It had been almost three hours since the Executive Officer had left sickbay. In that time, Kreed had seen a dozen more crew for physicals, signed off on three medical transfers… and compiled a report of particular significance. He read it again, for probably the twentieth time, and then pressed the comms.[O] Sickbay to Captain Asam. Please come to my office as soon as possible. Thank you. [C] and he sat back and waited, passing the time by re-reading the report he had compiled.
Kreed, CMO
Rende had been in the middle of composing a letter to El when the comms opened. It had been an early day for her, and she’d been trying t enjoy it. Kreed didn’t strike her as the type to request her presence unless necessary, so she stopped what she was doing. [o]On my way Lt.[c]
Five and a half short minutes later she entered sickbay and nodded to one of the nurses and moved toward the back to Kreed’s office and rapped her knuckles smartly on the door frame.
Asam, CO
The door was open and Kreed looked up. “Come in, Captain. Thank you for coming so quickly.” He tapped a button and the door slid closed. “First, an update. Ninety-nine percent of the crew has up to date physicals and their records are current. That is nine percent higher than Fleet average and four percent higher than required bu regulations. We have a full inventory done and the subsequent requisitions have been aent so we will be fully stocked before we leave the station.” He took a breath.
“And then there is this.” and he held up the file. He took the report and slid it across the desk. “For your eyes only, Captain. Medical confidentiality. But as the Commanding Officer, I believe you should be aware.”
The report detailed the CMO’s troubles with the XO, his difficulties getting him to comply with the mandatory physical, and the subsequent findings. It also detailed the need for regular psychotherapy and the fact that he needed a pace maker, but had not had the procedure done. It outlined the proposed treatment plan and the CMO’s hesitation to believe that the XO would comply willingly. Kreed anticipated much administrative and malicious compliance to regulations to keep the XO from following what Kreed wrote as ‘A last line of approach short of confinement to Star Fleet Medical Command hospital and involuntary treatment’.

Rende’s brows went up, and up again, and into her hair line. She knew Alden to be a stickler for protocol and manic about safety regulations. Even the most minor injury in the lab was sent directly to medical and he was enthusiastic about making sure the crew adhered to every regulation.
However, after his complaints when she told him of her orders to the new CMO, she wasn’t completely shocked. “Well, this can’t stand.” She wouldn’t comment on the medical aspects, but the failure to follow orders did not seem to fit her XO. Something was obviously wrong. “Do you have the necessary facilities and equipment and personnel to provide care?”
Asam, CO
Kreed thought for a moment and then said “We have the infrastructure, but we do not have a dedicated psychological staff member. And that is something we should have… regardless of just the Commander. With your permission, I would like put a posting for a Nurse Practitioner who specializes in psychology and psychotherapy. I think it will be of great use to is in the near future.”
Kreed, CMO
Rende nodded, “Do it. We had one, but he was offered a new position with a chance for more advancement. Obviously your predecessor never replaced him. I do remember signing the request.” She looked about the messy office, “there might be personnel files around here. I can ask Rand to look as well.”
“How long have you given him to comply?”
Asam, CO
“He has seventy-two standard hours to attend and complete a psychological assessment via subspace. He and I will meet and discuss the findings, and create a preliminary path forward. Once the therapist is on board, they will create a definitive plan; but I would assume a twice weekly session will be required for some time, followed by weekly sessions.” Kreed said.
Kreed, CMO
Rende was torn. “I don’t want to step on your toes, Doctor. Do you wish me to simply be aware of the situation, or do you want me to add my order to yours?”
Asam, CO
Kreed shook his head. “I wanted you to be aware, Captain. At this juncture, I believe that the less people that are aware of the XO’s… difficulties… the better it will be for him. But if he remains resistant to help…” He slid another file forward.
It was a medical order removing Alden from the Sentinel and remanding him to the medical custody of Star Fleet Medical Command. Such a step would end his tenure as an Executive Officer… and his career in Star Fleet.
Kreed, CMO
Rende looked at the second order and sighed. “It would be a shame to lose such an officer over something like this. He needs help. I have seen this happen to officers, and then they are lost after discharge with no help.” Alden was young and smart and capable. He had a promising career ahead of him. It would be a shame. “He is aware of the consequences of not meeting the deadline?”
Asam, CO
Kreed nodded. “He is. But I will not use this as leverage anymore. Too often with the threat of its use, and it will lose its potency.” He took the order back and put it on the desk. “The next time it comes out is to either destroy it… or submit it.”
