Chandel hugged her mother Kristen tightly as the two stood at the airlock of the Archimedes. The Archimedes was the freighter owned by both her parents though just her mother now since her father, Raul had died suddenly.
“Dis is yer time now, cher.” Kristen said in her Cajun accent that Chandel had mostly lost while attending Starfleet. She let go of the hug and held Chandel’s hands. “Yer fader would be so proud of ya and so sad that ya put yer career on ‘old for me and de Archimedes. But dis yer time now. I don’t want you to worry about me or ‘er. Promise me!” Her mother demanded.
“I promise, Maman. I will.” Chandel said as she hugged her mother again quickly before picking up her satchel, turned and disappeared into the bowels of the station. She had been given quarters here until the Sentinal showed up.

Chandel had enjoyed her layover on the station, it had given her the chance to get used to the feel of Starfleet again after being gone so long.
After receiving notification from comms that the Sentinel was entering the sector, she hurried down to the observational deck so she could watch it dock.
A chill thrilled down her spine as the ship slid into its moorings.
Even though she had grown up aboard ship, she had never lost the thrill from seeing them move while she was outside it.
She wouldn’t be allowed to board right away as the maintenance crew would need to see the mechanics of securing her and then they would board with their equipment and whatever parts were needed to get her ready to head out again. But then she would be able too. Only another couple hours. She headed back to her temporary quarters to pack up and be ready.

What seemed like immediately after the ship docked for some and all too long for others a station wide call went out that all new crew members waiting to board the Sentinel were to report to docking hatch 3.

Waiting by the door was a young Yeoman, by the rank of junior Lt, in an immaculate dress style command yellow uniform. Her knee-high black boots shined in the artificial light. Her red hair was twisted and pinned into an elegant french twist. There was a plaid sash pinned to her left shoulder and tucked into her belt along her back. A large bulky PaDD hung from a strap across her shoulders, a communicator was clipped to her belt and there was a stack of the bulky PaDDs on a small table next to her. She was checking in all the new crew members.

Packed bag hanging on her shoulder and her own bulky data pad under her arm, Chandel hurried up to the quite put together Yeoman. She didn’t feel that she looked half as good in her own Science blue shirt skirt uniform. She knew her hair looked fabulous though, it was done in piled up braids that coiled around her head, and looked like a rather tall crown. The black was so shiny, it gleamed. Her ebony skin was a bit wan due to the lack of real sunshine.
“Greetings, Yeoman. I am Ensign Chandel, Science Officer. A new transfer for the Sentinel.”

The woman looked up with a welcoming smile. “Welcome aboard, ensign.” She held out a data disk, “You’ll find a map of the ship, your initial duty roster, as well as your schedule time with Commander Alden, our Chief Science officer, and your appointment with Lt. Hart, our counseling officer. There is a schedule with social activities, and the menu offered in the galley for the month. Chef Gorshin is excellent and very attentive. If you have any requests or dietary restrictions, there is a form on the disk for you to fill out and send to him.”

“Your quarters are on deck 8, aft starboard, berth 809. The docking hatch is on deck 9. There are five turbolifts around the central core of the ship that span the height of Sentinel. All crew recreation can be found on deck 9 with the exception of the gym that is on deck 8.” She reached into a bin beside her for a communicator and made a note on her PaDD. “This communicator is yours for the duration of your service on board. If you have any personal weapons, please check them now with the security officer,” she nodded to a Lt standing on the other side of the hatch. “It will be logged and returned after it has been cleared.”
