It had been a long, exhausting, physically draining day. As of 2300 hours ship’s time, the Medical Department checked out at 99.87% up to date. Far above the required accuracy of records and inventory required by Star Fleet, and done in under the three days the Captain had given him to get it up to speed. Kreed, the new Saurian CMO of the Sentinel, sat in his office… the last disorganized and chaotic place in Sickbay.

It wasn’t his doing. The apparent revolving door of Medical Officers that had inhabited the space before him had done little or stayed long enough to put the place in order. But that was a task for another day. Now… now it was time to find the missing piece.

Kreed reviewed the list of candidates for psych nurse he had sent the Captain a few hours ago. All were qualified, educated, and not currently assigned. But they weren’t what he wanted in his staff. They would work, of course- he would see to that personally- but none of them struck him as right. But psychology and psychiatric care were not his specialty by far, so he resigned himself to-

And then it hit him.

He turned to comm terminal and keyed in a code. He didn’t give thought as to rhe hour on the other end of the subspace call. He had an answer to his problem, and it wouldn’t wait.

Kreed, CMO

“Nnngggn… no, no, no.” Leah lifted her head from the pillow hoping the sound stopped. It did not.

Grumbling, she flung off the covers and grabbed a robe to cover her nightgown and moved to the comm unit. “You better not be the Ward or I will scream at you,” she muttered. She had just come off a double shift that had gone on two hours longer than it was supposed to and only clambered into bed at 0130. It was 0405.

Hart secured the tie around her waist and sat down, and pulled her long hair over one shoulder. Tapping a key, the screen shifted and a very familiar face appeared eliciting a wide smile, despite the obvious fatigue etched into her features. [O]Hola! It’s my favourite patient. Couldn’t wait for our call next week that you had to wake me after a double shift?[o] She arched her brows but was still smiling. It was him so she couldn’t be too mad.

~Leah Hart, NP

The Saurian cocked his head to the side. [o] Patient? I am no longer in your care. I - ah yes. Never mind. [o] He paused a moment and then said [o] I apologize for the late call, but you need to submit your application to the USS Sentinel right away. There is a billet open for a Nurse Practitioner with strong Psychological and Psychiatric training. A billet I requested the Captain approve just today. You would be the ideal fit, and there are people here who could use your help. As you are very aware: therapy and psychology are not tools I am skilled at. I need someone here who is. I picked a few candidates earlier and sent them to the Captain. It just now occurred to me that you are by far the best fit. You should apply for the opening… right now. [o]

Kreed, CMO

Brows arching, Hart gazed at him for several long moments as if trying to decide if he was joking or not. But of course he was’, that wasn’t Kreed’s way. [O]Tell me more…[o] Leah said. She understood his urgency (perhaps), but she wasn’t just going to drop everything just because she told her she should.

~Leah Hart, NP

[o] As I said, there is a need. [o] Kreed said. [o] Enough that the Captain didn’t even flinch at the idea of a dedicated mental health specialist. Additionally, this medical staff has been dealing with a significant lack of leadership in the department. Three Chief Medical Officers in less than two years. I am number four, I believe. I, however, do not intend to continue that trend. I expect to create something… noteworthy. [o] and he looked at her, waiting for a response.

Kreed, CMO

Leah nodded. [O]And as a NP, you know I have a bit more autonomy than other nursing staff. I expect to maintain that, but I am absolutely a part of the team. I want to be helping where I’m needed. You know I’m good at what I do, but I haven’t served on a starship before. Do you think that will be a problem?[o] she asked, worry creeping into her eyes.

~Leah Hart, NP

[o] I am aware of your expertise. That is why I contacted you. You will maintain your current level of autonomy, but on a starship the Chief Medical Officer does have final say. That being said, I trust your abilities and see no need to oversee all you do. Especially in the arena of therapy. And no, I see no difficulty in your lack of experience on a ship. You are, after all, an officer in Star Fleet. Everyone has to have first ship. [o] and he paused for a moment, his head tilting to the side as his black eyes glistened and then vertical eyelids blinked followed by horizontal ones.

Leah nodded.

[o] Although I do expect your first ship assignment to go better than mine. [o]

Kreed, CMO

She snorted. Whether he meant to make a joke or not, it was funny in one of gallows humour sort of ways. [O]If it doesn’t, do I get to blame you?[o] Leah said, her brown eyes glinting.

[o] Of course. I am the one responsible for you. [o] Kreed replied.

She drew in a breath. [O]I do love my work, but I will say that Starfleet Medical is so large, and the Wards are large too. A starship, any starship, would feel more… like a community, I think? It sounds kind of nice right now. I’ll put in an application… after I get a few more hours of sleep. I wouldn’t want my new Commanding Officer to think I’m incompetent because I can’t even do something as simple as that.[o]

~Leah Hart, NP

Kreed looked away and tapped something. A moment later, there was a beep as her terminal.indicated it had recieved a file. [o] I took the liberty. Review, sign, submit. Send to Yeoman Rand on the Sentinel. Ensure you state you are applying at my request. I will make sure your application is the one selected, so you should start packing when you wake up. Sleep well. [c] and the comms went dark.

Kreed, CMO

She blinked. And the broke into laughter. Ahhh, well, this was going to be fun, wasn’t it? Leah focused her eyes on the file that had appeared, looked it over quickly, and added her digital signature and made sure the recipient was the expected Yeoman. Squinting one eye, she hit Submit. Whoosh! It was done.

“¡Dios mío!” she muttered as she got up from the desk and all but collapsed into bed.

Several hours later when she woke up, Lena Hart didn’t even bother checking her messages. She just started packing. When it came to medicine, Kreed always meant business.

~Leah Hart, NP

When Hart got around to checking her messages, she found that she had been accepted for the position in the Sentinel. Orders were included for immediate transfer as well as travel. She would be hopping 6 different ships, but would make it out to the patrol area for the Sentinel in less than 2 weeks.
