It was hard for Leah to put her finger on exactly what was different about the Sentinel but it was more than just busyness. She was about to comment further when her attention was drawn upwards by someone approaching.

At that moment, the doors to the Officers’ Mess parted and the sleek, if somewhat haggered looking figure of Lieutenant Junior Grade Marcus Anders. Having just completed a round of training with the Sentinel’s Security Team, it was safe to say that the young Englishman was in dire need of a decent refreshment. Seeing Rand with a young officer he didn’t recognise, Marcus grinned and headed over, “Mornin Yeoman, blimey, remind me never to do training this early again,” he turned to Hart, “Ah sorry lass, where are me manners? Marcus Anders, Marc to me friends.”

She reached out and offered her hand. “Leah Hart, Nurse Practitioner. It’s nice to me you Marc,” she said. Most people didn’t offer a nickname during a first greeting unless they wanted you to use it. Or at least that had been her general experience.

Rand smiled politely but her eyes danced a bit. “Lt Anders, you always say that, but you keep doing it. I even put a reminder in your schedule about it. I think you enjoy it, but don’t want people to know.”

Marc chuckled. “Now whatever gave you that idea, mind if I join you both.”

“Not at all,” Leah said with an easy smile, gesturing to an empty seat. “We’re just pausing for a quick bite as Rand gives me a tour of the ship. I just arrived- first day and all.” She took a bit of her sandwich, reminding herself to actually eat while she had the opportunity, and not just socialize.
