“Dh’ fhaodadh Franks a bhith air an obair a dhèanamh,” (Franks could’ve done the work.) Roman replied. He didn’t respond to Randy as he left, just focused on Rand. “Ciamar a tha thu?” (How are you doing?) He asked her. He was settled back in now, laying on the edge of his bed on his side, looking at her.

~ Roman

Rand shook her head, “Ach chaill thu e. (But you missed it.)” Rand didn’t notice that the two didn’t really talk. The lights were still low, but her eyes were almost back to normal. Her voice was still slightly slurred but she was calm now. It took her a long time to come up with an answer to his question. “Ceann goirt. Tha e doirbh smaoineachadh. Acrach. (Head hurts. It’s hard to think. Hungry.)”

Rand

“B’ fheàrr leam a bhith an seo còmhla riut,” (I’d rather be here with you.) Roman said to her, shaking his head, “Tha mi fhathast air saor-làithean airson cungaidh-leighis co-dhiù.” (I’m still on medical leave anyway but it translated more directly to “I’m still on vacation for medicine anyway.” More complex ideas were sometimes difficult for him to word properly.) “A bheil thu airson gun iarr mi biadh air Elbbirt?” (Do you want me to ask Elbbirt for food?) he asked her in response to her answer.

~ Roman

She looked confused again. How did he go to the lab if he was on medical leave? She must have misunderstood him. He must have meant because she was in medical. Trying to work that out made her head pound more and she closed her eyes and was still for a bit but she did whisper “Tha (yes),” about the food.

Roman called Elbbirt in and as soon as he came in, Roman asked, “Can she have food?”

“Of course. I’ll have something brought over.” He stuck his head out the door, the sudden bright light flooding in making Rand squint and lift a hand to shield her eyes. Then Elbbirt came back and asked her several questions and checked her over. He found it endearing the way Alden had to translate for her. She was still very confused and was having to really think to remember answers and though she remembered Roman said she had a concussion she could not remember how it happened.

Roman wasn’t as efficient of a translator as Randy, sometimes it took him a minute to translate. But he was getting a lot better with how much he was having to use it since her concussion.

She moved her hand looking for his and the feel of the bandages got her attention. She opened her eyes to look at them and then over at him. “A Ròmanaich, dè thachair dha mo ghàirdeanan agus mo stamag? (Roman, what happened to my arms and my stomach?)”

Rand

Roman looked sad and angry at her question. He reached out and took her hand gently, “Bha thu air do losgadh. Spreadh an coimpiutair agad.” (You were burned. Your computer exploded.) He shook his head and sighed, his free hand clenching into a fist. They needed to catch whoever was responsible, before they hurt Randy or one of them ended up dead.

~ Roman

Her computer exploded? Her brow furrowed again as she tried to remember. She remembered waking up and Roman and Randy talking to her. Something about Morgan. But before that? She couldn’t remember going to her office. She remembered walking in the corridor with Roman. He’d been sick…hurt. His heart was hurt. When did she go to her office? How long has that been. Her vision tunneled as her head began to pound and it felt like a hot knife cutting her brain in two. When did she go to her office? Why did it explode? Her adrenaline spiked, her heart started racing dangerously high, and she was hyperventilating, starting to move about like she might try to get up. But she was too light headed and dizzy to even sit up without help. “Chan eil cuimhne agam (I can’t remember).”

Rand

Roman hugged her loosely, avoiding her burns, to try and calm her down. “Bidh thu. Bidh e ceart gu leòr,” (You will. It’ll be okay.) He said. “Dìreach gabh fois.” (Just relax.) She needed to heal. It would be easier once she wasn’t so confused. He hoped it would be soon that she started to get better. He’d also feel a lot better if they caught who’d done this to them.

~ Roman

Rand leaned into him as he hugged her. It always made her feel better, and this time it did help her relax but she was too confused and scared to feel better. She didn’t understand why she was scared though. He told her to relax and just the saying made her frustrated, people always telling her to relax ever since then. It didn’t bother her so much when Roman said it. He wasn’t placating her just trying to help her. She tried to scoot closer so she could lay against him. The movement made her stomach hurt and her hands sting. And sitting up was exhausting her and making her light headed. She was learning to not rest on the bump on her head, and if she didn’t turn her head too fast she might get a bit dizzy because her eyes didn’t focus but she didn’t get sick from it.

Roman moved closer to her so she didn’t have to, keeping his arms loosely around her. It was relaxing for him too, sitting with her leaned up against him.

Shrine came in with an insulated cup. “Gorshin made her a smoothie - cherry almond. He said she asks for it a lot. I told him her hands were still bandaged so he thought this might be easier for her.” Since Rand was still showing signs of being dizzy she set the cup on a tray near Cmdr Alden in case she needed help. “When she’s done we’ll do another round with the dermal regenerator.”

Rand eyed the cup, she was hungry and she tried to reach over Roman to get it, but paused. Her vision was better, but still fuzzy as she looked toward Shrine and then back at Roman. “Carson (Why)?” asking about the dermal regenerator.

Rand

Roman picked up the cup and held it closer so she didn’t have to reach when she wanted it. “Airson ur n-uillt, gus an slànachadh. Cha dèan e dochann, dìreach tingle,” (For your burns, to heal them. It won’t hurt, just tingle.) He told her. He had more than enough experience with bone fusers and dermal regenerators to know what they were like.

~ Roman

Rand made a little ‘Oh’ face because his explanation made sense. Why couldn’t she figure that out? Why was it so hard to think and make stuff connect? She took the cup and began to drink. Oh! She had a concussion! That’s why she couldn’t remember, but remembering that made her head hurt and she was tired and wanted to lay back down. But the smoothie was really good. She was drinking it too fast because she was really hungry. Rand suddenly stopped and groaned, one arm wrapping around her stomach. Shrine heard it, turned and hurried over, “Oh dear you are too fast. Are you going to be sick?” Rand didn’t answer but the look on her face said yes. Shrine grabbed a hypo to give her something to help. “Have her lay down on her left side. It will help.”

Rand

Roman took the cup from her and set it back on the tray. “Suidh air do làimh chlì,” (Lay on your left) he said, and then when she was ready he helped her move. Then he settled himself next to her but leaving her space and looked down at her to see if she was comfortable.

~ Roman

Rand had been laying more on her right side against him, so it took more movement than she wanted to roll over, but once she did and was still it was better along with whatever Shrine gave her. She was hurting too much to worry about it. Once the medicine started working and her stomach stopped hurting, Rand dozed in and out for awhile. Shrine was in no hurry to move her to her back and upset her stomach again.

About an hour later she stirred. “Am faca tu Nibbles agus Mushu? (Did you see Nibbles and Mushu?)” Rand had the feeling she hadn’t seen the animals in a long time, but she didn’t understand why. Certainly she would have seen Pipkin right? “Pipkin?”

Roman turned, carefully, so he was laying more comfortably with her, his arm a little awkwardly around her shoulder. “Chunnaic thu iad mu dhà latha air ais. Thadhail mi orra na bu thràithe an-diugh fhad ‘s a bha thu nad chadal.” (You saw them about two days ago. I visited them earlier today while you were sleeping.) Maybe a day and a half ago, but Roman was tired and it was getting difficult to speak in a language he wasn’t fluent in. “Tha iad a’ dèanamh gu math.” (They’re doing well.)

Shrine didn’t want to interrupt but she thought it might be better to get started why Rand was distracted talking to Cmdr Alden about whatever it was. Elbbirt came in and they helped get her settled on her back and started unwrapping the bandages for the session. Rand happened to glance down at her hands and went really quiet. Elbbirt was afraid she might panic again from the look on her face. She closed her eyes, she was having a nightmare that had to be it, that’s why nothing made sense. She wanted Roman’s hand but she was almost afraid to move. She began to cry, silently, just the tears, something was really really wrong but she couldn’t figure out what or why or how.

Rand

Roman moved back so he was more on his own bed than hers to give them space. He saw Rand’s expression when she was her hands. He knew the feeling, it was how he felt when he woke up the first time. His hands bandaged and now scarred, his chest injured, his heart damaged. It hadn’t made any sense, and he couldn’t imagine it as confused as Rand. He still couldn’t remember the incident itself, but at least he could understand that it had happened, and why. He squeezed her shoulder. He’d take her hand but he needed to be out of the way for the regenerator.
