Roman stood with Rand, keeping his arm around her to support her, glad for the excuse to leave and not talk to Scott anymore. “They’re lab animals. Not wedding props. Rand needs to go upstairs. Get back to work.” Roman said to her, leading Rand out into the hallway. Scott pouted again, but turned toward the lab and headed there. Roman led Rand into the turbolift and let the doors close. “Deck 3.” While they were in there, he leaned on the back wall. “Maybe I can stay with you for a while, get a little rest myself.” Franks could handle the lab for an hour or so.

Rand wasn’t too dizzy when she stood. Gorshin had had her sitting long enough her head wasn’t spinning. She held onto Roman anyway, standing slowly. She leaned against the wall next to him. She would like him to stay with her, but if she was asleep he didn’t need to. Having someone there when she woke up might stop her from getting confused. His statement took almost the whole ride to process, and then she looked up at him. Her concern made her work to translate, “Mmm..m..med..i.cine?” Was he okay? He never said he needed to rest?

Rand

Roman had given a quick wave to Gorshin to let him know they were going. After his comment they rode up in silence, before he felt her move against him, and when he looked down she was looking up at him with concern. He answered just as the turbolift stopped on their deck. “I’m not sure… My chest doesn’t hurt but I’ve been really lightheaded off and on.” He shrugged, “I promise, I wasn’t overdoing anything. I was trying to be careful, so I could rush to you if I needed to.” He was feeling it then, his eyesight slightly tunneled, feeling light and heavy at the same time. It was what made him decide rest might be a good idea. It wouldn’t do anyone any good if he fainted again.

Rand squeezed his hand gently. She tried not to lean on him too much walking back to their quarters. Once inside she went straight to the bed and laid down. There was no pretense of acting like she was fine. Her head was hurting but it wasn’t the worst, but if laying down and some sleep didn’t help she would ask for Randy. Which made her look at him and ask, “Randy?” for himself.

Roman walked with her, his arm still keeping her close to him, into their quarters. He sat down on the bed next to her, frowning in thought. He was worried about it. It had gone on its own before but it kept coming back. He’d prefer Randy over any other medical staff but he still didn’t want to call Randy. “If I rest and it still comes back we’ll call him.” He promised. He was really trying to be better with this.

Rand murmured some sound of agreement. She was already drifting off. She was tired but not necessarily sleepy. Sleep seemed the only way to get rid of the headache though. Grat had given her an anti-inflammatory to help, and it was with the swelling but did little for the pain. Only time and sleep seemed to help that.

Pipkin was scratching at her cage, but Rand was so unsteady on her feet she was afraid to let the little rabbit out. She was afraid she would get dizzy and fall on her when she was alone, though she did like having her out for company. But any consideration was stopped by a chime at the door. Rand looked confused.

When the door opened it was Gorshin with a large tray. He looked at Roman, “You have to take care of yourself too. And there is extra for Rand, so she doesn’t have to get up if she doesn’t feel up to it.” Rand seemed to be asleep and he paused before he left. “She can come back any day she wants if it helps.” Then he left to get back for the rush.

Rand

Roman made sure Pipkin was fed, but kept her in her cage, for the same reason as Rand. She was unsteady enough on her feet, it was better Pipkin stay safe in her cage and get to run around the room another time.. When the chime rang, Roman stood and answered it and was surprised to see Gorshin carrying a large tray. How had he known Roman would be up here? Roman had been planning on taking her up and then going back to the lab before he changed his mind. Still, he was glad for the lunch tray and the offer for her. “Thank you.” Then he lay down next to Rand and put his arms around her, trying to lay still for a while instead of being his usual restless self.

~ Roman

Rand slept heavily for a few hours. The kind of sleep that causes a headache upon waking up. When she opened her eyes, the light in the room made her wince and groan, pulling the blanket over her head, and pressed her face into Roman’s chest to hide from the light. Her neck and shoulders ached and her head pounded. She wanted to go back to sleep where she wouldn’t notice.

Rand

Roman had actually gone back to the lab for a while and then come back up, put the food Gorshin had brought them away so it would still be good later, and then lay down with her again. He hadn’t eaten anything. When Rand woke, Roman was lightly asleep next to her, his arms carefully around her. His breathing was a little shallow, but as she pulled the blankets up he let out a long sigh in his sleep. He woke at the feeling of her pressing her face into him and he tightened his arms around her, pressing her against him tighter. “Feel any better?” He asked, sounding a little groggy.

~ Roman

Rand did not feel better at all. The light hurt, which wasn’t knew but it seemed to hurt worse, her head was pounding all over and felt like it was on fire, and her stomach was a hard nauseated knot. She was both hot and cold and her hands and arms where she had been burned itched horribly. The only reason she wasn’t scratching was moving made her stomach hurt more. She wasn’t sure how long she’d been asleep, but sleep was supposed to make her feel better not worse. The only thing she managed to mumble out was, “Randy.” Other than that she stayed very still trying not to aggravate her head or her stomach.

Rand

Roman reached for the side table and grabbed… He gave a small sigh. He’d given Rand his communicator. Instead he sat up and reached for the wall panel. “Randy to Commander Alden’s quarters please.” He said into it. Then he looked down at her and gently rubbed her shoulder. “He’s on his way, I’m sure.”

~ Roman

It felt like forever to Rand before they heard the chime at the door. It was only a few minutes. Just long enough to take a lift from sickbay.

Randy was all business. Did he wish it was some attempt by his sister to make him and Alden get along and ‘be nice’? Sure he did, but it was too fun bickering with Alden to stop. Also given their current state of health, Randy wasn’t hopeful of finding Rand waiting with that bossy look she got and a 5 course meal on the table. Instead his first look didn’t give him a glance of her except a form in a fetal position hiding under the blankets, and a groggy Roman already in bed for the day. He walked around to the other side of the bed and sat down, starting a scan of Rand first sense she seemed the worst off. “What happened?” he asked Roman quietly.

Randy

“She was helping out the chef this morning… You know, to give her something easy to do where someone could keep an eye on her. When I went to check oh her Gorshin had her sitting down and she said she was dizzy so I took her up here to rest,” Roman explained. “I don’t think her nap made her feel any better because as soon as she woke up she asked for you.” He frowned and sighed, “If it helps she seemed really tired. Gorshin brought us a bunch of food but she went straight to sleep.”

~ Roman

Randy nodded, running the wand over Rand and reading the results. He spoke quietly to her waiting patiently as she answered him. After several minutes, he let out a little relieved sigh. He spoke quietly more out of not wanting to hurt her head. While he explained he walked over to the wall panel and turned the lights down low. “She’s dehydrated. That’s giving her the migraine and the upset stomach. She said her burns are itching, and that’s because her skin is dried out from the burns but also not enough fluid. I’m going to get the get and bandages so she doesn’t scratch them open. The worst is that it’s making the concussion worse.” He opened the med kit and pulled out a hypo. “Her stomach is too cramped to drink and keep it down, so I’m going to give her something for it.” He waited just in case Roman objected. They both knew how Rand felt about being sedated, “This one won’t make her groggy.”

Roman gave a sigh of relief. “At least it’s something easy to fix.” He watched Randy cautiously when he said he wanted to give her something for it, but relaxed when Randy said it wouldn’t make her groggy. “Okay.”

Randy reached under the blanket and gave her the hypo. “It should kick in in a minute or so.” He wasn’t going to wait for Rand to decide, she really wasn’t functioning well enough to decide anyway.

“You’ll remember Grat told you she would need extra fluids to help with the swelling and moving oxygen and blood. She’s not been drinking enough. Probably because she sleeps so much. For her weight she should get 87 oz a day.” He walked over to the counter and grabbed a bottle of water. “Try to get her to start drinking some. I’m going to get an infusion unit and set her up with that, it’s a fast fix for the dehydration. I’ll be back in a few minutes.”

Randy

He nodded, taking the water bottle. “I do remember…” He hadn’t realized she wasn’t drinking enough and he felt bad for it. As if it was his fault she had a migraine. He lifted the edge of the blanket to look in at her. “Sounds like you’re going to feel better faster if you drink a little,” he said to her, loosening the lid of the water for her. He leaned back against the bed’s head board. “Randy turned the lights down. That should help, too.”

~ Roman

Rand didn’t move at first, everything just hurt, but once the anti-nausea kicked in it was easier to move. The core of her body wasn’t stabbing painfully and she didn’t think she’d be sick if she moved. She squinted her eyes open, testing the light and sighed a little with relief when it didn’t make her head throb. With Roman’s help she sat up and leaned against him. She took the water and sipped at it, sure she couldn’t drink it. Instead after the first few sips, she found she was really thirsty, and almost guzzled the bottle down.

Randy returned a few minutes later. He sat down next to her. He couldn’t put the infusion unit on her forearm because of the burns and still healing skin. So instead he was going to put it on the inside of her upper arm. “This is going to pinch, but stay still for me okay.” Rand nodded. Randy worked as quickly as possible, but she squeezed her eyes shut and winced as he got the line started. Once it was in she relaxed though. “I’m setting this up for a 3 hour run. You’ll feel better soon. Keep drinking the water too.” Randy turned to Roman, “And what about you?”
