“Dh’ fhaodadh Franks a bhith air an obair a dhèanamh,” (Franks could’ve done the work.) Roman replied. He didn’t respond to Randy as he left, just focused on Rand. “Ciamar a tha thu?” (How are you doing?) He asked her. He was settled back in now, laying on the edge of his bed on his side, looking at her.

Rand shook her head, “Ach chaill thu e. (But you missed it.)” Rand didn’t notice that the two didn’t really talk. The lights were still low, but her eyes were almost back to normal. Her voice was still slightly slurred but she was calm now. It took her a long time to come up with an answer to his question. “Ceann goirt. Tha e doirbh smaoineachadh. Acrach. (Head hurts. It’s hard to think. Hungry.)”

Rand

“B’ fheàrr leam a bhith an seo còmhla riut,” (I’d rather be here with you.) Roman said to her, shaking his head, “Tha mi fhathast air saor-làithean airson cungaidh-leighis co-dhiù.” (I’m still on medical leave anyway but it translated more directly to “I’m still on vacation for medicine anyway.” More complex ideas were sometimes difficult for him to word properly.) “A bheil thu airson gun iarr mi biadh air Elbbirt?” (Do you want me to ask Elbbirt for food?) he asked her in response to her answer.

She looked confused again. How did he go to the lab if he was on medical leave? She must have misunderstood him. He must have meant because she was in medical. Trying to work that out made her head pound more and she closed her eyes and was still for a bit but she did whisper “Tha (yes),” about the food.

She moved her hand looking for his and the feel of the bandages got her attention. She opened her eyes to look at them and then over at him. “A Ròmanaich, dè thachair dha mo ghàirdeanan agus mo stamag? (Roman, what happened to my arms and my stomach?)”
