It was hard for Leah to put her finger on exactly what was different about the Sentinel but it was more than just busyness. She was about to comment further when her attention was drawn upwards by someone approaching.
At that moment, the doors to the Officers’ Mess parted and the sleek, if somewhat haggered looking figure of Lieutenant Junior Grade Marcus Anders. Having just completed a round of training with the Sentinel’s Security Team, it was safe to say that the young Englishman was in dire need of a decent refreshment. Seeing Rand with a young officer he didn’t recognise, Marcus grinned and headed over, “Mornin Yeoman, blimey, remind me never to do training this early again,” he turned to Hart, “Ah sorry lass, where are me manners? Marcus Anders, Marc to me friends.”
-Lieutenant Junior Grade Marcus Anders: Chief of Security-
She reached out and offered her hand. “Leah Hart, Nurse Practitioner. It’s nice to me you Marc,” she said. Most people didn’t offer a nickname during a first greeting unless they wanted you to use it. Or at least that had been her general experience.

Rand smiled politely but her eyes danced a bit. “Lt Anders, you always say that, but you keep doing it. I even put a reminder in your schedule about it. I think you enjoy it, but don’t want people to know.”
Yeoman Rand
Marc chuckled. “Now whatever gave you that idea, mind if I join you both.”
-Lieutenant Junior Grade Marcus Anders: Chief of Security-
“Not at all,” Leah said with an easy smile, gesturing to an empty seat. “We’re just pausing for a quick bite as Rand gives me a tour of the ship. I just arrived- first day and all.” She took a bit of her sandwich, reminding herself to actually eat while she had the opportunity, and not just socialize.

“Please do,” the yeoman said politely. Rand slid her chair over making room at the smaller table. She picked up her tea and drank it for something to do. Lt Anders had always been polite to her, and even shared a table with her once back before he became the security chief. She didn’t know him well at all though.

“So, why the Sentinel Doctor Hart?” Marcus asked, sliding into the free seat.
-Lieutenant Junior Grade Marcus Anders: Chief of Security-
Leah give him a smile. “I go where I’m needed, and this is apparently where my skills can be of use.” She looked between Rand and Anders. “Did either of you get to choose to be here, or is this where you were assigned as well? I’m honestly not sure how it works on starships. This is my first time serving aboard one.”
~Leah Hart, NP
“I was assigned here right out of the Academy. I wouldn’t have known who to ask for a specific assignment.” That wasn’t true, but Rand would never do that.
Yeoman Rand
‘Same as the good Yeoman here, straight out of the Academy. Wouldn’t have it any other way mind you!’
-Lieutenant Junior Grade Marcus Anders: Chief of Security-
Leah nodded with a smile. “After finishing my doctorate at the Medical Academy, I’ve spent the last four years at Starfleet Medical. But before Starfleet I was an emergency room nurse back home. Did that for five years.” Hers was not quite the typical path but it had always felt organic, like she was growing into herself. Starfleet has just proven to be the accelerator she had needed at the time.
~Leah Hart, NP
Rand hated discussions about what she did before Star Fleet. She kept her expression neutral and offered a more neutral comment. “My brother did his clinical at a veteran’s hospital working with PTSD patients.”

Leah nodded to Rand with a smile. “That’s very important work. I’m glad for everyone that delves specifically into that area. There’s certainly a need for it.”
“My brother loves his work. I miss him, but I am very proud of him.” Rand provided and then gave her attention to her tea.
“An ER nurse?” Marcus asked with a raised eyebrow, “You must have some stories.”
-Lieutenant Marcus Anders: Chief of Security-
Leah snorted. “Oh God, do I ever! The propensity for people to get themselves into the most awkward and inexplicable situations never fails to fascinate me!” she said with a laugh before it faded and was replaced by a somber expression. “Though, those moments brought levity to what could often be a very… taxing job.”

“I would imagine that the successes make it worth it? Knowing people get to go home?” R
The question was genuine. Rand remembered her nurses that had taken care of her. They had been a never ending source of support and encouragement.
