After a brief overland ride on wheels, the group of four, three colonial militia and Anders arrived in a more mountainous area. Getting out in a small parking spot the group locked up the ground car and looked about stretching after a half an hour ride. Moving over to a ranger post the Ranger Chief unlocked the door and went inside flipping on a power switch to bring the computers and such inside out of sleep mode. “..This here is one of our regional ranger posts for this area. Got another five scattered around..” he said pointing to a small lit up map showing the five posts in yellow and their current one in green, “..Yellow means their unoccupied and in observation mode, when in use they go green like ours..” he explained.

Turning to a console he began typing in some commands. “..Let’s start by getting an update on current things. This will just take a moment..” he said.

“How come so many of the stations are unoccupied, have the animals really gone through that many Rangers? We might need more of my team to cover this operation…”

”..Oh no nothing like that! We only use these ranger posts in active status when there’s an emergency or search/rescue going on. The rest of my teams also do dual roles as park guides and such. You all just got here on the day I and my deputies pulled duty post duty..” he said. “..That said I would not be against assigning one of my deputies to your own men to man said posts currently in observation mode. It would let us string out our search and management patterns on the animals..” he added.

“Any particular preference on who you assign? I have a lad who this mission might just suit, but I’m happy for you to vet him if you prefer?”

Shrugging the Ranger chief turned from his monitor screen, “..Look Fleety as you might have guessed we folks out here on the frontier do not really like having you all around. It is part of the reason for being independent that our ancestors came out all this way decades ago to setup these colonies free of the Federation’s rules and Starfleet’s regulations. Honestly were it not for our growing problems in the last 20 years or so with Orions and such we would not be a member again of your Federation beholden to your rules we would prefer avoiding. But despite all that if it comes to my job here and the colonists safety I will suck it up to get this yearly check in stuff done and over with. Given the problems I got on my plate I will take all the help I can get in that even from you Fleety folks. So if you got someone to help out and you feel they are up to the tasks call them in here then. Unless they do something to have the bottom fallout in failure then let’s get this show on the road..” he said.

“Don’t worry lad,” Marcus said with a grin, “We’ll be out of your hair before you know it,” he flipped his communicator open, “=^=Anders to Ensign Knight, report to the Chief Ranger’s office at your earliest convenience, Anders out. =^=”
