It had been six weeks since Cadet Kreed had been instrumental in the rescue of the USS Taliskar and the colony of Holvern VII. Well, Cadet no longer. While in a medically induced coma, Kreed had been promoted to Ensign; even before graduating the Academy. He was still in the Academy hospital, but was recovering very well considering the amount of trauma he had suffered: Bilateral spiral fractures of the legs. Multiple second and third degree burns over eighty percent of his body. Compound fracture of upper left arm. Pelvic fracture. Compression fractures of lowest three vertebrae. Convoluted skull fracture. Multiple broken ribs. Bruised liver and kidneys. Rupture of stomach. Punctured left lung. Blunt-force trauma to lower abdomen and chest. Concussion. Major blood loss. He had been in a medically induced coma for three weeks, only awake for the last three. He had begun his physical rehabilitation, and was doing well- save for the constant interruptions from the brass wanting to meet him, talk to him, and ready him for his return to duty. Kreed took it all in stride, but the lack of emotional response to his ordeal was concerning some of his doctors.

So now Kreed lay in his bed after rehab, waiting for a therapist to come see him. He didn’t feel it was quite necessary; after all, he was receiving a glowing prognosis as to his recovery and he would soon be able to walk unfettered by a cane and would be back at work within the next few months. Why was everyone so worried that he wasn’t worried?

Kreed, almost a doctor

A knock on the edge of his doorframe preceded the entrance of a Human woman in a white nurse’s uniform. She was quite short, and had a more muscular physique than someone of her stature might. Her chocolate brown hair was back in a neat braid and her deep brown eyes took in the Saurian for a moment before she smiled. “Cadet Kreed? How are you feeling? Is now a good time to talk?”

The Saurian’s black eyes looked to her and he nodded slowly. “Yes, I am he. But it is Ensign now. They promoted me while I was unconscious.” The words sounded very strange to say, but it was fact. “And yes, we can speak. I am done for the day. Who are you?” he asked plainly, a set of vertical eyelids blinking.

Kreed

“My apologies Ensign,” she said softly as she stepped in further. “My name is Leah Hart. I’m a nurse practitioner with the psychiatry department. I’m often called to do basic assessments for patients who have gone through serious physical trauma. It’s a part of the process of being cleared for duty again. Do you mind if I sit and we have a little chat?”

“Not at all. Please.” and he gestured to a chair by the bedside that had been recently occupied by an Admiral who spent an excessively long time telling Kreed how proud of him she was. Kreed didn’t even know the woman’s name.

Kreed

Leah took a seat and crossed her legs at the knee so she could balance the PADD on her lap and take notes. She took a moment to look up at Kreed’s readings and made some notations. “Don’t mind me, just recording your vitals for reference. They all look great by the way.” She looked up at him. “So, how are your feeling, both physically and emotionally since you’re woke up from the coma?” He seemed pretty matter-of-fact, so she decide to be so as well.
