identification, but they were not within the Sentinel’s database. Connecting to the starbase computer did not render any matches within Star Fleet.

“Ohhh duh!” Chandel said to herself, “Cherie, you are an idiot!” She laughed softly to herself recognizing the young yeoman who had welcomed her to the ship on her first day. She hadn’t recognized the name. She had been going to start her report then remembered that with the computer up she could go back to Astrometrics and finish looking for place names. She carefully took the paper out of the scanner and put it back in a protective sleeve before locking it up.
Leaving the labs she headed back into Astrometrics and booted up the mainframe.
“Computer: Show me Cipharus III again and search the land maps for any place names with the initials of TQ.”

“Taani Quay, Tquan, and tramull qollulti” The computer trilled out.

Chandel blinked in surprise as she was expecting to see the places on the holographic map rather than being called out by the computer.
“Computer, show me Taani Quay on the map of Cipharus III and tell me more about it.”

The map zoomed in show a blip over the capitol city. “Taani Quay is considered an up scale pup in the middle of the capitol city that is frequented by the more upper class of the colonies residence.”

“Hmm,” Chandel mused to herself, not really having any clue how this could fit in with mystery on their hands. She really was more inclined to think TQ referred to a name not a place.

“Computer tell me about the other two places with those initials.”

“Tquan is a lake in the north western hemosphere. It is a large salt water body. Tramull qollulti is a ridge of cliffs along the mountains of the Mederial Mountains. This ridge provides protection from the elements for the mine on Cipharus III.”

Picking up her datapad Chandel quickly typed in the new data then turned and headed for the bridge.
