Rende stared at herself in the mirror. The gold dress uniform and her citations and medals. She sighed heavily. “How did we get here, Eldorin? You there and me here? In gold no less. When did I stop being a rebel?” The gold looked strange to her. Rende had commanded many times many people in her years, but this was different. She touched the malka double hexagon on her right ear. She remembered their wedding, how she loved that man. How she missed him now. What had gone wrong, after all this time together? Or was it they were just so long lived that it was natural? It didn’t matter, she missed him. They had promised to go through all their years together, side-by-side. Now there was more than light years between them. A letter blinked on her console, half started, trying to find the words. She looked back at her reflection, “You’d laugh at me, El. With all these shinny bits and bobs on my uniform. A yeoman to make sure they are all pinned and polished, just so. I would tell you I would rather be outnumbered by Zryllian fire mongers than do this.” She pulled at the neck of the shirt and arched her neck back and forth. “You would tell me I’m brave enough to face anything and to get going and shove me out the door.” She sighed, “I miss you, El.”Rende straightened her shoulders, tugged the shirt down, brushed non-existent lint off her pants, and then executed a perfect about face and left her quarters. She made her way to the shuttle bay, where her Yeoman, had indeed been very busy. The Federation Flag was on display, the Sentinel banner, a good majority of the crew was already filing into ranks, and a podium stood at the front of the area.

Karl had never minded events such as this before as he’d always been able to avoid them due to the fact that he wasn’t a commissioned officer. Nowadays he was a department head which meant that he had no choice but to attend these things. Senior Staff meetings, engineering meetings, report reviews, supply overview. So many things that didn’t directly involve working with tools and engines. And all manner of people calling him sir, he had to get out of the habit of saying that he wasn’t a sir, that he in fact worked for a living. He’d gotten more use out of his dress uniform in the past few months than he had in nearly twenty years. He’d only just arrived when he turned to see the Captain in her dress uniform. She looked of an age with him although according to rumor she was old. He knew perfectly well how gossip traveled and tales changed details and truth in equal measure, besides age wasn’t the most important factor when it came to a decent ship commander.
The Sentinels Chief Engineer dusted of his pants, there were slight wrinkles around his knees as he’d stopped on the way to fix a cooling unit, he could feel the Hyperspanner he’d tucked into his boot under his pants as he walked over to the Captain “Captain Asam?” His usual smile widened and he put out a hand to shake “Karl Johansson, Chief Engineer.” He introduced himself.

Rende turned as someone spoke to her. Her head turned slightly as she listened. “Aye?” She held out her hand. It was calloused and strong with a quick firm shake. “Pleasure, Chief.” She carried a Northern Irish accent. “Is that an Icelandic accent I hear?”

Karl blinked in mild surprise “Uhm yes” his smile widened and he laughed softly at his own surprise “Not many people can recognize that by ear, Ma’am, I’m impressed” He said with another laugh.

Rende smiled her gaze held far away memories, “My husband and I are from Ireland. We used to take our son on trips to the other island countries. To see how they developed similarly and differently. They are both engineers and were fascinated by the geothermal engineering in Iceland. We visited many times.”
Karl nodded enthusiastically “Yes indeed, one of the earliest examples of nearly green energy, there are still several functioning generators being used. My family has a summerhouse in the westfjords, the water we use for bathing there uses nearby hotsprings. Plumbing as well” He said almost excitedly
“That sounds lovely. My husband and I were always quite impressed with how well the people used the environment innovatively without destroying everything around it. Something to be proud of certainly. My son always enjoyed Nautholsvik Geothermal Beach.” She laughed good naturedly, “Of course what child doesn’t enjoy the idea of getting to swim when it’s supposed to be cold.” Rende and Eldorin had arrived on Earth just after the first geothermal plant had been opened. She didn’t say that though. There were rumors about her age, but it was something that she didn’t freely toss around.
Then she grinned slightly, “Which is why I can guess that you probably have a spanner or stembolt or something tucked under your belt.”

Karl laughed heartily at that “Hyperspanner in my left boot” He raised his left leg and shook it for effect “Habits of non-commissioned life, my room was always filled to the brim with various tools and some such, drove my ex-wife insane” He said with a gleeful laugh.
Master Chief Karl - CE
Rende laughed heartily. “You know it used to drive me insane, tripping and dancing over all the tools and parts and eating around dissected things. Now though, I miss it. I almost tripped in my quarters because there was nothing to trip on.”

Karl smiled at that “Well I still have a few unused toolboxes if you need something. to trip on” He said as he fixed his now slightly disheveled dress pants.
Master Chief Karl - CE
Rende laughed, “I may have to take you up on the Chief.” She resisted the urge to yank at her collar again. “Where else have you served?”
Asam, CO
Karl chuckled at her response “Most of my service was on the Celeborn under Captain Islas, just around a decade before transferring to Earth” He rubbed his neck “Last ditch effort to save a failing marriage” He smiled fondly when one would expect a sad smile “After that I was transferred to the USS Thyme. Spent about four years there, mostly border engagements against Klingons, piracy suppression. Those Cardenas class ships can really take a punch I can tell you.”
Master Chief - Karl - CE
Rende nodded. Eldorin had worked on that ship design. He had talked hours about it. “That is what I have heard. A good ship to have in those situations. How do you think this nre Independence class compares?”
Asam, CO
KArl snorted, a short laugh in surprise “Tomato vs potato Captain, although having the additional two nacelles to work with was great fun and it’s no small ship but I’ve come to prefer the Cochrane type V engine, plus the Thyme was already old when I got there, she’d already developed her personality. The Sentinel was still just a baby when I got here, it’ll be a while before she grows up fully.”
Master Chief Karl - CE
Rende chuckled, “The type V has really made a difference in the ship’s. Not just in speed but efficiency and power distribution. You’ll get to have some say so in how her personality develops as well. Being here as you make those adjustments, improvements and modifications that are always a necessary progression.”

Karl wished he was closer to a bulkhead, he felt a need to stroke the ship. A habit when speaking about any vessel he was in, he half raised his hand but quickly lowered it “Right about that Ma’am, I’ve already picked up more than a few quirks of hers, places that need special attention and places best left alone. It’s interesting how each class has similar yet different quirks, same areas that require more maintenance but always a different point”
Master Chief Karl - CE
Rende chuckled, “I like to think that a ship takes in quirks of its designers and chief engineers and carries those with them their whole lives, even after being decommissioned. It tells a legacy of soul of a ship. I tend to be a bit fanciful that way.”

Karl nodded “No I agree, a ship is not only its engine, it is also its crew engineering and otherwise. The way the Captain commands the ship all the way down to how the lower deck junior staff scrubs code. But I guess her chief Engineer has more to do with that than most” He again wished he was standing closer to a bulkhead so he could stroke the ship as he was fond of doing when speaking about her “I hope my talk hasn’t delayed you from your official duties ma’am” He said his grin turning a smidge sheepish, an amusing look for a man in his late thirties.
