The tall nurse appeared wearing a satisfied smirk. Then turned her head back towards the room and called out, “The cavalry is here.” Montri stepped to the side to allow him to enter Leah’s room, where the three medical department staff had taken up protective residence over their friend.

Kreed walked in and looked at Hart, then at the rest of the medical team. “Well done. All of you. I am glad you were here to ensure she was cared for.”

“They tried to get us to leave because visiting hours were over, but we refused,” Doctor Hunter said. “We said we had our orders and they’d have to force us out. They’ve let us be since then.” Leah was clearly still unconscious and had a dermal patch on the left side of her skull.

Kreed nodded and then said “Good. And we will keep aember of the ship’s medical team here at all times. No further treatments or anything unless cleared by me.”

Sol McMahon was sitting on a stool at Leah’s bedside. “Vitals are currently stable, but she apparently had a seizure just before we arrived. We tried to explain that we could help, because we could get her medical history for them, but they wanted to talk to someone in charge, so I’m glad you’re here, Sir,” the med tech said.

Kreed ahooknhoa head. “Too much concern for authority and too little for ensuring proper communication. That is not encouraging.” he said flatly.

Sylvia’s speciality was endocrinology. “We tried to tell them that yes, she’s Human but she’s also Aldebaranian, but I don’t think they were processing what that meant. Then again, it’s been busy. Now that Leah is stable, they have been dealing with other emergencies.”

“Ensure that any meds she is given take into account her rate of metabolism. If the hospital won’t pay close enough attention, then it falls to us to do so.” Kreed replied.

There was a knock on the doorframe and a Risian man stepped in. “Doctor Kreed, I’m Doctor Lairso. I handled the neurosurgery on your crewmember.” He held out a PADD with the files Kreed had requested. He was about to fill him in on the situation, but cast a look at the others in the room. Kham just glared. “We’re staying. Fill us in.”

Kreed locked black eyes on the Risian doctor and said “These individuals are part of my medical team on the ship Lieutenant Hart is serving aboard. They are specialists in their respective fields, and I strongly suggest that you stop worrying about who is told what and just get on with it.”

After a moment, Lairso nodded and walked them through everything. “Lieutenant Hart was seen stumbling outside by one of the pools at a resort. EMS took statements from the bystanders, one of who described her as looking panicked. Like she didn’t know where she was. She didn’t respond directly to questions and when the man reached out to help her, she panicked further and ended up tripping over a patio lounger and hit the deck with enough force to cause a cerebral hemorrhage on her left temporal lobe. She rolled into the pool and the bystander went in after her, knowing she was already unconscious. Fortunately, she wasn’t in very long and EMS was able to clear her airway fairly quickly, though we’re keeping on eye out for signs of secondary drowning.

“When she arrived in the ER, her heart rate was slow, and blood pressure low. Her blood alcohol level was 0.027%, but she also had high levels of psilocin, the metabolized version of psilocybin. Based on the repeat readings, we can tell her body metabolizes substances fast, and most of it is already out of her system, but we’ve kept her sedated for the time being to reduce the stress on her body that waking up somewhere unfamiliar might provoke.

“She had one seizure in the ER and then her ICP rose dramatically, and she blew her left pupil. She was rushed up into surgery and I drained the bleed and repaired the damage. She’ll need a full neurological workup when she awakens, but the damage was fairly limited.” Lairso took in a deep breath and took them all in for a moment. “She’s had another seizure since surgery, but her vitals have improved over time. She’s pretty lucky, all things considered. She’s not the first party-goer to have their fun end badly, but I am optimistic that with continued treatments for concussion she’ll make a full recovery.”

Kham frowned and shook her head. “Leah wouldn’t take recreational drugs. Yes, we were all drinking quite a bit last night, but like you said, her metabolism runs fast. She’s aware of that and paces herself accordingly.” She looked over at Kreed. “She was completely cognizant when we split up last night. We had a whole system of signs to communicate at the club that we arranged ahead of time. She was happy and having fun dancing and signalled she wanted to stay and we could go.”

“We should have stayed with her,” Sol muttered, guilt written all over her face.

“Leah’s a grown woman, who knows when she feels safe and comfortable. If she had wanted us to stay, or to leave with us, she would have said so,” Sylvia said.

~Leah & Co.

“Enough.” Kreed said definitively. “Positing over what ‘could’ have been done is pointless. Save that reflection for your personal time.” He looked at Hart and then back at his team, ignoring the Risian doctor for the time being. “Kham, contact the ship. Tell them we need the Security Chief here right now. Doctor Hunter. You will go with Doctor Lairso and the two of you will pull any files with similarities: recreational drug use, incoherency, seizures, anything of the like. Compile a full list for Security to review.” He then turned and looked at Lairso. “When did you contact local law enforcement and let them know someone was drugged against their will?” he asked flatly.

Kreed, CMO

Kham and Sylvia both nodded and Kahm slipped out of the room.

Lairso blinked at Kreed. “There has been no evidence to this point to suggest this was anything more than overindulgence. But if that is a concern, than I’ll check with the ER charge nurse to see if they might have already done so. If not, we’ll contact the constabulary.”

Kreed looked at the man and then said “Did you check for signs of assault? Or did you simply decide, with no evidence to the contrary, that she took drugs and fell down? Did any of your staff ever even contemplate that this could be a criminal act? I am guessing no, as you failed to do the bare minimum to even identify her. She is a Star Fleet Officer. She is registered at the hotel. All you had to do was a simple computer search. She would have been identified immediately. Regardless… run scans for any signs of assault or struggle. And you have had her in your care for long enough to know how fast she metabolises the psilocybin. You can tell when she ingested it by now. That will give us a timeframe of the incident.”

The surgeon arched his brows at the Saurian’s assertions. There were a lot of assumptions being made and isn’t wasn’t just on his end. “I only met your colleague when she ended up on my operating table. What others did or didn’t do before that point I won’t guess at, but we can definitely check. But do keep in mind we didn’t know she was with Starfleet until someone identified her. It takes time for an unidentified person to be identified and that usually only happens if someone is looking for here. Hence your presence.” Lairso took a deep breath. “I understand you are concerned for your shipmate, but as a doctor yourself you should understand that our first priority was making sure she lived. The rest would and will unfold now that we have time to do so. I can’t speak to the involvement of law enforcement, but I can check, so I will do so.” Lairso spun on the ball of his foot and left.

Now that the crew had been identified (and believed) about being medical staff too, one of the nurses let Kham into the break room to make her call. [O] Montri to Sentinel. Dr. Kreed has asked for the Chief of Security to come down immediately to help investigate the situation.[o]

[O]Knowledge Montri. He will be down shortly. Sentinel out.[C] The comms officer informed Asam who made her way to Anders’ current location. “Lt. Anders, I need you to report to the hospital on Risa, ICU immediately. Lt Kreed is waiting for you and will fill you in.”

Asam, CO

Back in the room, Hunter moved beside Kreed , tipping the PADD in her direction. It was the first time she’d been able to look at all the full results. “Ironically, Leah’s research into therapeutic techniques across cultures is useful here. We were talking about it, so I know that psilocybin is used in micro-doses under the supervision of a clinician. It’s one of those substances that the dose determines the effects, but it’s not affected by metabolism nor body mass. However that is for Humans on Earth. I won’t discount variable effects of a larger dose on her body. And she still has 2.2 grams in her system. That means she would have ingested a rather large dose.” She cast a glance over at Lairson. “We’ll go see what’s in the database.” She leaned in and whispered to Kreed. “And I’ll make sure law enforcement is given the correct details.”

Sylvia stepped out of the room, leaving Kreed and Sol with Leah. The med tech was watching her vitals. “Even if she did take it herself, would she even remember? The hit to her temporal lobe could be problematic.”

~Leah Hart, NP

Kreed looked at the readouts and said “She will be fine. We will make sure of it.” His time was one of inflexible assuredness.

Kreed, CMO

McMahon nodded absently. Kham stepped back in and nodded at the pair. “Someone from security is on their way,” she said, stepping over to the other side of Leah’s bed and pulling a chair over. She took the hand of her friend. She was the one who was closest of the three of them who came with Leah to the resort, but she had to admit that she still didn’t know Hart all that well. Leah was open and friendly and fun to work with, but they hadn’t gotten into anything deep yet. There was so much she didn’t know about her and she really hoped she had the chance to change that.

A few minutes later, Dr. Hunter returned. “Alright, I’ve confirmed what I already knew and suspected. The seizures could be from the TBI, but a very small percentage of those who ingest large doses of psilocybin can experience seizures. The report of her confusion and panic tracks with what people would dub a ‘bad trip’- a negative reaction to the hyperstimulation from the drug. Couple that with alcohol and I can see it being really disorienting. Too high a dose from those not used to taking it can result in panic attacks. However, it’s very hard to overdose from psilocybin. It can be uncomfortable, but rarely dangerous. The danger comes from, well-“she gestured to Leah-“accidents and other effects from mixing substances.”

Sylvia watched the readouts. “The dose in her system is still high enough that we should leave her sedated, because frankly she’s still technically high right now. It would be more traumatic for her to wake up in a strange place under the influence of a psychoactive a drug. We could give her a serotonin-agonist anxiolytic, which would counter at least some of the pcyhoactive effects, but even then it’ll be hours before it’s out of her system enough that I would risk letting her wakeup.” She turned to Kreed. “I would feel better getting her back to the Sentinel. What are the chances they would release her into our care?”

Sol frowned and sucked in a breath. “Who is her emergency contact?”

“Her grandmother on Earth,” Kham said. “She’s too far away to do too much right now. But Leah’s immediate family is on Aldebaran. They’re, what, 20 light years from here? They might be an option.”

~Leah Hart, NP

“Her emergency contact is listed and we will abide by regulations and medical protocol.” Kreed said. “I will contact her grandmother and explain the situation. Kham, wait for security to arrive and then tell them everything that has happened this far.” He looked at Sylvia. “Examine her fully. I don’t trust this staff to have done as thorough a job as we have been trained to do. Compile all records for security, as well.” He finally faced Sol. “You are responsible for vetting anything and everything this staff does as both necessary and that it is done to my standards.” He looked at the group and blinked. “Understood?” He nodded once before he turned and walked out the door. He stopped at the nurse’s station. “Hello. I am Dr. Kreed of Star Fleet. Would you please direct me to your Hospital Administrator’s office?” The nurse gave him the directions, and in a few minutes he was walking into the Administrator’s office. He stopped at the receptionist’s desk and said “Lieutenant Kreed, Chief Medical Officer of the USS Sentinel. I need to speak to your Administrator, please. It is urgent.”

Kreed, CMO

A young Risian man gave a confused look. “Umm, hold on, let me see,” they said, rising and moving down the short hallway to the office at the end. They poked their head in, left the door open, and soon returned. “Dr. Reems will see you. Last door at the end of the hallway.”

Rising from their desk was a tall, slim woman. “Lieutenant Kreed, Dr. Shal Reems. How can I help you?” she said in a calm manner that suggested she was well used to managing chaos.

~Leah Hart, NP

Kreed stepped forward and said “Doctor Reems, a pleasure. I am the Chief Medical Officer of the USS Sentinel, currently docked at your orbital platform. I have a crew member in the care of your facility, and I would like to formally request attending privaledges for the hospital so that I may maintain her care. Usually I would simply transfer her back the ship; but I am uncertain of moving her at this time would be advisable. You are welcome to verify my credentials with Star Fleet and the Federation Medical Council.”

Kreed, CMO

Reems tried not to frown but wasn’t fully successful. After a moment, she shook herself out of a momentary reverie. “Sorry, yes of course. I’ll ask for your credentials to be sent for verification, but I have no issue with you seeing to your crewmates care. But fill me in. We get Starfleet personnel in the ER on occasion due to accidents and such on R&R but it sounds to be more serious than that.” Usually she wasn’t dealing with the medical staff from a ship in orbit, and this hospital was small. Yes, they could handle serious cases, but there were limits.

~Dr. Reems

“She was drugged and found after falling and suffering a TBI. I have asked her current attending, a Dr. Lairso, to give one of my medical team access to her records.” He paused and looked at the Administrator for a moment before saying “I also asked why more effort wasn’t put into identifying my crew member. A simple facial scan would have flagged her record immediately. Instead, she was unaccounted for for several hours… hours during which she had surgery performed on her with no contact to anyone. And yes, I understand the need for immediate action. What I do not understand is why the attempt to identify her wasn’t made hardly at all. This is not to say that I believe any of your staff was deliquent or negligent. I am simply saying I do not understand how that lack of ithe attempt to ascertain her dentification was not done… or rather, why it was done so half-heartedly.”

Kreed, CMO

Reems’ frown deepened. “I have no idea myself, but I promise you I’ll look in to it. I will say, and I’m not trying to make excuses, but we are a much smaller facility and we don’t have the resources of one of the full trauma centres in the cities do. But I will investigate,” she said in earnest.

“Anything else you need in the meantime?”

Downstairs in the ICU, the Sentinel’s med staff went about their orders, with Syliva leading the very careful examination of their coworker. It was unfortunate that it was so much later, and that Leah had fallen into the water. It made certain aspects of this trickier. McMahon was recording everything they did and adding it to the new copy of Leah’s admission file. The ward staff seemed to have at least gotten the message that their cooperation was in everyone’s best interest and they were not interfering and making sure the trio had the resources they needed, though for the moment Kham stood as a sentinel at the door to Leah’s room until security arrived.

~Leah Hart, NP

The monitors suddenly beeped urgently. Hunter read the screen and was on the move to Leah just as she started to have a clonic seizure. “Kham, we need you!” Sylvia said. “Call one of the nurses too.”

“You two, get her on her side and protect her airway,” Hunter told Sol and Kham. “I need a moment to work out our drug options.” The seizure wasn’t necessarily dangerous, but it was the third one since Leah’s surgery. Regardless of the risks, they needed to get the psilocin out of her system to reduce the more serious risk the seizures posed. They had no way to know if it was the hallucinogen and or the concussion, but either way, her nervous system ultimately needed less input.

One of the nurses hurried in. “What do you need?” she said, highly focused as she watched their patient seize. Sylvia held up a finger.

The challenge was that the standard seizure treatments were both stimulants and neither was ideal for Leah’s ‘high’. Ideally, they’d use a depressant. However, tricordrazine was also good for reversing hallucinogens and the alternative Sylvia had mentioned earlier wouldn’t work fast enough. Unfortunately it was also a stimulant. It was a balancing act: they could treat the seizure and the psilocin but not actively at the same time. Sylvia blew out a breath and grabbed a padd, calculating dosages of both drugs that factored in Leah’s higher metabolism.

She moved back over where Leah was still seizing. “Time?”

“Two plus,” McMahon said, watching the time on the screen.

Sylvia felt more confident that the seizure needed treatment, but they still had time. Not a lot, but some. “Okay, we need 10 ccs of impedrizine, now. Then we’ll follow up shortly after with 1.5 cc of tricordrazine.”

The nurse moved over to the secure med storage and used her access, prepped the hypos and handed the first to Hunter.

“What about her heart given everything?” Sol said.

Hunter nodded. “I know,” she said, injecting the impedrizine into Leah. It would kill the effects of the psilocin immediately. She counted to ten. “Time?”

“Coming on three minutes.”

Sylvia blew out a breath. She held out her hand and the nurse set the hypo with the tricordrazine. Hunter checked the dosage (this one was particularly potent) and then administered the drug. Within a few seconds, Leah stopped shaking and they sighed a collective breath as her vitals stabilized.

“We’ll keep a really close eye on her cardiac function and I suspect she’ll wake up anytime now,” Sylvia said, though she was in no hurry to rush the woman to consciousness. “Kham, we’re good for the moment. You can go back to waiting at the door for security.”

Kham rested a hand on Hart’s head for a moment and focused on their new friend. ” You be good, you hear?” she said softly, before moving back into the hall so security would know where to find them.

Sylvia took up a spot on the other side of Leah and finished the last bit of the exam. So far, nothing concerning as far as unnoted injuries but there was one detail that may or may not be important for Leah herself later. There were just too many variable here that made unravelling this situation clearly so much more difficult.

~Leah Hart, NP

It was in the midst of all that chaos that Lt Tracy Morgan had arrived. She’d only been told there was an issue and a crew member was unconscious in the hospital. That was all Tracy needed to be on the war path. She recognized most everyone, she made a point of it. She’d been with the Sentinel since she had been recommissioned. When Kham came to the door she was standing, back to the door, watching the corridor. She glanced over, “What do you need?” she asked kindly.

Morgan

Relief swept over Leah’s face and then braced herself with a steadying breath. “Lieutenant Hart has had an accident and ended up in the hospital with a head injury that required surgery. The accident occurred while on a hallucinogenic drug. As best we can, the hospital staff assumed that it was some fun gone bad, but the amount still in her system suggests it was a really high dose, which would have been potentially dangerous given her metabolism and we question whether Leah would have done that intentionally. Dr. Kreed doesn’t want to assume so and thus need someone to investigate. The local constabulary were not notified when she came in as an unknown patient, but I think someone might know now and I assume someone would come by anytime now.” Not that Kham was certain about that either.

~Leah & Co.

In all the things Morgan had seen Hart do since she came aboard, over indulging in recreational drugs was not one of them. “If that is the case, and Lt. Kreed is not one to exaggerate, then we need to leave someone here. I will contact Lt. Anders to send an investigative team down, and I will stay to guard her. I will need written statements from all of you. The last time you saw her, who she was with, what she was doing, when you noticed her missing, as well as your Medical evaluations. I know you all are caring for her, but if you could start on those while the memories are still fresh.”

[O] Morgan to Anders. We need an investigative team here at the hospital on Risa. Lt. Hart was assaulted.[C]

“Potentially, Lieutenant… potentially.” the Saurian doctor said from the doorway. “We are simply not dismissing the possibility.” He walked up to the bed and looked at Hart. The horizontal lids blinked, followed by the vertical. Shifting his vision through the light spectrum, he saw the heat coming off of her as she cooled down from the previous episode, and saw the cold mark of the hypo. He turned his head and looked at Kham. “Another seizure?” he asked flatly.

Kreed, CMO

”=^= On my way Captain,” Marcus replied. Mere minutes later, the Security Chief - along with two of his junior officers, armed with phaser pistols materialised in the centre of the area surrounding the body, “How long since the assault took place?” Marcus asked, all business.

-Lieutenant Junior Grade Marcus Anders: Chief of Security-
