After returning from speaking with the Admiral and updating Alden, Rende made her way to the bridge. She stepped in as the lift opened and looked around. Her eyes fell on her Andorian comms officer. She walked past him and said quietly, “En ch’Sirhc I’d like to speak to you about a personal comm I need to put through, please.” Then she walked toward the small ready room just off the back of the bridge.

Kovan perked up at his station as the captain passed by, his keen antennae catching the quiet words. Well, this was interesting. To immediately request his assistance after talking with the top brass? Kovan pressed a few switches on his station before standing up and following after the captain into the ready room. Kovan stepped into the room and stood at parade rest, “Ma’am,” He said in acknowledgement and waited for her to reveal the details of this mysterious personal comm.

“Have a seat, Ensign,” Asam waved toward a chair opposite her.

Once he was seated she pressed a button on her desk and there was a noticeable lack of humming machinery. “Privacy is such a precious commodity on a starship. Now, I have it on excellent authority that you are the most skilled comms officer in the sector, and that not even the most notorious Orion interrogators could pry a secret from your lips.”

Kovan tilted his head, registering the lack of sound and recognizing that this was to be a very, very private conversation. He seemed to tense at the mention of Orion interrogators but otherwise kept up a cool and impassive aura. “Aye,” Kovan said. He was second to none as a comms officer. In both sheer number of languages known but also in his ability to decode, encrypt and utilize a vast array of communications styles and techniques.”How may my skills be of use to you, captain?”

“We have a spy on board. Supposedly a Romulan posing as a Vulcan. The likelihood that they will attempt to use ship’s systems to communicate is about 50/50. So I want you to monitor everything that comes in and out, but also look for other signals not connected to the ship. I am restricting access to auxiliary control on Deck 7 to command staff and yourself. It goes without saying this needs to be kept quiet.”

Kovan blinked, the only outward sign of shock that particular bit of news gave him. Of all the ships to be targeted by a spy he’d never have put money on the Sentinel. She was a fine ship but hardly the most important. Maybe geography was the larger point than access to Federation secrets. “We can say that all communications systems are down for in-depth diagnostics unless you want our spy to attempt to access the comms systems?” Like a spider waiting on it’s web for prey to trip the trigger.

“I am not sure what Sentinel has they would want. We aren’t exactly in the thick of things. Simply make it look like it goes through. Others are working on this as well, from different angles.”

Rende handed him a data disk, “If anyone asks, the admiralty told me my husband’s ship is missing, and I’ve tasked you with trying to get a message through. The disk actually contains a message to him, just in case.”

As they talked an official transmission came through from Admiral Brayden. Asam put in her clearance code and read it. “You don’t have authorization to read this, but the comm line is open. Watch and see who else is reading this and anyone who tries to get in that shouldn’t,” she said to Kovan.
