Sentinel was always a busy ship. There were always things to be done, places to go, cargo to move. Today, they were out on the far edge of their general patrol area, investigating reports of spacial anomalies in the region. Roman, to his great dismay, was not yet back on full duty, in fact, he’d barely returned to duty at all. So, he was having his science officer on the Bridge send him the reports.

As the ship sat near the most recent anomalous location, running sensors and scans and what have you, an all-encompassing white light breached the walls of the ship, enveloping all of them.

In what looked like an Earth high school gymnasium, Captain Rende, Lieutenants Kreed and Anders, the chief Engineer Karl, and Ensign Alyssa awoke. The basketball hoops were down as if a game was to be played, the bleachers pulled out. However, the scoreboard was blank, and no one besides the officers was present. There were no windows, just the things typically present in a room such as this.

All of the officers were physically fine, unhurt, exactly as they had been on board the ship. Their only symptom was disorientation as a result of the method of transportation, which would fade in ten to thirty minutes.

There was a voice in their minds, as if telepathic, not even quite a voice, just… the ideas. I would like to play a game with you, my intrepid explorers. I have abducted you from your ship - don’t worry, it is safe, as is the remainder of your crew. You, however, must win at my game in order to escape. Do not hope for rescue. You are unreachable to your crew. You will not be able to reach them and they will not be able to find you.

The only way out is to play. And the way to play… is to escape. You are in a building modelled after those on the planet of Earth. By any means necessary and available to you, you must escape to the outside. Only then will you be returned to your vessel. Good luck.

Kreed blinked the vertical and then the horizontal lids of his large, black eyes. He sat up and looked around. He had been in Sickbay, and now he was not. This is not normal. he thought to himself and looked around at his shipmates. “Did the rest of you hear that?” he asked flatly.

Kreed, CMO

Rende had been in the gym practicing martial arts with one of the security officers. She was out of uniform in workout clothes, sweaty, and barefoot. She rolled to sitting and scowled. Omnitient voice, with a personality to play games, and make others do as they said. It reeked of the Continuum. Not that Star Fleet currently knew who they were. Of course there were other beings like that out there.

Asam nodded, “I did. Alright, everyone speak up. Are you okay? Other than disorientation?”

Karl had been on his back under a console, hands fidgeting with some wires. When he woke up his hand was across his face, his nose hurt a little as did his wrist, he presumed his hand had fallen on his face, nothing like a light love tap on your own face to start the day.... or well continue it he guessed. He sat up and looked around Captain, Security Chief, Medical Chief, one Junior officer maybe Security He made a mental count of those he saw, an unusual group, half the senior staff and a single ensign. “Hit my face when I lost consciousness, hand fell on it no bruising or serious injuries” He reported, his usual humour replaced with uncharacteristic professionalism, a sign of how serious he took their current situation. “Didn’t feel like a voice, more like a collection of ideas I translated into words, telepathy?” He asked unsure, he’d never actually experienced telepathy before.

Marcus’ head throbbed, “I’m not sure what it was, but my head feels like I’ve gone 10 rounds with an Orion Slavemaster.”

-Lieutenant Junior Grade Marcus Anders: Chief of Security-

Kreed pulled his tricorder from his white coat and looked at Anders. “Here. Let me take a look. Hold still.” he instructed and began to run a scan.

Kreed, CMO

She then had also woken up not knowing what hit her. “What happened? I feel like I just had 20 major balls hit me in the head.” Not knowing what was going on.

“Just stay still, Williams. Lt. Kreed will check you in just a moment,” the Captain said. She stood and looked around. “Karl let’s start searching under these bleachers. People lost things all the time beneath them. On purpose or accident. Just be careful of traps.” Rende moved to the left side of the court and around the end of the bleachers and peeked underneath, scanning it visually before stepping through the maze of metal supports.

Karl cocked his head at the captain’s orders but didn’t hesitate to do as asked, he got up slowly and moved to the bleachers and started looking around “I wonder if there’s a specific reasons we were grouped together” He called out.

Their questions were met with silence. The voice seemed uninterested in giving ‘extraneous’ information.

When he finished with Anders, Kreed moved onto Williams. “It’s not unusual for individuals who have not experienced telepathy before to experience some discomfort. Especially if such communication is not the norm for their species.” He finished the scan and looked at her, his large black eyes reflecting her somewhat. “I see no need to be concerned. The discomfort should fade in the next few minutes.” Kreed then began looking around, using his natural ability to see in the infrared spectrum.

Kreed, CMO

Under the bleachers was a wire bin full of basketballs. On the wall was a plaque:

Play a game with these fun balls
Don’t bore with basic games
Delight me with your calls
Impress me with your brains
And perhaps you shall move on

As for Kreed’s vision, there was no one within his sight besides the present crew, the five in this room. Everything else looked standard for a structure like this, power sources seemed to be below them, perhaps a hot water heater, and hot water pipes and such throughout.

Rende sighed and picked up the bin of basketballs. She walked back out from underneath the bleachers and set it down in the center of the basketball court. “Apparently we have to play a game. Something that will amuse and delight our hist. Not anything as mundane as a simple basketball game. Any ideas?”

Cpt. Asam, CO

Kreed thought for a moment and then said “I believe that human children have a game where balls are thrown at one another with the intention of hitting their opponents and causing them to be ‘out’. There is a classic Earth vid based off of the premise, if I remember correctly… something called ‘Dodge Ball’?”

Kreed, CMO

“Dodge Ball. I haven’t played that since the academy.” She said.

Karl cocked his head “Dodge ball?” he said curiously thinking about the word for a moment and thinking of what game it could be “Ah shootball” He said with a snap of his finger then frowned “With basketballs?” He picked one up and tossed it in the air “These’ll hurt like hell”
