OOC: I know that this wait has been frustrating. I will do my best to get this sim back on track, although that might mean that I’m putting up a lot of posts in short order here. I am truly sorry that I let this go on for so long, but I do want to keep going as GM now that I’ve worked with the Kelpie to figure out how to continue the plot.

While the senior staff was being briefed about the situation onboard, an unauthorized access alert started. The computer access point in the lower stellar cartography lab would indicate that someone without the proper codes had managed to breach computer security protocols to access sensitive information in the ship database.

Due to the nature and location of the breach, alerts activated at one of each of the Engineering and Science consoles on the Bridge, the Chief Science Officer’s main console, and the Chief of Security Officer’s Office. However, only senior staff were able to access more information than that an unauthorized data breach had occurred.

A breach? In his lab? Uh-uh. That made Alden very unhappy. He opened the alert and began looking to access further information. He was looking for what exactly had been breached, what information or thing they were looking for.

Whoever had accessed the Stellar Cartography computer had been accessing seemingly innocuous information; it was only when whoever was using the computed tried to make an unauthorized connection to the Starbase that the computer systems triggered an alert. Additionally, whoever had been accessing the Sentinel’s systems seemed to know enough about Starfleet computers to manually override multiple security protocols. The ability to erase logs - albeit imperfectly, given what the alert still contained - showed someone trained in Starfleet (or at least Federation) technology.

Marcus sat at his desk as the alert came through his desk, “By eck!” he said aloud and shot up to the nearest com unit, “Anders to Alden, we have a Security Breach, I need to see you in my office as soon as possible!”

Karl hit the nearest Comm Panel [O]Johansson to Anders and Alden, you two seeing this breach on deck 11?[O] He asked, his usual cheeriness replaced with cool professionalism.

Karl exited the lift and nearly bumped into the young security chief “The meeting canceled?” He asked getting back into the lift

“Come with me, one of the crew was attacked on Deck 12,” Marcus explained, “Might have something to do with our leak.” He grabbed the turbolift control handle and ordered the lift to Deck 12.

Once Anders got to Deck 12, he was greeted with a couple of Science NEs arguing with a Security NE about the fact that the Stellar Cartography lab was on lockdown. It was somewhat of a tense discussion. However, there was one Science NE who was just standing, looking worried. His eyes were looking back and forth, and he seemed to be mumbling to himself. When the Security NE saw the Anders, he gave a quick salute, then waved him over.

“Chief, if you could explain to these two why they can’t access a lab that was supposed to have already finished its maintenance yesterday, I’d appreciate it. All I was told was to report here to keep the Stellar Cartography Lab Deck 12 access off-limits.”

Meanwhile, the Science NE who seemed to be waiting raised his face when he heard the word, “Chief”. He started walking over to Anders.

Karl raised an eyebrow at the Scientist, this wasn’t his wheelhouse so he simply leaned against the bulkhead and waited for the security chief to do his thing.

As Alden, Anders, and Karlson gathered in the deck 12 corridor their PaDDs beeped indicating an incoming priority message from Admiral Brayden.

The clearance level was O-6 and above for full details.

Alden’s access code would reveal: the starbase was initiating a full medical lockdown in one hour, and that all starships were to stay in dock, and to not allow any personnel to pass between the starbase and any of their ships until the quarantine was concluded. He advised the captains to have their medical teams to do a quick symptoms check, but to be discreet. The disease in question had a low transmission rate, with mild presenting symptoms - but it could prove fatal if it wasn’t treated within the week of infection. However, save for Alden, nobody below Captain’s rank on any of the other ships had authorization to know the full contents of the Admiral’s message.

Anders’ code would tell him: security department clearance for quarantine enforcement,

Karlson’s code would tell him: engineering department clearance to put propulsion systems to idle - which helped provide protocol clarifications even before the question was asked.

Lt. Kreed’s voice came over the ship’s comms. [O] Attention all hands, this is the Chief Medical Officer. At the order of Star Fleet Medical, we are now under a medical quarantine. All personnel are to report to their quarters and remain inside until seen and examined by medical staff. All Department Heads are hereby instructed to keep only essential personnel in their departments and to close access to all non-department personnel until cleared by Medical. All departments acknowledge, please. [C]

Karl instinctively looked up at the sound of the medical chief’s voice and then back at the PaDD “Give me a moment” He walked to the nearest wall panel [O]Chief K to Engineering, send all non-essential staff to quarters, Alpha shift teams one and two are to remain, set all engines and propulsion systems to idle.[C] He closed the channel and then opened a new one to answer the CMO’s call [O]Karlson here, Engineering acknowledges[C]

Right after the Chief Engineer acknowledged the CMO’s message, a response from Engineering came.

[O] Main Engineering here. Orders acknowledged - we’ll get it done, Chief. Main Engineering, out. [C]

Roman frowned. He stepped to the wall and used the comm. [O]Alden to science. Close down all experiments and go to essential personnel only. Comply with all medical orders. Biology, consider one person essential to ensure care of the animals is taken.[C] Then, the same as Karl, a second comm line to the CMO, [O]Science and Alden acknowledged.[C]

“The details are need to know, Ensign, for now you are to do as asked and secure the lab.” Roman replied to the NE approaching Lieutenant Anders. His tone indicated he didn’t appreciate the questioning of orders.

The two Science NEs, upon seeing their department head, listened intently, but both had also heard the lockdown orders. One of them looked at Alden and said, “Commander, our apologies. We’ll go to our quarters as ordered.” The two walked away, while the Security NE guarding Stellar Cartography shrugged.

Karl nodded at the first officers words, he didn’t like it when people argued with senior officers especially not the Command staff. But of course they weren’t aware of what the situation was like “Shall we go in?” He asked

The Security NE said, “I was told to only allow senior officers in here, so you’re free to enter, as far as I’m concerned. I’m guessing that, since I’m securing this lab, I’m not confined to quarters. Chief Anders, is that correct, or should I head to my billet?”

Karl quirked an eyebrow [O]Ma’am I’ve ordered my teams to start idling procedures, I’m in Stellar Cart with Alden to see to a security malfunction[O] He wasn’t sure how much should be said over an unsecured channel.

It was a tricky situation. But something didn’t seem quite right to her. It shouldn’t be taking this long to power down from idle. Or maybe she was just on edge. [O] Of course Chief. Handle that. I can wait for an update.[C] She hoped Karl understood she was concerned and not micromanaging. She’d spoken with him when she first arrived, and found him to be an outstanding officer and even better engineer.

Roman turned to the NE. “What exactly happened here?”

NE Whistle looked around and said, “Commander, I don’t have enough information to answer that question. I haven’t even come in here until now.”

He looked over at the computer station and saw that the side was opened, and the connection ports were exposed. “Looks like someone hard-connected an external device to the ship’s computer systems, or at least tried to. Beyond that open panel, though…”

Whistle stopped looking around the room; his specialties were astronomy and computer science, not forensics, so he would likely miss details that the Security personnel would notice.

“I was coming to my duty shift at Stellar Cartography - trying to be a few minutes early so I didn’t lose a bet some of us junior officers have about shift punctuality - when someone in a services uniform with a weird-looking satchel - I think it was a satchel, since it was slung on his hip, but I’m not actually sure - bumped into me as I rounded the corner. I saw Ensign Piccolo slumped against a wall in the corridor. She was unconscious, and had a gash in her head. I called Medical, they showed up, then I called Security. From what I saw, Betsy - sorry, Ensign Piccolo - hadn’t been attacked in the hallway, but I couldn’t be sure.”

Whistle looked over to the other senior officers. “I’m not going to tell you how to do your jobs, but I would guess the attack happened in here, and you might be able to tell how whoever did this connected to the computer. I’ve rewired enough Starfleet computer terminals in my day because of crazy Academy professors - er, detail-oriented instruction; sorry for the lack of decorum, Commander - to know that that doesn’t look normal.”

Karl looked up as the first officer ran down the corridor “I’ll finish up here” He called after the first officer, he wanted to finish checking out how the spy got through their system before going blind against a more recent attempt. He took out his diagnostic tool and attached it to the terminal that had been tampered with.

Marcus bolted to stay in step with the XO, ‘On your right Commander,’ he said quickly, tightening the grip on his phaser.
