(snip)
The next morning, Rende was awake early, as always, despite their very late night. At some point they had left the hammock and made their way back to the tent. Rende opened her eyes and stared up at the weather proof canvas of their tent. The fire had died down, but it was still warm beneath the blankets beside Xam. This was not how she had seen this shore leave going. She grinned in the semi dark. She wasn’t ready for it to end. It had been a century at least since Rende had felt compelled to be lazy and give up her duties and obligations to just indulge in life. They had to go back to the resort today though. The shuttles would arrive tomorrow to take them back to the Sentinel that was orbiting around Risa. Another day to savour, though it wasn’t exactly going to end was it? She grinned bigger at that, feeling centuries younger than she was. All because of the man beside her.

She slipped quietly from the bed. She stirred the fire to life and then stepped out into the dew chilled morning air. The animals were still silent and the moon held it’s breath waiting for the day to start. The wind blew gently, the chill raising goosebumps over her bare skin. She knelt beside the cold fire outside. She went through a mental checklist of what provisions they had left planning out a meal while skillfully bringing the fire back to life.

Cpt. Asam, CO

“You know, you kneeling like that is a sight I will never grow tired of.” came Xam’s familiar voice. He really was good. He had made zero noise walking up behind her. He looked down at her, the software breeze making his long white mustache flutter, and he smiled. “So you are the Skipper, yeah? So technically you could order me to stay here with you forever. Just sayin’.” and he chuckled.

Ra’Ti, Chief Tactical Officer

Rende didn’t move except to turn her head and look over her shoulder at him. Her eyes roamed blatantly from his head to his toes and then back to his eyes. She liked his stealth and his skill and everything about him. “Don’t for one second think that thought didn’t wake me up early and keep me awake.” She turned back to the fire and stayed there a moment before rising smoothly to her feet and turning to face him. “We’d both be hunted for disertian. Unless you have some very advanced security systems on this moon, we’d never get to stay here and just enjoy each other.” She stepped up to him, running her fingers through his hair, “We’d have to run across the galaxy doing that.”

Cpt. Asam, CO

” Security systems we can buy. I know a guy…” he said with a grin. “Besides… there are advantages to owning a resort moon. Especially one where money can get everything me really good fake identities.”

Xam

“Yeah? So do I. But the question is are you ready to go back to that life?” Because Fleet would be after them. They wouldn’t want either Rende nor Xam outside of their control. Which was funny because Star Fleet wasn’t in control at all. The thing was though, Xam could tell she was seriously considering it. Throwing it all to the stars and running off with him.

Cpt. Asam, CO

Xam put his arms around her and said “If you and I are together, I’m ready for whatever life we get. Just say the word, and we are gone.” He then smiled and said ” But I know you… and you wouldn’t just bail on the crew like that. Maybe in the future, sure. But not right now. Besides… I still haven’t had the chance to blow anything up with a Federation ship. Can’t pass up that chance, now can I?” and he chuckled.

Ra’Ti, Chief Tactical Officer

Rende laughed, “Yes, let’s get our priorities in order. Blowing things up with the newest phaser and torpedo banks is at the top of the list.” She wasn’t teasing either. Rende had spent her life as a security and tactical expert. She’d even done a stint as a demolitions expert once. “Well, as Captain,” she moved slightly closer, “I’ll do my utmost to make sure you get that chance. You are so proficient with dangerous weapons, I can’t wait to see what you do with dangerous torpedoes.”

Cpt. Asam, CO

Bump

Xam gave her a look of mock offense and said “What? You didn’t see that already?” and he poured a little. “I must be losing my touch.” His eyes flicked towards her and then he grinned. “Guess I need more practice…” he said softly and with a grin as he leaned in and kissed her.

Ra’Ti, Chief Tactical Officer

Laughter rumbled over their lips as he kissed her. She didn’t buy the pout one bit. “Oh… I… saw,” Rende said between kisses. “I want… to see… more.”

Cpt. Asam, CO

Bump

The rest of the evening and night passed… eventfully… and dawn found them gathering up their personal effects. “So… when are we gonna come back? I mean, I know a guy that can get us a good deal on rates for staying here.” Xam said with a grin.

Ra’Ti, Chief Tactical Officer

Rende grinned, “Well, the Sentinel isn’t scheduled to be back this way for leave for a year. But I may have some personal leave time before then. If I can manage a ride.” Rende laughed, “I’ll let my yeoman work on that. If I believe the crew, she is like magic. She can do anything.”

Cpt. Asam, CO

“She does have a reputation, that one.” Xam said. He paused putting away one of the fusion lanterns and then looked at Rende. “So does the XO, just so you know. Smart guy, no doubt. But there is a bunch’a baggage with that one.” He put the lamp away and then said “And what’s up with the CMO? A Saurian doctor? Really? That’s just wild. I had a Saurian helmsman once. Craziest guy I ever met.” and he laughed.

Ra’Ti, Chief Tactical Officer

Rende shrugged, she was aware of Alden’s baggage. “We all have baggage, Xam. We all carry it differently, but we all have it. This crew has been through the gauntlet. That baggage is bound to start showing. Hence Lt. Hart’s presence.” She packed away the mess kits and fire starters. “Now Kreed…? He’d deny it, but even he has baggage.” She chuckled softly. “Very analytical, very scientific, very by the book. I imagine he and Alden are too much alike to not butt heads. Kreed won’t put up with the lazy standards of his predecessor. That’s why I wanted him. Well, that and he can keep a secret.”

Cpt. Asam, CO

Xam lifted a cooling crate onto the stack of crates he was making. “I read about the Doc. Is it really true? Did he get crushed inside a Jeffries Tube and left there for hours? That’s… something. Damn Saurians are built like dreadnoughts.” and he chuckled.

Ra’Ti, Chief Tactical Officer

Rende nodded, “It’s true. He was only a Cadet. He’s lucky, even for a Saurian his injuries were fatal. He had a long recovery, but after it all, he wanted to stay in Star Fleet.” She pulled a knife from her boot and stirred the ashes to make sure there were no lingering hot coals. “He’s dedicated, almost dangerously so. And stubborn which is good for when I get hurt. I am a very bad patient.”

Cpt. Asam, CO

Xam looked at her and grinned. “Well if you being taken care of requires you to be tied down to something, I volunteer as the lead restrainer.” and he laughed. He moved over to her and put his arms around her. He leaned in and kissed her, and then said

Rende’s brows went up with a gleam in her eyes. “Oh, now, that sounds like a dare, Xam.” She chuckled a bit wickedly as he leaned in to kiss her. The kiss was firery and promising. Her fingers threaded into his long white hair and encouraged him closer with a gentle tug.

“You know… I dunno how this happened or what it will bring. But I am really looking forward to finding that last part out.”

Ra’Ti, Chief Tactical Officer

In a very young, very cute, very feminine gesture, Rende rested her forehead against his and then rubbed the tip of her nose against his. She sighed contently in his arms. “I can’t wait.” Which was saying something for a woman who had seen and done all the things she had. “But, right now it brings a long hike back to the resort. One that will take infinitly longer than necessary because we can’t seem to keep our antics to a minimum.” She laughed quietly before kissing him again.

Cpt. Asam, CO

Bump

Xam chuckled and said “Well, we could always call for a shuttle and spend the rest of the day in one of our respective rooms. Thoughts?” and he kissed her again.

Ra’Ti, Chief Tactical Officer

“Mmmm, excellent idea. I guess what they put in your file is true.” She bent and grabbed her comm out of her bag. Standing, she flipped it open and called for a shuttle from the resort. With a soft snap she closed the comm, “I vote your room.”

Cpt. Asam, CO

Xam’s eyes narrowed. “Exactly what in my file is true, lady? Because I know for a fact that a good chunk is ready for the scream sheets on Orion… and about as true as you’d expect from their ‘media’.” and he chuckled.

Ra’Ti, Chief Tactical Officer

“Oh, what was it?” Rende tapped a finger to her lips, “Oh yes, ‘Xam Ra’Ti has an uncanny and unmatched ability to quickly and efficiently complete tedious preparation tasks when they allow him to more quickly move on to his favorite activities - blowing things up. This ability to quickly prioritize and find solutions makes him an unmatched tactical officer for the CO crazy or daring enough to trust him.’ I’m paraphrasing a bit.”

Cpt. Asam, CO

Xam looked sarcastically thoughtful for a moment and then said “Huh… I’ll accept that. I mean, they aren’t wrong.” and he grinned at her. “You know, I can’t wait to get back to the ship. You still haven’t seen me in my element, yet. Oh, you saw me out of my element- and many articles of clothing- , but you have yet to see me really do my thing.”

Ra’Ti, Chief Tactical Officer

Rende grinned, “Whatever gods might exist, save me. If you are as good at being in your element as you are out of it, I may have to excuse you from the bridge for a private conference.”

Cpt. Asam, CO

Xam laughed and said “Captain! Behave yourself!” and he moved next to her and slid an arm around her. He looked into her eyes and said “Oh… and I’m much better in my element, just so you know ”

Ra’Ti, Chief Tactical Officer

Rende laughed, “I’m the captain I don’t have to behave.” She leaned into him, “You know, I have a thing for men who can handle themselves un a fire fight. Especially ones that are… creative and innovative.” She stared back at him, “I’ll have to go looking for a fight so I can just how good you are.” Right about then they heard the shuttle approach and begin to land.

Cpt. Asam, CO

Xam looked at the shuttle as it came in and scowled. “Poop.” he said with a comical pout. He turned his head and looked at Rende. “Well… like the line from that classical Earth song said: ‘The clock’s run out, time’s up, over now. Snap back to reality…” and he shook his head and then grinned at her. “You should see me in a karaoke bar.” and he winked at her.

Ra’Ti, Chief Tactical Officer

Rende laughed, “Don’t pout,” she leaned in and kissed him as the shuttle landed. “We have one more night, and there happens to be a karaoke bar in the resort.” She laughed and grabbed her pack and stepped into the shuttle.

She settled on the large seat in the back and stretched out her legs. Her head leaned back and she closed her eyes as the shuttle lifted to take them back to the resort. A smile, somewhere between goofy and a smirk settled on her lips.

Cpt. Asam, CO

Xam sat down next to her and sighed, even as his hand settled on her leg. “One more night… Karaoke… well, may as well go out on a high note.” and he chuckled at his own pun.

Ra’Ti, Chief Tactical Officer

Rende swatted his arm softly. “Corney puns? You just keep getting better and better. I’ll have to put you under lock and key before someone tries to steal you away.” She was smirking. Her head back, eyes still closed. Her hand ran down his arm and rested over his.

Cpt. Asam, CO

He chuckled softly and said “I’m the only thief here, remember?” and he sighed and remained quiet for the trip back to the resort.

After the shuttle has landed and their belongings had been sent to their respective rooms, Xam took Rende’s hand and led her to the poolside bar. After ordering drinks for them both and escorting her to a table, he took a seat and then smiled at her. He raised his glass and said “To the past few days and to the future.”
