She nodded. “Of course. At this point it feels ingrained in me, but I also know that it’s easy to get jaded.” Leah has finished her meal and folded her arms on the table. “What are you most looking forward to lately?”

“Hmmmmm…” What indeed? “Working without a safety net. Getting a feel for myself as a Captain and not as the first officer.” She sighed a flicker of something across her eyes, “and as a newly single woman.”

“You too huh?” Leah said before she fully realized her words. But then she just mentally shrugged it off and carried on as if it was intentional. “Being single again is… weird at times. How long were you with your partner?”

Well Rende couldn’t really tell Leah how long they had been married. “Were were married when we turned 18. We went through everything together.”

“Wow, young,” Leah said. “It definitely changes how you approach things, especially when you ride the ups and downs with someone at your side.” This wasn’t a counselling session and she wasn’t here to poke and prod, but still, she wanted to be friendly with the captain in the very least (and Leah thought they were doing a great job of that so far). “You don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to, but I’m happy to listen if you want to talk about how you became single.” She culd guess, since there were only so many ways it could happen, but it was for Rende to talk about or brush over.

“Eldorin is a good man. He will always be special to me. We just grew apart. Too many light years between us too often.” That wasn’t really the exact reason, but there were things that she couldn’t share without telling too much. It was a reason Leah could understand. El being a good man and always being special was the truth with no reservations.
