Roman grinned sheepishly and looked at the bland food. He’d already nibbled off a cracker, but nibbling off one saltine hardly qualified as eating. Then they were alone and Roman leaned a little bit into Rand, putting his arm around her. “We’ll make sure you’re drinking enough from now on, avoid this happening again, okay?”

~ Roman

Rand sighed quietly, “Okay.” The infusion unit was uncomfortable. It didn’t really hurt but was in an awkward location because of her burns. And now her arms were wrapped up again. Granted not as heavily as they had been before, and she really didn’t want to scratch at her arms. She lifted the bottle to take another drink. She supposed she should be grateful it wasn’t something more serious. Or maybe it was that bad if Randy had to hook her up to medical equipment. She sighed, frustrated and defeated. She should be able to take care of herself. She was incredibly grateful to have Roman and Randy to take care of her, but she just felt so useless.

Rand

Roman thought they looked pretty sad sitting there together, her with the infusion unit in her arm and her arms bandaged and him laying next to her with his tray of bland foods. At least he didn’t feel so bad anymore. Being careful of her arm with the infusion unit in it, Roman put his arm around her and leaned in, cuddling in against her with a content sigh.

~ Roman

Rand curled into him, finally comfortable as the headache, nausea, and other pains began to subside. She was also suddenly tired, again, but the body needed rest after being on distress. She has to finish the bottle of water though, and then Randy was going to come back to remove the infusion unit. And she had to make sure to drink enough after he did. And she had to remember because she didn’t want to do this again.

Roman sighed as he held her and she finished the water and then put her head back. Roman hugging her was still her favorite place. Maybe she could close her eyes for just a little bit, and be content in the moment. After a long silence her voice sounded with soft Gaelic, “Do you feel better?”

Rand

When Rand curled into him, he put his arms more completely around her, making it more of a hug, but not tight, his arms more resting on her with his head leaned onto her. When Rand spoke, it seemed like Roman was nearly asleep, it took him a moment to answer. At last he nodded and said quietly, “Yeah.” He definitely seemed like he felt better. His heart rate had slowed and returned to normal and he didn’t feel so unsteady and out of it anymore. He was tired because he was comfortable now, rather than fatigued as a symptom of the low blood pressure.

~ Roman

Reassured Rand dozed off for awhile. A couple of hours later Randy returned and rang the chime. He rang it twice. He could use his medical override to let himself in, but didn’t want to do that. He had to remove the infusion unit or he wouldn’t bother them at all.

Randy

Roman reached for the control panel and let the door open without getting up, then replaced his arm around Rand. He hadn’t woken up until the second chime and when Randy came in it was obvious they’d both been dozing. And they were cuddled tightly together, leaning in on each other, looking very comfortable. After a short moment Roman nudged Rand, “Randy’s back.”

~ Roman

Randy held a finger to his lips. Then spoke in no more than a whisper. “Let her sleep. I think I can get it off without waking her up.” Randy walked around the bed and sat down. He opened his med kit and then as gently as he could he removed the unit and placed a small pressure bandage over her arm.

Roman kept out of the way without moving too much so she’d stay asleep.

Rand stirred a little as Randy worked, but once he was done, she fell back asleep. “Instead of taking her down for a session with the dermal reginerator just keep that on for at least an hour.” He ran his tricorder over her before getting up. “Make sure she drinks when she wakes up. And you can eat whatever your stomach can handle.”

Randy got up after packing up his med kit. “Do you need anything?”

Randy

Roman nodded to Randy’s instructions. Then shook his head to the question. Without having to be careful of the infusion unit, he could pull Rand closer to himself, and then he settled in and closed his eyes. Then he whispered to Randy, “Thank you.”

~ Roman

Randy paused at the door, that sassy look on his face. “You wanna thank me, you two stop getting hurt, so I don’t have to walk in on,” he waved his hand at the two of them in a grand flamboyant gesture, “all this all the time.”

“Well, it’s never the plan, is it?” Roman said, still keeping his voice down.

Rand slept through till morning, which was unlike her recently, where she would wake suddenly, several times at night. Like she’d had a nightmare, but could never remember. When Roman got up for the day, she only rolled over, which had the benefit of revealing his communicator that had fallen out of her pocket.

Rand

Roman was just glad she’d slept through the night. When he got up for the day, he slipped out of bed quietly. He picked up his communicator off the bed and set it on the table while he changed and got himself ready for the day, then clipped it to his belt. He left her communicator on the side table, her engagement ring next to it, with a note attached to them. “Miranda - Had to go down to the lab for duty. Call if you need anything. Gorshin said you can go down to the galley and help whenever you like. And remember, drink water. Love you, Roman” the words “drink water” were underlined. He took one last look at her and then headed off down to the lab.

~ Roman

Randy was heading toward him when Roman walked out the door. “I was coming to do your BP check. Figured you’d want to do that before you hit the lab.” He glanced at Roman’s door. “How’s Rand?”

Randy

Roman made a face at the mention of the BP check. Then he sighed. “She’s sleeping. Let’s do it elsewhere, I don’t want to wake her up and worry her.”

~ Roman

Randy waved toward his quarters. “It shouldn’t take long. Ellbirt is really careful and thorough. I’m sure the dosage is correct.” He opened the door and waved to a chair. “I’m off today. I can sit with her, and bring her down for lunch.” Randy was worried about her and didn’t like Rand being alone any more than Roman did.

Randy

Roman followed Randy into Randy’s quarters. He nodded. “Good. I’m worried about her getting confused… I left her ring on the side table where she’d see it.” He told Randy. “But I’ve got to get to the labs as soon as we finish this check.” Randy would probably know that they both worried about the Captain or someone else thinking they couldn’t do their jobs together and forcing them to either split or be transferred.

~ Roman

Randy had Roman go through the same series of movements from the night before. He didn’t see anything that concerned him. “How are you feeling?” It might not be enough to show up on a scan but if he was still a bit light headed Randy wanted to know so Elbbirt could adjust the meds before Roman started his shift. Randy knew he hated taking it, but better that than be off duty for months.

Roman went through the movements. It was a lot easier than the night before. When they were done he, he sat down in a chair in the room. “A bit lightheaded. Not as bad as before.” He answered Randy’s question, apparently in a cooperative mood.

Randy nodded, “It is about time for your dose, so that could be part of it. The other is you blood sugar is lower than normal. With an unsettled stomach you probably didn’t eat much yesterday. I know you’re tired of hearing it but it all works together. So grab something to eat and your usual tea. If after you get your dose you are still light headed, comm me. We’ll take another scan. But your heart rate, blood pressure, respiration and blood oxygen are all great. So it’s probably just left over from yesterday.

Roman nodded again. He’d skipped lunch and dinner yestereday, and his breakfast hadn’t been that large either. Randy was probably right.

“I think helping Gorshin might be good for her. Even if she doesn’t want to go. And, don’t kill me, let her spend time with Scott, not every day mind you. The girl can get on your last nerve, but she’s not going to let Rand just sit there and do nothing. I don’t want Rand to over do it, but…” Randy was conflicted. Their family had made a mistake when Rand had been sick before and the results were disastrous. He didn’t want that to happen again.

Randy

Roman nodded. “Helping Gorshin is definitely good for her. Keeps her doing something, which keeps her happier, somewhere where someone has an eye on her.” To Randy’s second suggestion Roman made a face. “She means well, she wouldn’t let Rand over do it, at least not purposefully. But she really stresses Rand out.” He said.

~ Roman

Randy nodded, “She does. But trying to keep up with the conversation would be good for Rand. Not every day....what if we controlled the environment? I could ask Scott to sit with her, here in my quarters. That wouldn’t invade Rand’s privacy or make her sit in the rec hall, which she hates. It would be only slightly uncomfortable. She’s going to have to learn to deal with that again if she wants to go back to duty.” Randy hated it and his tone said as much. They both also knew there was no way to know when she would be medically ready to go back.

Randy

Roman nodded in agreement. “I think that’s a good idea… I know she’s frustrated with her recovery and she wants to get back.” He sighed, “but I have no idea how to help her do that. At least that sounds like a plan.”
