Rende returned to the station and went directly to Admiral Brayden’s office. She looked at the yeoman there and smiled, “Lt. I need to speak to the admiral immediately. Please let him know it’s concerning our earlier meeting.”

Capt. Asam, Commanding Officer

The yeoman nodded, said, “A moment while I notify the Admiral.”

The lieutenant had recognized Captain Asam, and did not ask for any clarification. After about a minute, the Admiral’s office door slid open.

“Come in, Captain,” Admiral Brayden said. “I am curious as to what news you already have to deliver.”

Rende shook her head, “Nothing so far, but we do need your cooperation to put into action the plan we have.”

“Our medical department only just finished physicals for the entire crew. Requesting everyone to come back in would cause discussion and questions if a specific reason is not given. And our would be spy is not likely to report for his onboarding physical. So what we propose is a medical quarantine. The announcement will require everyone to report back to their prospective ships and then the air locks sealed. Traffic in and out of the station would be halted for a brief time. Once our airlock is sealed the station can return to normal, assuming the spy hasn’t already left Sentinel. We will proceed on the Sentinel with the protocols and medical and security will have time to check everyone, and to search the ship for any stowaways. It’s not a fool proof plan, but it will get us closer to locating and identifying him.”

The Admiral nodded as he listened, considering the plan.

“I suppose you will be the first of the captains I notify - we’ve decided to bring the shuttle debris to the starbase manually. This will mandate a full security lockdown of the station - nobody on or off any of the ships, all airlocks shut, all shuttle bays locked down except for the one we use to bring the debris onto the station. Access to all turbolifts will be prohibited, except for the cargo lift, which will be accessible only between the shuttle bay and our analysis laboratory. That will be by my authorization only.”

Admiral Brayden looked over his own terminal.

“I had planned to send a message to the captains of the docked ships instructing them that this would, in fact, be disguised as a medical quarantine of the starbase. I’m certain our Romulan infiltrator is likely not the only spy we have, but I don’t want anyone who isn’t truly Starfleet learning that we’re acquiring a warp capable shuttle craft of unknown origin for analysis. Your idea aligns with my plans perfectly. If you wish to use the circumstances to your advantage, feel free. You have three hours ship time until we will signal lockdown procedures. Do with the time what you will. The other ships will only have sixty minutes - I suggest that you not act on this discussion for another two hours ship time.”

Admiral Brayden paused for a second, then said, “Is there anything further, Captain?”

“No, Admiral.” Asam shook her head. “I just wanted to inform you of our plan. With a spy, I didn’t trust it to comm signals. Thank you for the support and advanced warning. I’ll get out of your hair now.”

Admiral Brayden nodded, although he was somewhat amused to hear such an informal idiom, given the rank disparity.

“Thank you. I appreciate commanding officers with some initiative, but I also appreciate respect for the chain of command,” the Admiral said. “Dismissed, Captain Asam, and - how did Earth naval combat officers used to put it - happy hunting.”

The Admiral went to work with something else, setting a distinct end to the conversation.
